The latest classic video game series to be resurrected as a barely recognizable, completely different game on phones is Zaxxon. No longer a scrolling shooter with a frustrating isometric perspective, Zaxxon Escape is now a behind-the-back third-person game for iOS and Android. With only a few screenshots and the teasiest of teaser trailers, it's difficult to determine just how this new game plays, except to say it's probably nothing like Zaxxon. The game is due "soon" on iPhone, iPad, and Android. Get your SegaScope 3-D glasses ready!

  • VC in Brief: Zaxxon (VC Arcade)

This week's Virtual Console release is Sega's Zaxxon for the VC Arcade, an isometric viewpoint shmup from the early '80s. There's nothing flashy or particularly complex about Zaxxon, other than the difficulty of quickly ascertaining your altitude and relative safety in your immediate surroundings. Basically, you crash into stuff or get shot by stuff or run out of gas and then crash into stuff, as you can see in the latest episode of VC in Brief above. It's a tough life out there in space, gunning down countless unmarked ships, missile silos and cannons -- believe. Zaxxon (Arcade, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer VC in Brief as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks like that.

[The Arcade Flyer Archive] The original arcade version of Zaxxon is available on Virtual Console this week! Trust us: this is very exciting if you're old. However, as we like to do when this sort of thing pops up, we're offering this public service announcement: if you have either the PS2 Sega Genesis Collection disc or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, you already have this game! Check out all the WiiWare, Virtual Console, and DSiWare offerings after the break.

It's a fantastic day to be in Europe like retro and retro-style downloadable games. Coinciding with that amazing Bit.Trip Runner trailer, its predecessor Bit.Trip Void is now avaiable on WiiWare, along with the authentically NES-style Mega Man 10! There's even a real retro game available on Virtual Console -- a pretty good one, at that. The theme even extends to DSiWare, where you can get Dark Void Zero, a promotional game that outshines the game it was meant to promote. You can play it on the DSi XL, which was released in Europe today! Zaxxon (Arcade, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Bit.Trip Void (WiiWare, 1-4 players, 600 Wii Points) Mega Man 10 (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) Dark Void Zero (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Flips: The Bubonic Boulders (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Globulos Party (DSiWare, 1-2 players, 500 DSi Points) Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Real Football 2010 (DSiWare, 1-4 players, 800 DSi Points) New English Training: Learn with Tempo - Advanced Edition (not available in the UK) (DSiWare, 1 player, 800 DSi Points)

Japanese Nintendo downloads: Phoenix Wright, Zaxxon, Photo Fighter X

The release list for the Japanese Wii and DSi Shops are a bit more restrained than the last couple of weeks, offering a much more manageable (read: smaller) selection of downloadable titles. On Virtual Console, for example, Sega's isometric arcade shmup Zaxxon is the only offering. Similarly, there's just one WiiWare game, but it's Phoenix Wright! DSiWare gets the cool Photo FIghter X, which lets you build fighting game characters from DSi camera snaps. More Paint By DS joins it, this time all about dogs; and in the requisite "puzzle game" positions are a new G.G. series entry and a Jupiter-developed game about rotating blocks to match colors. Zaxxon (Arcade, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (WiiWare, 1 player, 900 Wii Points) Shashin de Kakutou! Photo Fighter X! (DSiWare, 1-2 players, 200 DSi Points) G.G. Series Vertex (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Kanji Practice First Grade (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Artist ni Narou! Minna no Nurikai Inu-hen (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Atelier Deco La Doll (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Castle of Magic (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Panewa! • Final Fight 3, Metal Gear headline Japanese Virtual Console lineup next month

Metal Gear kept Japanese Wii owners waiting last month, as publisher D4 Enterprises missed the game's announced November release window. The tactical espionage action progenitor has snuck into December's lineup, along with another November refugee, Yie Ar Koutei no Gyakushuu. December will also see the arrival of Final Fight 3 for SNES, which features Guy and Haggar along with two new characters, all doing what they do best: punching people, eating garbage, and destroying lots of barrels. Of course, no Virtual Console schedule is complete without shmups, and December will see two: Ordyne, an adorable side-scroller from Namco, and Zaxxon, a classic Sega shooter with a confusing perspective. See the list after the break. [Via Andriasang]
