Wow, that takes me back to when I was a kid. They used to show a cartoon of that on the French channels when I was little. As the previous poster said, "Goldorack, Go!"
As a kid in the 70s, this guy and similar were made in plastic and stood almost two feet tall, in a toy line called "Shogun Warriors". ALL of them had a Right Hand that could rocket-off (powered by a spring). Some could also shoot missles, the one I had shot them out of his chest.
They would fight Godzilla, who could also shoot off his right hand. Godzilla did not shoot missles, but he could "breath fire".
There was also a Marvel Comic Book based on these characters.
I grew up on those shows back east (I'm old), so I sadly know exactly what they look like. Great Mazinger has a complete V on the chest, and not the segmented one like Mazinger for instance.
BTW, Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Grandizer (Goldarak), etc. are all children of that wacko Giant Robot godfather of Anime, Go Nagai.
As a kid, I recall reading in Questor magazine that the pilot of Mazinger Z, Koji Kabuto, after retiring from the Mazinger Project in his 40s became the mentor/adviser/old fart of the Grendizer pilot who happens to be an alien.
Can't believe I found this... Tranzor Z is how I remember it, and was one of my favorite shows when I was about 5 or 6 (aside from street hawk). Oh the laughs when we saw the boob missles. And wasn't there a villain who could remove his head? Man... I can even recall the opening music.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
This was for the release of a new total annihilation game, right? - No? They're just insane? Oh, okay.
This is a build of a classic Anime robot saucer combo known as Goldorak from way back for me.
found some stuff (mostly Frecnh) by this in English at:

Could those TV screen caps be related to this teaser trailer: http://www.tetsujin28.jp/ or is that something else?
In America he went by the name Tranzor Z.
I had never seen Tranzor Z and after comparing the pics (horn and chest V) it sure look like Tranzor is what they built.
But I will bet a weeks pay that Goldorak would woop Tranzor Z metal but anyday.

And what about his side-kick Aphrodite A, later named Diana A, who had the missle breasts?
To funny...
In the US, Tetsujin 28 was named "Gigantor." Completely different cartoon, and made about a generation earlier.
This is definitely a Mazinger, though I'm not sure if it's Mazinger Z or Great Mazinger, the upgraded giant robot from the follow-on series.
Too funny!
I had a toy that was part this and part Voltron—called Goggle V—as it came together from multiple vehicles....and yes it could shoot its fists off.

In the show (UFO Robot Grandizer), Koji is the guy who rides that dinky flying saucer around IIRC.
that looks badass
