Few genres can match the gnawing, unquenchable addiction of the puzzler. The classics like Tetris and Puyo Pop have populated virtually every platform under the sun in one form or another, and modern-day classics like Hexic and Zuma have undoubtedly caused more than one dreary office worker to find himself ejected from his cubicle. Sadly, just as many wonderful puzzle games have fallen by the wayside. One of those games is Wario's Woods.Wario's Woods has an odd history for a game: released on the NES and the Super NES only a few months apart in 1994, two similar, though notably different, versions of the game were on the market at the same time. Though the game only differs slightly from Puyo Pop and its various clones, the mechanics unique to Wario's Woods make it one of the most addictive puzzle games ever made. The NES version of Wario's Woods has been available on the Virtual Console for two years, but the superior Super Nintendo version is nowhere to be found. We've seen nothing new from the series for nearly 15 years -- it's well past time for a revival. And for reals, this time. #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } NEXT >> %Gallery-38304% Every week, Born for Wii digs into gaming's sordid past to unearth a new treasure fit for revival on the Nintendo Wii. Update: Wishful thinking be damned -- seems this thing it an early April Fools jokeTrivia time, kiddies. All right, what was the last Nintendo-published game to appear on the NES? Need a hint? It also might be one of the the first Wii Ware game to feature Mario characters. Still need another hint? Um ... look in the headline. Our colleagues at Wii Fanboy got these purported photos of a Wii Ware Wario's Woods from an anonymous Japanese tipster who didn't give many details on their provenance. It's entirely possible they're an elaborate hoax, but if so they show an incredible attention to detail and a talent for capturing the aestethic shown in other Nintendo-published Wii Ware titles. We won't know for sure until an official announcement comes out of The Big N, but for the time being please indulge our wishful thinking in hoping that these screenshots do indeed represent an actual, in-development game. In the meantime ... to the Virtual Console we go! Gallery: Wario's Woods (Wii)

We just received a mysterious email containing these four screens, labeled as images of a new Wii version of the NES/SNES puzzle game Wario's Woods. They could be fake, but it sure looks like a lot of work would have had to been done to do such convincing fakes of a 3D Wii version of the game, with what looks like Wiimote-based attacks, even (like the paintbrush). Is this a new, as-yet-unannounced Wii Ware game? Seems pretty likely to us! But because we haven't seen or heard anything even remotely official about this, we're calling it a rumor. Check our gallery for the screens and see if you can spot some obvious Photoshoppery!Update: Alas and alack! These screenshots turned out to be part of an early April Fools hornswoggle orchestrated by the folks at WiiFolder! We suspected something was amiss when we spotted Kuribo's Shoe in the mix ... Now, if you'll excuse us, we're gonna go back to playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl and try out these "Nudalities" an anonymous tipster clued us into. %Gallery-18920%[Thanks, Chiyoko!]

  • Don't buy these Virtual Console games

Aeropause's Steven Munn has compiled a list of potential Virtual Console games for suckers. These are all games that have superior versions that could show up on the Virtual Console, or, in the case of Street Fighter II, superior versions that already have shown up. Even without taking the arcade versions into consideration, there's still one more SNES Street Fighter II that could come out, so can you ever feel confident about buying one? We take issue with a couple of the items on the list. Munn recommends against buying Super Mario Bros., because buying it later as part of Super Mario All-Stars with Super Mario World will be cheaper. We disagree, only because we think the NES version is the definitive version of that game. Same with Ninja Gaiden Trilogy: should Tecmo ever decide to release the SNES compilation on the VC, it will be cheaper than buying all three NES games. However, those SNES remakes are a mess of barely-upgraded graphics and ruined music. The article does raise a good point, however. Why should we be expected to pay over and over again for inferior versions of the same game, when the best versions exist and can easily be ported? We're thinking of arcade games, here.
