A superhero's work is never done. To fight on the side of good means that you must be as diligent as evil is persistent, else the dark forces will gain sway and demand that you kneel before Zod. Fortunately, a shining beacon has appeared in the sky, signaling good news for the heroes of Champions Online -- a new patch, an upbeat State of the Game report, and a spiffy referral program. The new "Super Powers Patch," as it's being called (or patch FC.11.201000419.5, if you like to be formal) sports a host of additions and changes to the game. For starters, all characters will be granted a free retcon due to the enormous array of powers tweaks. The melee and supernatural powersets, in particular, have been overhauled to bring them more in line with the strength and flexibility of other types of powers. The patch also brings Unity 2 missions, weapons at the tailor, and teaming improvements. You can read the full patch notes here.

Due to the closed beta NDA restrictions for Champions Online, we know very few specifics about the game. Luckily, Cryptic released a fansite kit last week that contains plenty of hidden gems for fans to speculate about and Candor, a board member on the Champions forums, compiled a list of all the goodies. We now have an idea of what some of the abilities from the power lines of fire, ice, electricity, munitions, supernatural, and martial arts might do. We are also given a glimpse of some mission locations around the game world and unreleased comic book panels. This is by no means a comprehensive listing of all skills and abilities, but it does give you an idea of the direction Cryptic is taking with their super powers. The 345MB ZIP file is jam-packed with other goodies, including concept art, wallpapers, and individual heroes and villains in various poses. One could make a stellar fansite based on all this eye-candy, so why don't you give it a shot? A cursory Google search with the criteria of "Champions Online fansite" and "Champions Online blog" doesn't yield many results. Starting up early is truly beneficial to building a strong community.[Via: Candor's forum post]

The first PS3 title from Sly Cooper creator Sucker Punch was shown behind closed doors at E3, which is a shame. inFAMOUS looks great, leveraging its developer's talents in art design, animation, and platforming to create an electrifying open-world action experience. We've already reported on what we saw of this promising 2009 title; now it's your chance to get a five-minute guided tour of the game. There are no edits in this HD vid (courtesy of G4), so you get a feel for what it's like to have a developer walking you through its creation. Of course, this also means there's plenty of running around not doing much, since all the cool bits haven't been condensed into a trailer. The parts of this video that stand out most are the platforming (strong Assassin's Creed vibe there), a moment in combat when the player "restrains" a foe to the ground with electricity, and a very unique use of his powers – acting as a human defibrillator to jump-start the heart of a dying pedestrian. I can barely remember my short time in the Tabula Rasa beta, but I do remember something about aliens giving you super powers, and being a little unhappy about the fact that even though I had a gun and I was shooting at aliens, I wasn't able to headshot them.Anyway, it's now 11pm, and time for another one of our TR launch contests. This hour, we've got a hat and two posters to give away, so to enter, just be 18 and in the US (official rules) and put a comment on this post telling us the feature of Tabula Rasa you're most looking forward to. Aliens giving you super powers might be in there, although no headshots probably won't be. Of course, your answer doesn't actually matter (this is a random contest, and we'll randomly choose three winners from all the comments), but if you want to pretend like it does, we won't be bothered. Go hog wild. This contest shuts off at midnight, so hurry up and get those comments down. And if you miss the deadline, you've got even more chances to play-- our next contest starts when November 3rd, 2007 does (that's in about an hour, in case you don't have a clock handy). And by the way, did we mention that our iPod contest is actually accepting comments for the whole 24 hours of these mini contests? We didn't? Oh. Well there you go.

  • Today's most Hero(es)ic game video: Heavenly Sword on NBC's 'Heroes'

Tonight's episode of Heroes on NBC opens with Micah and Niki/Jessica playing Heavenly Sword on the PlayStation 3. Apparently one of Micah's other tech-based powers is the ability to play unreleased video games. That would actually be a pretty sweet ability to have. Of course, talk about getting no work done as a result. Like us rushing to get this post to you before the show even airs. We read your minds, a la Matt Parkman, and knew you'd want to see this early. Is there also some sort of a hint or clue buried in the game title? Hiro is desperately trying to get his hands on that special samurai sword that he thinks will let him access his powers once again. Of course in the game Heavenly Sword, the title weapon is the game. According to an IGN interview with the developer Ninja Theory, "The story revolves around an ancient sword, the Heavenly Sword, which belonged to a deity and can never be wielded by a mortal without destroying them ... but as the sword is not meant for her, it sucks away her life force. So you begin the game with only a few hours left to live and have to fulfill this one last mission before the sword finally takes your life. But until that day arrives, Nariko's fighting skills rock."Also, Gollum/King Kong/Nikola Tesla's assistant Andy Serkis will be playing villainous King Botan in this game. Is there any sort of connection here? We'd love to see Serkis on heroes. His power would be to make you feel slightly uncormfortable. Very interesting, NBC. Verrrrrrrrry interesting.
