The Wii has already set more than its share of sales records, but it looks like Nintendo has now claimed another big one, with the latest NPD figures indicating that the Wii has become the fastest-selling console ever in the United States. That milestone was apparently marked when the Wii sailed past 20 million consoles sold after just 31 months on the market, although that number is of course just a small part of the more than 50 million consoles shipped worldwide which, incidentally, has already made the Wii the fastest-selling console in the world.[Via Joystiq]

The video game industry has gotten a lot of credit for continuing to grow in the face of an economic downturn, but it seems as though our back patting should be focused on one red overall-clad plumber. Nintendo claims that it accounted for most of the industry's growth in 2008. And by most, we mean 99 percent. We thought about double checking that astounding figure, but a quick look at the NPDs was enough to convince us that it sounds, pardon the pun, on the money. In fact, we heard that Nintendo is considering an anti-bailout where the company buys a bunch of groceries for Uncle Sam and leaves it on his doorstep, with a little note that says, "From Your Guardian Angel." It's sweet.

If you're on the hunt for a Wii this holiday season, then Walmart.com just might have you covered. The retail giant will supposedly be selling "tens of thousands" of Wiis starting now. If you're looking for just the console, or a bundle package, Walmart will have several different options available to consumers, starting with the console alone ($250) on up to a bundle package featuring Wii Fit ($460). Of course, now that the word is out, there might not be much time for you to nab one of your own. So we suggest you get to it.[Via Joystiq]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Wii_hits_10_9m_in_US_becomes_console_leader'; Nintendo has sent their second text message out (here's the first): "After just 20 mos, Wii is the new console leader in the US @ nearly 10.9 million units, says NPD 2day". (For the record, that's 102 out of 160 possible SMS characters. There's no excuse to write "2day.") So to translate, the Nintendo Wii has finally overtaken Microsoft as King of America. Last we checked in May, Wii was at 9.5 million
