People who are seriously after HDR output tend to pony up the dough for a big and chunky DSLR, knowing they'll get the highest quality possible. But if you're short on cash, here's a homebrewed mod that combines a gutted Polaroid x530 Foveon shooter with a Viliv to produce HDR-like imagery on the cheap. Essentially, the Viliv does all the processing and control work, while the el cheapo camera is used for its ability to save to raw format. You could instead pick up a compact Ricoh CX1 and save yourself a lot of trouble, but where's the fun and tinkering in that? The homemade hardware might not be pretty to look at, but make your way past the break to see if the results are worth the effort.[Via Hack a Day]

  • Philips' Xenium X530 treats batteries with kid gloves

We're not sure what's up with Philips' aversion to 3G, but the EDGE trend apparently continues with its latest, the Xenium X530 flip. Per usual for the Xenium series of phones, the X530 features gorilla-like battery endurance that'll supposedly give you some 850 hours of standby time and 8 hours of talk time -- and otherwise, the specs are all as good or better than what we're used to seeing out of Philips including an honest-to-goodness QVGA display, a 1-inch OLED on the outside, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio with RDS, and microSD expansion. No word on a release date, but considering the lack of GSM 850, North Americans can just go back to their battery-destroying smartphones and their stupid wall outlets.[Via Unwired View]

Samsung looks to be set to let loose a pair of new slider handsets, with a bevy of pics of the X530 and E250 cropping up on Czech website iDNES. Complete details are a bit sketchy (and in Czech), but the X530 (pictured above) looks to be a slight variation on the D900, packing EDGE support, along with Bluetooth, IrDA, and the bare-minimum VGA camera, all in a 13.9 mm slim package. We first caught wind of the E250 late last month courtesy of our friends at the FCC, but we unfortunately don't know much more about it than we did then -- though you can peep a nice pic of it after the break, and couple more by clicking on the read link.[Via Slashphone]
