Previously we learned that character customization in Albion Online would include a unique system for customizing gear where players can add any crafted spell to any piece of equipment. Players can eschew cookie-cutter character molds and choose any combination they want, but they can also play up the inherent characteristics of a particular weapon or armor piece. Armor-wise, cloth pieces will have natural enhancements for mana regeneration, stealth, energy shields, or cleanse; plate piece enhancements, on the other hand, are about protection, instant self-heals, and survival mechanics. Weapons also have their own inherent characteristics: Broadswords have defensive characteristics, axes have offensive damage, and one-handed hammers have healing. To learn more about Albion Online, check out Massively's exclusive interview. Interested players can sign up for beta on the official site. [Source: Sandbox Interactive press release]

  • Battlefield 4 ups the ante on weapon customization options

Firearm options have been expanded in Battlefield 4, providing soldiers with a dizzying array of customization options for their boomsticks. DICE has tripled the amount of accessories for each gun, plus each firearm has an increased amount of accessory slots now. A single assault rifle has the potential for 240,000 different set-ups in Battlefield 4. There are also a host of camouflage patterns to employ, with 16 different sub-options for each pattern. There's even adaptive camouflage that changes depending on the map you're playing on. Snipers also get new options, with expanded scopes and the ability to zero your rifle – a special calibration that helps with gauging bullet drop when aiming at far-off targets. Finally, Battlefield 4 tosses in Battle Pickups, deadly map-specific weapons that anyone can grab during a match.

We've never felt satisfied by the weapon customization options afforded to us by first-person shooters. Oh, three different kinds of scopes? An optional grenade launcher attachment? Yeah, those are pretty cool, we guess -- however, we'd also like a different stock, ammo clip, suppressor and barrel on there as well. Hey, while we're at it, we also need a blender. You know, for when we require a cool coconut smoothie in the middle of a heated firefight. The latest trailer for Army of Two: The 40th Day gives us a look into the weapon customization engine we've always dreamed of, giving us unparalleled control over our in-game boomsticks. You can quickly turn your military grade M107 into a hulking, unwieldy monstrosity, complete with hideous, circus-themed camouflage. Sadly, the above trailer doesn't show off any kitchen appliance attachments -- we're sure they'll show up as DLC shortly after the game launches on January 12.

  • One thing leads to another - Cryptic's shields lead to custom weapons

Cryptic Studios is in full swing on development of the free expansion to City of Heroes/City of Villains, Issue 11: A Stitch In Time. On MMORPG.com this week the people at Cryptic Studios talk about weapon customization. Shields - a frequently requested feature - led to quite a bit of investigation into extending the underlying mechanics. While shields turned out to be too big a job for Issue 11 (look for them in Issue 12!), the work led on to customization of weapons. It's not final yet, but as with nearly everything that rolls out of Cryptic Studios, it looks very, very cool indeed. I can hardly wait!
