  • Titanfall helps the Xbox One almost double weekly sales in the UK

The Xbox One saw UK week-on-week sales jump by 96 percent alongside the arrival of Titanfall, with the game's bundle accounting for 70 percent of the hardware shifted. It's no surprise, then, that EA's multiplayer shooter went top of the country's sales charts, despite a valiant effort from Dark Souls 2. Namco brought Demon's Souls to Europe almost a year after Atlus released it North America, and it debuted sixth in the UK charts back in June 2010. A year later, Dark Souls landed in third, and its sequel went one better with a 20 percent rise in UK sales over its predecessor. Not a bad performance for the action-RPG series, especially since at one stage it looked uncertain to even reach Europe. Looking down the UK charts, a month that's been packed with new releases meant there wasn't enough space in the top ten for Yoshi's New Island. The 3DS game placed 12th. [Image: EA]

  • Joystiq Weekly: Titanfall review, BAFTA Awards, NPD data and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Titanfall is one of those games that's fun even if you're not playing it. Watching a group of friends suffer the fallout from a crumbling strategy plan is easy to laugh about, especially as the final pilot from their crew gets run over by a Titan. It seems that, despite a few hiccups on Xbox Live's side of things, fans have also been able to enjoy a relatively smooth launch. An online-oriented experience that doesn't stumble its way into functionality? We know, it's crazy. We've got a review of both the game and the online experience, but if giant robots aren't really your thing, we've got our take on Dark Souls 2, Towerfall: Ascension and Yoshi's New Island, too. This week also brought us fresh NPD data, a Costume Quest 2 reveal and more, all of which is neatly compiled for you after the break in the Joystiq Weekly. [Image: Respawn]

  • Yoshi's New Island review: Not quite dino-might

Mario games, the good ones, anyway, are a gestalt, rising above their sundry components to become something truly special. Yoshi's New Island is no such beast. It is exactly the sum of its expertly-hewn parts, offering a platforming experience that is impressive in its intricacy, nonetheless feeling like the result of a well-researched equation. It plays all the right notes without ever quite making exquisite music, masterful but not special. Sure, you'll dig it, but will it be a game you look back on with wistful nostalgia ten years from now? Probably not. Once again, the stork has proven that he is particularly ill-suited to transporting newborns, as Baby Mario and Baby Luigi go missing. Mario tumbles to earth on the new, egg-shaped island home of the multicolored Yoshis, and immediately starts crawling off in search of his diapered brother. The Yoshis, being the sweet-hearted souls they are (or perhaps simply reluctant to take up child rearing) decide to help the tyke locate his sibling, each Yoshi handing Mario off to the next as they navigate the treacherous and oddly-constructed terrain of the island. Seriously, who moves into a place littered with spike traps and falling platforms? At least the property taxes are probably low.

  • New Nintendo eShop releases: Yoshi's New Island, Super Mario Bros - The Lost Levels

There are plenty of new releases to dig into on the eShop this week, including the return of everyone's favorite sneaker-wearing dino-thing in 3DS platformer Yoshi's New Island. All but one of the games out this week are for the Nintendo handheld; the only new release on Wii U is a retro release, and that's Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. The Lost Levels is the true sequel to the original Super Mario Bros. - SMB2 is awesome, we know, but facts are facts. The game famously didn't make it out of Japan until it was re-released in the SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars, and finally Western players got to grips with some really challenging Mario. Not that the first SMB isn't tricky because it is, especially if you don't use warp pipes, but The Lost Levels is, er, another level. Anyway, the Virtual Console version is the NES game rather than the SNES re-release, and it's priced at $5. Finally, look out for discounts on Steamworld Dig on 3DS, which should be going down from $9 to $4.50 - that sale ends 9AM PT/12PM ET on March 16 - and on Zen's collection of 3DS pinball games, which will all be half-off between March 17-31.

  • Yoshi's New Island 3DS XL confirmed for North America

Yoshi is the latest Nintendo mascot to get his own 3DS XL, and of course it's a lime-green-and-white number. The delighted dinosaur and a single egg lead the way on the front, and on the back there's a wee procession of eggs bringing up the rear. A word of warning: While it's launching alongside Yoshi's New Island on March 14, the $199 bundle doesn't include the game itself. Why you'd get this particular handheld without the game is rather beyond us, but there we are. Series producer Takashi Tezuka says Yoshi's New Island is a direct sequel to SNES classic Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and the 2D platformer re-embraces its penchant for swallowing up enemies and chucking eggs around a lot. This time you'll find giant eggs to tear up the screen with, along with sections with rail-cart and helicopter versions of Yoshi - because why wouldn't you make an adorable helicopter version of Yoshi? • Report: Yoshi's New Island 3DS XL bundle planned for March 14

Yoshi is getting a special 3DS XL bundle for his third shift of babysitting, Yoshi's New Island, according to a report by IGN. The report expands on UK retailer Base's listing for such a bundle - while IGN confirms the bundle's existence for North America, the report notes that Base's listing image is a "fan mock-up." The Yoshi bundle is due on March 14, sharing a release date with Yoshi's New Island. Base lists the bundle at £199, which matches the Zelda 3DS XL bundle's UK launch price. The North American version of the Zelda bundle sold for $219.99. We got our hopes up last year for a special Luigi 2DS last year, but that turned out to be the handiwork of Rose Colored Gaming. We got a Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 3DS XL bundle instead, which is almost as cool as the RCG's Luigi-engraved 2DS mod. Almost. [Image: Nintendo]

Yoshi is set to explore Yoshi's New Island's terrain on March 14, but luckily it still seems to be covered in enemies that he can turn into ammo. Collecting money, turning into vehicles, digesting huge eggs - Yoshi's still doing a lot of work for a shrill baby that should have been left in Stage 1.

Europeans will reach the shores of Yoshi's New Island alongside Americans, after Nintendo of Europe announced a March 14 landing today. The platformer was pinned for spring in Europe, but Nintendo's penchant for a transcontinental date jumble didn't apply this time. Nintendo also showcased the game's box art today, just in case it needed saying the 3DS game is a sequel to SNES Classic Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. To that effect, series creator Takashi Tezuka is producing the game this time around.

Yoshi's New Island has a new release date of March 14 in North America, after Nintendo upgraded its springtime window this morning. The game will be released at retail and on the eShop, although Nintendo didn't disclose a price in its announcement. The 3DS follow-up to SNES game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island has a familiar look to it, with the green dino-hero once again saddled with a baby Mario and trailed by a line of eggs that he can chuck around the screen(s). No surprises, then, that series' original creator Takashi Tezuka has been involved with the game's development.

What's more, the series' original creator Takashi Tezuka is working on the project. Yoshi's New Island was first announced in June and was originally expected to launch this holiday season. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata also announced a new Wii U action game known as Hyrule Warriors during the stream.
