  • The Care and Feeding of Warriors: One warrior's view of the Call to Arms

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host. I doubt it will surprise anyone to discover that I have strong opinions about the new Call to Arms feature for the Dungeon Finder. As a warrior, I play one of the classes that can fill the tanking role, and I have gear that is more than adequate for even the Rise of the Zandalar heroics. As a result, you might expect that I'm out there tanking a load of heroics for instant queues and a chance at free pets and mounts. You'd be wrong. I haven't queued as a tank since patch 4.1. I have not, of my own will, tanked a single heroic since before February. When I have, it's been for friends or guildmates -- and yes, it's been generally successful. Why am I not tempted by the extra rewards of the CTA? Well, there are three reasons.

  • More Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce media than you can shake a Dragon Sword at

If you only play games with Ryu Hayabusa in them, then Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce is likely to be your first experience with Koei's historical-ish brawler franchise. If you only play games with the ancient Chinese ruler Fu Xi in them, however, you're likely to be much better versed in the series. In either case, there's a Strikeforce for you: as reported, Fu Xi (and other characters from the Warriors Orochi series) appear in the Xbox 360 version, and Ryu in the PS3 version, both with exclusive missions that grant you the use of their "signature weapon" when completed. New galleries give you a look at Fu Xi and the extra-beefy crossover ninja. And a new trailer (above) does what it can to get you pumped about Strikeforce, the Dynasty Warriors game with not only characters from other franchises, but giant tigers in it! %Gallery-81768% %Gallery-81766%

  • Ninja Gaiden characters to appear in Dynasty Warriors, vice versa

Merged game companies rarely fuse their franchises together, but when the two partnered entities' action-genre focus overlaps as much as Koei and Tecmo's do, inter-brand cameos come naturally. That's why we weren't shocked to hear that Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa and Warriors Orochi's Nu Wa would make appearances in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, respectively, of Dynasty Warriors Multi Raid. In addition, Multi Raiid's Sun Shang Xiang and Zhao Yun will appear as costumes in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. At this rate, we expect the many, many ninjas from Koei and Tecmo's respective properties will soon be thrown into a "ninja pool," which players of any their titles will be able to choose from. For the record, we're strong advocates for this ninja unionization. Fairer wages for our shiruken-slinging brethren!

  • Warriors Orochi: The Collective coming to PS3

The Blu-ray compilation of Warriors Orochi games, Musou Orochi Z, will be released in Japan later this week and, if online rental service GameFly is right, it could be coming to North America, too. A listing for Warriors Orochi: The Collective was discovered in GameFly's database by Siliconera and, by the sound of it, the two games are one and the same. This is not the first time that GameFly has prematurely unveiled upcoming games, having spoiled Atlus' Devil Summoner 2 surprise. For those who just can't get enough Warriors games from Koei, Warriors Orochi: The Collective combines the first two PS2 Orochi games onto a single Blu-ray disc with upgrades and added content. It'll be the first Orochi title to appear on the PS3.

Orochi games have been making the rounds on PS2, 360 and even the PSP; however, there were no titles on the PS3. Well, until now that is. Musou Orochi Z was just recently announced for Japan. It's not a new game but actually a compilation of both Orochi 1 & 2 beat'em ups on Blu-ray. This new release supposedly will have upgraded graphics, more enemies on screen at once, four new playable characters and 12 fresh Story Mode chapters. The game is expected to hit Japan on March 12. Though a release in other territories has yet to be confirmed, StrategyInformer -- who has contacted Koei -- reports that a European version is very likely. Said a Koei rep to SI: "No definite plans yet but the Warriors Orochi games proved really popular over here [in Europe] so I'm sure it will." It's a very informal answer, but at least there are some signs of interest internally.Source 1 - PS3 HyperSource 2 - StrategyInformer

  • Shipping this week: Hell's LEGO hunting edition

We've got five (count 'em, five) new Xbox 360 games this week. Probably the biggest of the bunch is Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, which finally arrives after numerous delays. Aside from Brothers in Arms we have LEGO Batman, which we imagine will be an awful lot like LEGO Indiana Jones which was an awful lot like LEGO Star Wars. We question whether or not the somewhat addictive charm will hold out this time. To round out the week, we've got off-road racing, hacking and slashing, and ... um ... hunting. Consider the fall gaming flood postponed. Baja: Edge of Control Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway Warriors Orochi 2 Cablela's Dangerous Hunts 2009 LEGO Batman

All right, we've got two new games from two different companies. First up is Koei's Musou Orochi: Maou Sairin (Warriors Orochi 2) which is probably one of those "new" titles Koei has been talking about recently. It's a port of the PS2 game which will be out later this month in North America. The PSP port is scheduled for Japan this November with new characters and ad hoc multiplayer. The second title is Capcom's Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes. The series has never left done poorly outside Asia, so we're not banking on this one getting localized. Battle Heroes has 2-on-2 battles and 4-player ad hoc. Battle Heroes is scheduled for Spring 2009 in Japan. Are you sensing a pattern in Japanese PSP development? Notice how all games now seem to be touting the multiplayer co-op ad hoc? Thanks to Monster Hunter, developers have finally found a cash cow in the PSP.Source 1Source 2

  • Warriors Orochi ships over 1.5 million, sequel announced

Despite flirting with futuristic racing, it's no secret that Koei's heart has always belonged to cutting swaths through bad guys, keeping their population under control with the mashing of buttons in such series as Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, or in the case of Warriors Orochi, both at the same time. Warriors Orochi, which fused both franchises for a crossover fiesta, was released last year for multiple platforms, and according to a statement from Koei this afternoon has shipped more than 1.5 million units worldwide. Granted this simply represents the number of copies the company has thrown on the back of a truck, and not how many that players have actually been taken home and played. Even so, this hasn't stopped Koei from confirming that it also plans to bring Warriors Orochi 2 to North America, giving PS2 and Xbox 360 players another means to sacrifice thumbs and delete evil doers en masse this September.

What can we say? Koei likes their Warriors formula. There's something different about Warriors Orochi though. Even though we've sifted through similar games, nay, almost identical games in the past, this title stands out. Perhaps it's the fact it's not lifted from the pages of history. Perhaps it's the sheer size of the character roster. Maybe we were just bored. Still, for Warriors fans, Warriors Orochi is the best of the franchise on the PSP, but everyone else will find the game repetitive and just like the others.%Gallery-16619%

Koei is rather "comfortable" with the hack 'n slash formula they've refined over the years. In fact, their upcoming PSP title, Warriors Orochi is a blend of their most successful button mashers: Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. As you can tell by this gameplay footage, if you've seen any of these games in action before, this will look awfully familiar ...Check out the rest of the vids here.

For all those impulse-importer Europeans out there, hold off your orders for just a second because one more PSP title will be heading your way. That title is Warriors Orochi, scheduled to hit the European continent on March 28 -- three days after the game's North American release. Warriors Orochi is the amalgamation of Koei's two huge action franchises: Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors; the game takes all the familiar faces from past games and tosses them together for some fanboyish team-ups and storylines. We can't wait to rip it up on the PSP, even if we already did so on the PS2 version. Anyway, it's nice to know that Europeans can share in the 500+ combo kills at the same time we do.

Koei's hack and slash adventure, Warriors Orochi is heading to PSP. Originally on PS2 and Xbox 360, Orochi combined the worlds of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors into one super-ultra-warrior-fest. The PSP version will hopefully receive some significant changes -- the original game was bashed by the critics.Expect this historical time-bender in Japan next February.
