Motorola's new $30 cellphones target emerging markets

c113 and c113a

Today Motorola announced their new ultra-cheap C113 and C113a cellphones. The sub-$30US phones are launched in support of the Emerging Market Handset (EMH) program which aims to "advance the social and economic development of emerging markets through mobile communications." More than 2 billion people already have cellphones but that represents a mere 25 percent of those with coverage today. Bring down the cost and increase penetration, or so the thinking goes. Guess that's why ten carriers have already committed to purchasing 6 million of these function-over-form phones.
