Palm + VGA: What PalmSource needs to do

Palm OS Cobalt

Let's get some things straight: it's January of 2005 and there still isn't a single Palm-powered handheld with a VGA (640x480 pixel) resolution screen on the market. It's not that that it couldn't be done, since there is support for VGA in the Cobalt, the latest version of the Palm OS, it's just that no one (i.e. palmOne) has chosen to release a handheld running on Cobalt yet. In the meantime, Microsoft has been drawing some serious blood, they added support for VGA displays to Windows Mobile a while ago and there are already a fair number of Pocket PCs with VGA screens on the market. Is it too late for PalmSource to catch up? Our pal Ed Hardy over at Brighthand doesn't think so, but he does think that they'll have to improve on Windows Mobile in the few areas it falls short and that when using Cobalt with a VGA resolution screen uses should have the ability to seamlessly switch between two viewing modes, one where "fonts and graphics are larger and easier to read" and a true VGA mode which would "allow the user to see an entire web page in tiny type."
