  • This Wednesday: Space Giraffe and Street Trace light up XBLA

As proof that Jeff Minter is no longer tweaking, Space Giraffe is set for release on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, August 22nd, for 400 MS Points ($5). If the term "tunnel shooter" doesn't help you visualize Llamasoft's unhinged experiment in visual excess, picturing a Tempest of rainbows vomiting on your screen should get you halfway there. And that's not even considering the steady stream of mixed up gaming memes it spouts at you -- we just found out our giraffe is in another castle. Also releasing this week is Street Trace: NYC, a futuristic hoverboard racer where your board's "emissions" can grant speed boosts to competing players. Mid-air jostling, upgradeable vehicles and online multiplayer all add up to 800 MS Points ($10) and a stirring memory of the Dreamcast's TrickStyle. %Gallery-6129% %Gallery-6128%

Hot off the wire is that this week is that we're in for another Xbox Live Arcade twofer this Wednesday, with the release of Space Giraffe, as well as Street Trace: NYC. The former of the titles is from Llamasoft, and designer Jeff Minter, featuring 100 levels of gameplay, and completing them unlocks a new game mode (as long as you have a high enough anal score). On the Street Trace side of things, you get get your fill of arena battles and racing across the futuristic wastelands of New York City, Marty McFly style. You have your choice of up to 8 player multiplayer over Live or 4 player splitscreen locally across the four arena stages. Space Giraffe will run you 400 MP and Street Trace clocks in at 800 Microsoft Points, and will be available 9:00 AM GMT or 2:00 AM PT and 5:00 AM ET. Update: Fixed price point for Space Giraffe.

Godfree and the GTR crew posted up their coverage of the Street Trace NYC Community Event in New York City (naturally). They've got a variety of flavors, such as Episode #98 of their weekly podcast, the above video, or the slew of pictures from the event. All in all it was a big success, and apparently had some the best pizza Godfree's ever had the pleasure of eating. We're green with envy, as we're geographically challenged in regards to NYC based events and we love us some pizza. So give it a watch, listen or look, and hopefully you'll enjoy the game itself once it hits Xbox Live Arcade soon.

Street Trace NYC just might be what XBLA multiplayer action lovers have been yearning for. The guys over at Game Stooge wrote up a quick and dirty review of their impressions after receiving some hands on time with the game at a recent New York City event held by developer Gaia Industries. And with the game's numerous game modes, fast and fearless gameplay, and overall hoverboard fun they feel the game will definitely be worth 800 Microsoft points when it releases (whenever that may be). So, if you're intrigued by hoverboard fighting mayhem, be sure to check out Game Stooge's full Street Trace preview after the jump.

Gamertag Radio and The Xbox Domain, along with Gaia Industries, are hosting a special event next month in New York City. On May 5th, starting at 2:00PM ET, the event will give eager players a chance to play Street Trace before it releases on Xbox Live Arcade (sounds familiar). Godfree from GTR informs us that there just might be an extra special surprise there too. It's a secret though. We totally know what it is too, but we're not telling. We can tell you, however, that free pizza and drinks will be available for all who attend. If you live in or near NYC and are available to attend, hit the "read" link for full details.

Over at the new and improved XBLArcade they've posted a few new screenshots of XBLA title Street Trace and some random nuggets of information. The screens look good and there is a bunch of multiplayer and gametype info released, but it isn't too much we haven't seen before. And we still have yet to hear a firm release date for this title, but we're marking our calendars for sometime later this spring. Make the jump if you're hungry for some Street Trace facts and pretty visuals, otherwise go get on your hoverboard and buy us a copy of the Back to the Future trilogy ... but you can totally keep the third one.

If you missed out on the previous Street Trace preview event earlier this month, now you have a second chance. If you live in or near New York City and would like to play Street Trace before it hits the XBLA simply email the fine folks over at ILoveXBLA.com and they'll register you. Those who register will be filled in with the specifics, but we do know the event will be held on Tuesday, February 6th. If you attended the previous event what did you think? Is this arcade game something that has potential?[Thanks, Hexx]

It looks like Xbox 360 Achievements and DaKing240 have partnered with the creators of Street Trace to give fans an exclusive preview of the game before it's released. The event takes place on Monday, January 15 at 6:00 PM EST in the NYC area so you have to live nearby. If you are interested in playing XBLA game Street Trace before it hits the arcade be sure to post on this forum so you are added to the attendee list. Though, they haven't posted where exactly the event is taking place (other than being in NYC), but we're sure more details will come soon. Play some Street Trace, mingle a little, chat about your favorite Xbox 360 blog (that's us), have fun ... it's free!

We just got word that upcoming XBLA title Street Trace will come to the Arcade at only 800 Microsoft Points. Last week, we uncovered all the achievements for the game and were hoping it wouldn't cost over 1000 Points. Well, it looks like our worries have been short lived, because we confirmed that the urban hoverboard racing game will only set you back 800 Microsoft Points. Since the game is going to cost only $10, are you more inclined to purchase it? Of course we'll get to demo it first, but 800 Points makes the game seem oh so more sweet.

Do you remember future XBLA title Street Trace? It was the game that was announced during X06 with fully 3D environments, split screen multiplayer, and hoverboard racing. Well, it looks like Street Trace is getting closer to release as Xbox360Achievements uncovered all the achievements for this upcoming Arcade hit. We're still amazed at how developers can cram fully 3D space, textures, code, and HD goodness into a package less that 50mb. We're also praying that this Arcade title costs less than 1600 Microsoft Points, maybe around 1000ish. Anyone looking into purchasing this game when it releases?[Thanks, DaKing240]

  • X06: XBLA mini-impressions

While demos for major retail games dominated the show floor at X06, there was a small neglected corner devoted to current and upcoming games for Xbox Live Arcade. Some of the more interesting upcoming releases: Assault Heroes -- Yet another overhead shooter with dual-stick controls for movement and shooting. This one sets itself apart with vehicles and... that's about it. Graphics are impressively detailed for a Live Arcade title. Heavy Weapon -- Also a dual-stick shooter, but this one is from the side view. Co-op play has been added since the E3 demo, and the graphics have been polished up quite a bit. Simple, but surprisingly addictive -- all it needs is a jump button to be truly complete. Small Arms -- Described by the demo attendant on hand as "Super Smash Bros., but with weapons," a pretty accurate assessment. Lots of button-mashing in both long range and melee combat. Controls and balance need some touching up, but has the potential to be a great party game. Street Trace NYC -- Very early version of a hoverboard/shooter deathmatch, complete with rail slides and rocket launchers. Targeting was a mess and managing all the different weapons and functions while boarding was difficult. Needs work. No specific releases or prices were available for these titles, but Microsoft said they are all expected by the holidays worldwide. Also see: Lumines Live mini-impressions
