The Swift Windsteed, a.k.a. the floaty goat, one of the most bizarre mounts Blizzard has ever put on the battle.net pet store, is on sale for one week only at a fairly substantial 50% discount. This puts it at $12.50 in the US, and expect a similar discount to follow in the EU, although, interestingly, an EU sale hasn't yet been announced. It's usually the case that the EU announces a sale then the US follows suit, but perhaps the EU team are just biding their time on this one. Do be sure, though, not to buy a US one for an EU account, or, indeed vice versa. The mounts are region-locked, and as such are not transatlantically transferrable. So, if you've ever felt the urge to float through the skies on a half goat half dragon... or fish... that itself runs on a cloud, now's the time to part with your hard-earned cash, as the sale ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on August 13. Will you be buying a Swift Windsteed? Update: The EU now has the same sale.

The Internet exploded with rage when World of Warcraft released a mount for $25 the first time around. But it sold well, and as a result we've seen several new mounts released for the game over the years. So the new Swift Windsteed likely won't raise many eyebrows over its release or its now-familiar price point, which is the same $25 you have probably come to expect. As with previous special mounts, the Swift Windsteed can operate as a flying mount and will scale to match your highest riding speed, making it a purely cosmetic option. The unlock is account-wide once purchased, giving all present and future characters a free mount for all-purpose use in perpetuity. So if you collect mounts or just feel like you could use a qilin to carry you across the skies of Azeroth, you've got reason to be excited.

Back in October, Blizzard teased the Swift Windsteed mount on their Facebook page. Further information on the mount trickled out via datamining patch 5.1 -- and as of this morning, it's available for purchase on the Blizzard Store for $25, though there is only one color available as opposed to the many that were datamined. Swift Windsteed – Exclusive Mount Now Available Take the reins of one of Pandaria's most majestic and rare beasts, the Swift Windsteed, and it is said that good fortune will follow. Dart across the heavens on a silver cloud as fast as your riding skill allows. Once purchased from the Blizzard Store, the mount will be available to all present and future characters for a single Battle.net® account. source

  • Patch 5.1 PTR: Windsteeds get more color, and new audio files

As if one Swift Windsteed wasn't enough, the dataminers have now discovered even more, with the windsteed showing its true colors with three new looks, meaning a total of four windsteeds will be available. Anne Stickney had previously speculated that the windsteed might be a new store mount, that is to say, one purchaseable via battle.net with real money. It seems the appearance of new colors for this mount might indicate that it is available from another source -- there are very few mounts purchaseable for real money which come in different colors but there's always a first time! The source of this new mount could well be reputation with one of the two new factions coming in patch 5.1: the Dominance Offensive and Operation: Shieldwall. The multiple colors of the windsteed are below. Which is your favorite? I think I like the gold one. SPOILER ALERT: There are four new audio files and some description of their contents after the break. If you don't want spoilers, you know what not to do. Don't hit the break.

  • Coming soon: the Swift Windsteed

Blizzard posted a new and intriguing image on their Warcraft Facebook account -- a shot of a new mount with the caption "Across the land or in the sky, the Swift Windsteed can soon be your ride." Where exactly the mount is coming from or how players can obtain it is still a mystery. However, this flying mount is nothing like any we've really seen before. Considering the mention of the little fire kitten earlier this month, this could be a new store mount, or it could be tied to the factions that will be hitting the shores of Pandaria in patch 5.1. Or perhaps this is the next iteration of the Annual Pass? Regardless, the beast certainly looks interesting. Called the Swift Windsteed, it most closely resembles the Longma, or dragon horse, depicted in Chinese mythology. Between the horns, hooves and scales, this seems the most likely inspiration for the unique new steed. Although we don't currently know where we'll be able to get this crazy looking mount, it's nice to see that we'll have even more choices for crazy flying animals to get us around Pandaria. You can check out the full size image on the official Warcraft Facebook account. Mists of Pandaria is here! The level cap has been raised to 90, many players have returned to Azeroth, and pet battles are taking the world by storm.
