Let's face it, the new generation of consoles isn't really here until there's Tetris on them. Tetris Ultimate is the latest-iteration of the iconic block dropper, and it's coming to Xbox One and PS4 this summer, followed by PC in the fall. It features multiplayer for up to four players (Ubisoft's wording indicates that includes online at least) and six self-descriptive modes, namely Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-up Battle.

  • Ubisoft to publish next-gen Tetris

Ubisoft announced plans to publish a new game in the Tetris series for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 today. While no details were given for the new game, the announcement makes mention that it will land on both platforms' digital channels, Xbox Live and PSN. It's hard to imagine what would make for a truly "next-generation" experience in the storied series, which turns 30 this year. Of the more innovative features the block-based puzzler has seen over the years are online competitive multiplayer modes as well as spins on the traditional Tetris formula in the form of puzzles, the "stack rotation" catch mode found in Tetris DS and the three-dimensional take on the puzzler in Tetrisphere for N64. Given what's hot in video games right now, we're hoping the next-gen Tetris game takes place in a procedurally-generated universe with roguelike treasure-collecting elements and emergent storytelling.

If you run to your PS3 now and fire up Tetris, you'll be presented with the option to update. Download that 75MB file and -- just like that! -- you'll be playing in 3D. Oh, also, you have to have a 3D television and be wearing your glasses. We should really have told you about that part first. In other 3D Tetris news, right before E3 the Tetris Company announced plans to localize Hudson's Tetris Axis for 3DS this October, claiming that it "will allow fans to experience the game like never before – in 3D!" Now, by the time that comes out, fans will already have experienced it through the PS3 version, rendering that hyperbolic press release statement inaccurate. To be fair, though, it was already inaccurate, because the Virtual Boy's V-Tetris got there first, in 1995.

  • Tetris finds another platform: your wall

An incarnation of Tetris has managed to find itself on nearly every platform imaginable. So, what's the Tetris Company supposed to do now? It's obvious: break the traditional definition of a platform. In collaboration with Walls360, Tetris is now "available" to play on your wall. Using adhesive cut-out wall graphics, you'll be able to very slowly play a game of Tetris on your wall. As you imagine the pieces falling down the wall, don't forget that the stickers are re-adhesive, so you can "play" more than one game, if you so wish. Given a set starts at $35, you'll definitely want to get as much replay value as possible.

Following a lawsuit launched against The Tetris Company, THQ has acquired the rights to publish Tetris on the Xbox 360 in territories outside of Japan (i.e. North America & Europe). THQ alleged that The Tetris Company breached their contract, preventing the publisher from releasing a version of the classic puzzler for the DS. Instead, Nintendo swooped in and published one of the best installments of Tetris to date.According to THQ's financial filings, a settlement was reached, which included the Xbox 360 publishing rights.
