Metal Gear Acid 2 for PSP to ship with "Solid Eye"-gaming attachment
It's getting ever-harder to look geek chic these days, what with everyone and their grandma walking down the street
rocking iPods,
Bluetooth headsets, and bulky
SPOT watches. In order to set yourself apart
from this flood of geek poseurs, Sony has announced that in addition to their
Talkman speech-interaction accessory, the upcoming Metal
Gear Acid 2 for PSP will require gamers to wear a binocular-like device in order to see portions of the game in 3D.
Taking a page out of Robert "Spy Kids 3-D" Rodriguez's playbook, MGA2's director Shinta Nojiri revealed the existence
of the "Solid Eye," as well as a few gameplay details, in an interview with Famitsu. No mention by Nojiri of
the possible consequences of wearing this Delta Force-type gear on security-heavy airplanes and subway cars.
UPDATE: Asahi.com has pic of the
attachment. [Thanks, Koi]

Seems crap. I'll still get one :P.
WG @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Man, you are SO going to look like a tool wearing these things. Worse than the tools with Bluetooth headsets.
"Look at me! I can't get laid!"
Dan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Robert "Spy kids 3-D" Rodriguez... ROFL. Anyway, does anyone else not know what gamelplay is?
Barry @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
That will compliment my FFVII leather jacket rather nicely. Helloooooo Ladies!
E @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
It'll certainly make the game harder to pirate.
hall @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
...and need more cash
AceMilo @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Another periferal that will only be used by one game, then thrown in the useless pile.

Sony:
"NEW VIRTUAL-REALITY for the PSP!!!!!!!!!!!
This new and inovatev idea that has never been tought of before, but if it did, it wouldn't have been a terible system and it sure wouldn't have given people BLISERING HEADACHES!!!!!!!!!"
Nice ;)

I heard the next Metal Gear for PS3 was going to come with a brain implant... to see parts of the game in 3d.
DidYouLoseASock @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Sony making the PSP into a Virtual boy...
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the idea behind these systems that they're PORTABLE? Now, not only will you have your slippery PSP, but you'll have some goggles that are used for PARTS of the game. In other words, for part of the game, you'll need to find a place to put these things when not being used ... or if you happen to go out without them, you may find yourself needing them despite not knowing you were going to come upon that part of the game. This is either a total joke ... or it's the dumbest idea ever to grace a handheld. Sony should learn from the mistakes of the Virtual Boy.
Steven Ratcliffe @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
virtual boy, PSP style!
Ryan gardner @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Um... These look painful. Especially when the little kid's older brother smacks him on the back of the head while he's playing the game. Ouch.
Max SMoke @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
This could well be the Return of the Virtual Boy! (only this time, it won't suck)
Ohmz @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
So... Portable gaming...
Where you are supposed to be able to play but remain alert to things ocuring in the periphery of your vision, like your boss coming into your cubicle...
Where you are supposed to be able to put the system in your pocket when you want to get off the bus or when your boss comes into the room.
Does this thing draw power or is it just an optical illusion thing like those red and blue glasses you used to get to watch Friday the 13th and Jaws in 3D.
This is baws, heavy baws.
xVariable @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
(Commet submitted after actual pic of device posted):
OMG. *That's* what it looks like? From the description, it sounded like some kind of slick-looking eyewear peripheral, but this... *this* is the most ridiculous, most retarded thing I've ever seen.
This has got to to a joke. Right? Someone tell me they're not seriously going to make this. Sony is about to fly headlong over the line, from geek to dork, in a single, st00pendus bound.
Pal @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Wow, I was looking at the top of it neglecting that there was a PSP under it...I thought that it was about the size of a quarter that fits on the top USB port somehow, and then I got the full picture...
These things are ridiculous! It better be cool to use...it's like a color VirtualBoy.
Clint @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
OMG this has got to be some photoshop geek's sick joke. Or Sony has completely gone banannas!!!
graison @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
how about just crossing your eyes?
MinceyFresh @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
This peripheral reminds me of the stereoscopic photo viewers that come with Loreo 3D cameras. What I believe it will do is cross your eyes for you... I'm assuming that you'll be able to play it in 3D w/o the peripheral if you're good at crossing your eyes... Haha... No, really, I'm serious. :D
woobwoob @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
i dont really see much point to this... maybe as something for the ps2/3, but not the PS "portable". look at the size of that thing! and i cant imagine it being fun to play if you have to put your face right up to it. esp since you'd have to put ur hands right up near your face to play it, which would be uncomfortable and cramped...
Old Number 7 @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Guys look! I just found a video of how to load it on there!

Steven @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
I seriuosly thoguht this was an early April fool's joke, but Gawd, it's real... Oh. My. Word. And people are really saying the PSP is the "cool" system.
Decee @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
This isn't for real... Sony's smarter than this... PSPortable <-- Weeell...
Tesla @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
While I agree with the idea of this peripheral making portability an issue I offer the possibility thinking on the option of tie in.
It would be pretty neat to be playing Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence or even Metal Gear Solid 4 and via USB plug in a PSP with this Konami peripheral. Now rather than using an item on your TV screen, you could use these "binoculars" in 3D throughout the game. I think that would be awesome.
Tak @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Yeeah.... That's practical -_-;;
howow @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
please scratch my psp more !!!
Wes @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
i don't see how anyone can say that Sony's smart in the gaming industry...1.)rushed the ps2 so it could beat dreamcast, gamecube and xbox are 3x better than it, 2.)launch a portable system for $250! (why would you buy a movie that you probably already have and watch it for 2 hours on a 4" screen? it makes no sense and the price range is ridiculous), 3.) a psp seems to be just another version of the very horrible ps2 and i've seen games up to $50 while i could get 2 brand new games for the DS for $50-60 4.)those ugly ass binoculars are just another reason not to buy this ps2 knock off.....
the only thing that was smart of them was to release the slimline at $150..(something they should have done 5 years ago)
Extinction @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
1) This is a foldable peice of cardboard, it doesnt affect portability. IT simply cuts the LCD in half (virtually) and the game simply displays 2 images, from a slightly different perpective
2) This is not required
3) It comes with the game
Blaze @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
Man, that's the ugliest thing that i ever seen. Sony is gonna fall to Nintendo if the keep doing this awful work. I expect sony made a new prototype of that...thing.
BlackZodiac @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
what is this for shit...damn, this just doesn't fit with psp
booga @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
ok, you guys have no f*# idea what you are talking about. all your ruckus is about is now you have another reason you're not getting laid.
i'll admit it's nerdy but forget how it looks. that thing is going to magnify the image 10x making it seem like you are at movie theater. second, it is going to make that movie theater 3d. third, most of the time you won't be watching a movie, you'll be playing an interactive video game.
you're all looking at the downsides, which are obvious. one, it's bulky, it won't be convient to take it with you. two, you'll look like a nerd. but then, how's that different than every other day? i rest my case
SheeEttin @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
And you are supposed to hold this thing four inches from your face? How are you going to keep your arms up like that for hours at a time?
raindog @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
If Nintendo came up with something like this it would at least be a lenticular screen you slide onto the top half of the DS, and it wouldn't require holding the thing up to your face like a Virtual Boy (because they've learned their lesson.)
In fact, I don't understand why they didn't make a lenticular overlay for the PSP, apart from it probably taking less CPU to display 2 images side by side rather than interlacing them vertically.
bleem! @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
I'm just wondering when some genius is gonna figure out how to use it for *ahem* internet content.

Patrick @ Dec 19th 2005 2:37AM
i dunno what most of u guyz are talkin about but i think that this will be awsome... i wonder if it will work on other games.. probable not may be for 3d at least.. I highly doubt that this is the final pic of how it is. they are still fixen it and creatin it, it is actually smaller, like the psp pic they first released.. it looked so gay and ugly...
