There is but one game on Xbox Live Arcade this week. That game is Zeit2, a shooter from Ubisoft with an interesting time control mechanic. Before you dive in though, know this: The controls are inverted and, as far as we could tell, they can't be un-inverted. Beyond this potential issue, the game's pretty nifty. Check out this latest XBLA in Brief to see if Zeit2 might tickle your fancy. Update: It seems that Zeit2 bases flight controls on your default Xbox profile preferences. If your profile default is set to inverted, the controls will be inverted. To change it, you'll have to open the guide and change your default preferences. Weird. Ubisoft's time-traveling shmup, Zeit 2, is the lone game listed in Major Nelson's latest list of upcoming Xbox Live Arcade releases. If that doesn't quite sate your gaming appetite, Live is also throwing a random "Back from the Dead" promotion by cutting the price of Zombie Apocalypse and The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai to 400 Points ($5) each. Plants vs. Zombies will continue the promotion the following week by going on sale for 800 Points ($10). Next week will also discount "more than 25 pieces" of DLC from Activision, including Call of Duty map packs, Guitar Hero songs and Arcade games. EA will get its chance starting January 18, with an equally vague promise of "one-time savings" on EA "content." For the full schedule of Xbox Live releases, check past the break.

  • Zeit 2 time-traveling to PC and 360 via Ubisoft

The ESRB has rated Zeit 2. While we already knew the shooter was coming to Xbox 360 and PC later this year, the rating has outed its publisher -- Ubisoft. Fans of shmups will probably take comfort in reading the description of the game: "This is a side-scrolling shooter game in which players control a bubble-covered spaceship as it shoots waves of enemies and collects power-up items. Stylized enemies disappear in explosions when defeated; one power-up causes all on-screen enemies to explode at once." What the ESRB doesn't mention is the time-traveling gimmick that Zeit 2 employs. You'll be able to fast-forward time to get through sections of the game more quickly, and rewind time to deal even more damage to your enemies. Not quite making sense? Don't worry, we've embedded the trailer after the break.

  • Brightside Games founded, working on Zeit 2 for PC and console

We're going to try our very best to write this post about Brightside Games becoming its own studio -- and announcing Zeit2, its first commercial release for Xbox 360 and PC, due out later this year -- without making any "look on the bright side" jokes. That would just be silly. Nope, we're not gonna note that the intrepid developers at Brightside must be elated to be walking on the greener pastures of employment after spending years toiling away at the Technical University of Berlin. No sir! And we certainly wouldn't point out that the studio's first game, a packaging of the developer's IGF entry, Zeit2, has already been signed by a "major global publisher" -- talk about the early bird catching the worm, eh? Okay, okay, we're sorry. But hey, a ... news post in the hand is worth ... two in the ... something? Enough!
