WoW Moviewatch: Hunters Are Just Awesome
Did you know hunters are just awesome? If you didn't, you may want to check out today's video. The song is a collaboration by many notable members of the hunter community, organized by WoW Insider's Brian Wood, also known as Frostheim of the Warcraft Hunters Union and the Hunting Party Podcast. The video isn't too complex, but the song should warm the hearts of our many hunter readers out there, and remind them how awesome their class is. It may also make the rest of us envious that our own communities don't have multiple theme songs (I guess rogues do, actually). This collaboration is two years in the making. I remember at WoW Insider's BlizzCon 2012 party, Frostheim ran up to me with a big grin on his face and said he'd just recorded one of our notable guests (Aron Eisenburg? Felicia Day, perhaps?) saying, "hunters are just awesome!" To find out who it was, check out the video. Oh, and don't forget to heal hunter pets!
WoW Moviewatch: Bad Girls ft. Sindragosa
My choice musical genre is electronica, and as such, words can't describe my love for Mr. Voletron. Ever since I heard his first WoW remix, XT-002 - U R Bad Toys, I've been a big fan of his. With that said, I was quite pleased when I came across this music video for Mr. Voletron's Bad Girls remix. It had been a while since I'd heard the song, and hearing it again really brought back some nice memories from raiding Icecrown Citadel. If you've been raiding since The Burning Crusade, it might even take you back further than that. The video is by Khayllys, who you may already know for creating the machinima for Hunter, Night Elf ERP, and ZA. This particular video doesn't stray too far outside of Khaylly's usual visual style, using lots of soft edges, high color saturation, and blurred backgrounds. The editing matches the pace of the song really well, though, jumping around and creating an almost psychedelic effect that I really liked. Now if someone would just make a music video for Madness Will Consume You (one of my favorite Mr. Voletron tracks), I'd be really happy. Anyone? Maybe Paus? Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: I Went Fire On My Mage
Adam didn't convince me to do Moviewatch today -- I just decided to help myself to the job. I have a soft spot in my heart for machinima, mostly because I've always wanted to be a machinima artist myself. Unfortunately, I'm held back by the fact that I use a Mac. Yeah ... Anyway, today's video is a music video for Sharm's I Went Fire On My Mage, a parody of Set Fire to the Rain by Adele. The parody tells the story of an arcane mage who decides to switch specs to fire after she realizes she doesn't have the physical endurance to continue playing arcane. (That will make more sense after you watch the video.) Sharm's lyrics are brilliantly funny and fit in well with the original music. In terms of the lyrics, it's definitely one of the stronger WoW music parodies I've heard. And as usual, she nails the execution of the song with her lovely voice. What else would you expect by now? The video was created by machinima artist Rogahar, who uses a combination of footage from in-game capture and WoW Model Viewer. The video adds a lot to the song, impressing a tone to it which I don't think I'd have noticed nearly as much if I'd just heard the song on its own. The opening and closing shots of the video in particular really set a sad and then remorseful mood to the story. My only complaint with the video is that by the third chorus, some of the images become a bit too repetitive, but seeing as this is Rogahar's first machinima (to my knowledge), I think it's forgiveable. WoW Moviewatch: Surfing with the Alien
Today's Moviewatch is another music video. Surfing with the Alien is a song performed by guitarist Joe Satriani, who's about as well-qualified a musician as you could hope to hear. Kakashisan built this video as a backdrop to the instrumental, giving action to Satriani's song.This video is going to be one of my long-term favorites. In my opinion, it's damned near perfect. Satriani's music is astoundingly good, and Kakashisan didn't try and overwhelm that music by over-producing his video. The imagery is basic, streamlined, and not complex. The action doesn't distract the audience from what we're hearing.While Kakashisan does use the same L70ETC models that every other music video uses, he made a very key change in the lead guitarist. The blood elf is bald, like Joe Satriani himself. It's a subtle touch that lends a lot of credibility to the video, backing up Kakashisan's homage to the original artist. The carpet chase mirrors Surfing's sense of motion, without trying to add false narrative. Sometimes, "simple" works best. I would not say Kakashisan's work is "simple," of course, but I will say that he kept his context appropriate to the work. WoW Moviewatch: I'm no good
I am, in general, a pretty big fan of Legs's body of work. This WoW music video take on Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" is one of my favorites, even though it was first released a while back. The video is titled I'm no good, as it's very much a direct carry-over of Winehouse's song. As the video's story goes, it's about a couple who are having some "faithfulness" issues. The scenery and action does a good job of mirroring the song's lyrics. Legs's costume work is, of course, very strong. And while I've long admitted I'm a little burned out on the Blood Elf thing, the singing belf chosen by Legs is actually a pretty good fit for Winehouse's persona. I think this is some of the best "band" footage I've seen in videos. L70ETC lends itself to "Hard rock montage!" Legs, however, has managed to create a soulful and almost "fun" vista in which the boys can operate. I think some of that might be the music soundtrack, but I could almost expect to see these guys in my local coffeehouse. If you haven't seen this one before, here's hoping you enjoy it. WoW Moviewatch: Blood Elven Paso Doble
One of the challenges of making Machinima using World of Warcraft is the limited number of emotes for the machinimist to work with. So attempting to recreate a dance that is not part of the character's repertoire is an exceptional feat. And this video pulled it off brilliantly.For those of you not familiar with the Paso Doble, it is a Latin dance of power, passion and precision. Check out the 2005 IDSF Grand Slam FInalists performing the dance. WoW Moviewatch: I'm So Sick
Baron Soosdon has outdone himself this time. And that's saying alot. Using the WoW Model Viewer, some amazing editing tricks and a song from the "Resident Evil: Extinction" soundtrack, he has created a music video that looks better than 99% of the professionally made crud you see on MTV.For a wider screen, higher resolution version, use the Stage 6 link. I would embed that version here if it didn't break the blog format.
