Mazinger Kondo at IREX ROBO-ONE GP
We're not entirely sure what the ROBO-ONE GP 2005 contest was for (we're thinking most lifelike robot movement), but it was held on the last day of IREX 2005, the winner apparently receiving about $9,000. We don't know who won, but one of the ten finalists was this little kid and his Kondo that he outfitted to look like… Mazinger? And the kid even looked like an anime character himself, and appeared to be wearing a prototype HAL suit or something. Man, when we were little we had to animate our crappy Japanese action figures our damn selves (up hill, both ways).

Great Mazinger...
Ping @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
It's more Mazinger, less Voltron.
dreampc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
That kid looks hell-bent on world domination with that thing!!!
Marcos @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
yeah, that's Mazinger (sometimes known in the states as Tranzor).
Pal @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
How can you not know Mazinger Z? Ah well. For future reference, he's the first super robot to ever have a pilot inside the robot. Before Mazinger Z, every robot was controlled from afar with a controller, a la Tetsujin 28/Gigantor.

That is the most serious looking kid I have ever seen in my life.
Pal @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Err, Great Mazinger. They look similar. The differences are in the horns, wings, the V on the chest. In any case, it actually says so in the article!
"and the incredible Great Mazinger, that controls its arms by synchronising the movements of its "pilot"
Silly Engadget.
Kimura @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
Not Voltron, is Great Mazinger, the "big brother" the Mazinger Z (creations of the Go Nagai).
The boy is the future Tetsuya Tsurugi (Pilot of Great Mazinger) XD
David @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
they even call him great mazinger under the image of him in the article... did the person who posted the is on engadget even read it?
FSK1138 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
very cool
the next generation will have all the toys :)
wish i was 13 again...
BTW : it is not a "HAL" suit it looks like a
off the shelf "MOCAP" rig <----google
Reid Sorenson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
That's not a very good Voltron. Where are all the lion heads?
Joe Strout @ Dec 19th 2005 12:56AM
It's not an exoskeleton, nor is it an off-the-shelf rig; it's the custom robot control system for the Great Majingaa bot, built by the father and "piloted" by the son. These guys tend to clean up in the Robo-ONE competitions, which are basically boxing competitions where you are trying to knock your opponent down (and make them STAY down!). Here's a web page describing the control system, with links to the original (Japanese) web site about this team: http://www.robots-dreams.com/2005/10/robot_control_s.html#more

The Great Majingaa was great, as always, and dominated the competition. Still, I got a bigger kick out of watching the Santa robots - http://www.robots-dreams.com/2005/12/merry_robot_chr.html
