We got our grubby mitts all over the latest and greatest from Sony Ericsson, including that new C905 8 megapixel monstrosity, and, of course, the Xperia X1. The C905 is certainly no slouch in the camera department, with that for-serious Xenon flash and dedicated camera keys, but you'll pay for it in thickness -- the C905 is a good deal thicker than its Walkman counterparts, though that does leave room for a nicely formed slide-out keypad. The C905 is capable of geotagging pictures, but can't upload on the fly to photo services just yet like Nokia's new phones, though such capability is in the works. While the C905 seems finely honed for a specific purpose, the Z780 flip phone seems much more plain jane in comparison, with a rather large size despite its "slim proportions" and a lack of detailing in styling to make it really pop. But, of course, who needs all that featurephone nonsense when you've got the X1 staring 'em all down? We got to twiddle around with an out-of-battery Xperia for a minute, and it's certainly one of the thickest and heaviest phones headed for the market in the near future -- though the upside of that is some glorious build quality, an immense WVGA screen and an expansive, highly touchable keyboard. SE certainly does seem to have something for everybody, but with Moto apparently working on an 8 megapixel camera of its own, and touchscreen rivals to the X1 hogging all the spotlight, SE's isn't looking at an easy road to bumping back that profitability. Oh, and in case you were interested, the gallery below also includes the W760 sporting a black finish, a pink-ish red-ish W580 and the wonderfully tiny W350i.%Gallery-26014%

When we saw the Z780i flip from Sony Ericsson pass through the FCC with AT&T branding, the vaguely disturbing me-too RAZR look left us barely able to muster the energy to even bother writing about the darned thing. We're still not picturing ourselves sliding one of these into our pockets any time soon, but new pictures have appeared of a mysterious woman brandishing a metallic blue version of the phone with AT&T's logo still stuck on there, and we've got to say -- it looks like a promising improvement over the uninspired black version that the FCC was forced to work with. HSDPA's always alright in our book, so just release it to AT&T in this color, guys, and we'll cut you a little slack on this one.[Via Sony Ericsson Blog]

We can think of at least one Sony Ericsson model we'd rather see launched on AT&T than this, but life isn't always fair, and apparently, neither is AT&T. The recently-announced Z780i seemed destined for the carrier pretty much from the moment we saw that it sported HSDPA 850 / 2100, and sure enough, the model that Sony Ericsson decided to submit for the FCC's perusal comes well-equipped with AT&T branding (and just look at that cute little logo on the d-pad!). We'll save our genuine excitement for hotter wares, but sure, we're glad to see that Sony Ericsson's commitment to the US market seems to be holding steady.[Via Phone Scoop]

  • Sony Ericsson launches ho hum Z780 and G502 cellphones as profits plunge

In a move meant to, uh, distract investors from its announced 48% profit downturn (compared to Q1 of the previous year), Sony Ericsson just announced a pair of mid-range handsets. The Z780 clamshell -- now official -- is the global sister to the announced Z770 for Europe. As such, she comes packing UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radios. While it comes loaded with Google Maps for Mobile and aGPS navigation, you won't get much use from it on that itty bitty 128 x 160 pixel display of unknown dimensions. Hell, that bezel chews up an equivalent amount of real estate. The G502 candybar also features Maps but lacks aGPS. No worries for US Americans though as it's likely to stay put in Europe with UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 radios. Both will feature M2 memory expansion, Bluetooth, and 2 megapixel cameras when they launch in "selected markets" come Q2. Sorry Sony Ericsson, but we're not seeing a lot here to distract investors (or consumers) for very long. Xperia X1 please?Update: Sony Ericsson has published conflicting information about the Z780's resolution. It's 2.2-inches and 320 x 240 pixels in the press release but 128 x 160 pixels on the product page.Read -- ProfitsRead -- Phones
