  • Xbox 360 HD DVD drive hits $19.99 in Canada

Although the €9.99 Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on over in Ireland is likely still the cheapest way to snag one from a retail location, that flight to Dublin is apt to offset any potential savings. Nevertheless, those in Canada can come awfully close to said deal by visiting FutureShop, which is currently offering the once-molten hot unit for a mere $19.99. Unfortunately, it seems sold out online, but you can certainly phone up your local B&M location and hope for the best.[Thanks, Andrew]

And you thought $49.99 was cheap. Word on the street has it that Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, which has been seen as slightly less valuable since Toshiba pulled the plug on the once mighty red format, has stooped to €9.99 across the pond at GameStop (among other locales). For those not savvy on the absurd depreciation of the US dollar, we're talking $15.47 -- and that's with a Media Center remote bundled in, too. We're totally straight-faced when we say that's actually not a half bad deal if you're a fan of the media already out there, but the parsimonious among us are definitely waiting for these to come bundled with our favorite cereals before pulling the trigger.[Thanks, Conor]

  • Xbox 360 HD DVD player now officially $129.99

It's already taken the plunge at a number of retailers, but Microsoft has just now gotten official with the new $129.99 price point for the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on (which still includes a copy of King Kong and the offer for five free HD DVDs by mail). Of course, that price is the MSRP, which means we could very well be seeing even bigger discounts on the drive at retailers, even if they aren't all as steep as Amazon's all too brief $80 bonanza.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

And here you thought $199 $179 $129 was a good deal for Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. Amazon is now selling it for $79.99 with free shipping and 6 free HD DVDs. Now that's what we call Wow Microsoft.Update: Nice, you broke Amazon -- they're sold out.[Thanks, Fantastic1_]

  • Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD player: 269000 sold

We're betting we weren't the only ones curious to know how many Xbox 360 HD DVD players were included in the 750,000 number we saw thrown out late last month, and while 269,000 may sound massive at first, it's really not all that surprising. If you'll recall, Microsoft managed to move 92,000 of these things last holiday season, and considering its perpetually lower price (comparatively speaking), it's been a fairly attractive option for Xbox 360 owners looking to get into the HD DVD game. According to new sales figures outed by NPD Group, over one-third of the HD DVD standalone player market is made up of the aforementioned units, and the attach rate to the 360 install base sits at 3.4-percent. 'Course, if the price of this thing keeps a-droppin', we could easily see that percentage climb higher once the dust settles from the end-of-year buying frenzy.[Via High-Def Digest]

Not even six months after the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive fell to an oh-so-tempting $179, the unit has now reached an even lower low. That's right kids, the attachment has just plummeted to a juicy $129, which would honestly sound a whole lot sweeter if not for that sub-$100 HD DVD fiasco still lingering in our heads. Nevertheless, we've already noticed the player's new price tag over at Amazon and Toys R Us, but feel free to point out any other price slashings in comments below.Read - $129.99 at AmazonRead - $129.98 at Toys R Us

Details are beyond sketchy at this point, but Personal Computer World is reporting that Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European HD DVD business director, announced that Microsoft would be shipping a revised 360 HD DVD drive in 2008 -- presumably one with improved support for HD DVD's HDi interactive features, which Microsoft is touting as being "nine months" ahead of Blu-ray. That's all the info we have for now, but you can bet we haven't heard the last of this one.[Thanks, ChronoZaga]

We just learned what happens when you discount the price on the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and throw in five free movies. Our conclusion, they sell more than they did before. Looking through Amazon.com's sales rank movers and shakers, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player's sales increased over 1,000% since the $20 price drop. Who needs economics 101 when you've got Amazon.com. And if you're looking to cash in on this super sweet deal, give your local Best Buy a try, some stores are offering it for $149.

It seems that Microsoft's new $179 price tag for its Xbox 360 HD DVD player just wasn't low enough for Best Buy, as the retailer is now offering the drive for the low, low price of $149.99. Of course, it's currently sold out, and it's not clear if this is a permanent price, a pricing mistake, or a one time sale (although it's not advertised as such). As far as we can tell, Best Buy appears to be the only retailer to offer the further discounted price, though we'll certainly keep an eye out to see if others follow suit.[Thanks, Alex]Update: Fun's over -- the price is now back to $179 on Best Buy's website. In related news, however, Joystiq has turned up some evidence of a new 360 bundle apparently set to be released on August 12th for $399, which seems likely to include Top Spin 2 as a pack-in.

The already nicely priced Xbox 360 HD DVD player just got slashed to $179. The new US-only, retail pricing also includes 5 free HD DVD flicks when purchasing the player between August 1st and September 30th -- you know, the same time period 300 and Heroes goes on sale in HD DVD format. Unfortunately, the free titles must be made from a selection of just 15 pre-selected films which Toshiba considers "popular." Nevertheless, the $20 price cut makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD player all the more enticing as an easily hacked, USB-player for HD flicks on your PC.[Thanks, Andrew and PacoDG]

If you're in the market for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and want to jump start your movie library, then this week may be the time to make the purchase. At both Best Buy and Circuit City you'll get two HD DVDs for free with a 360 HD DVD player purchase. Which leaves you with a total of three free movies, because the King Kong HD DVD is included with the player. Now only if they offered a free 50" 1080p HD television as part of the deal, then we'd probably pick up two. Read - Best Buy offerRead - Circuit City offer
