Microsoft drops Program Guide fee, subscribers get cash back

People who paid the $250 lifetime subscription fee for Microsoft's Program Guide (the EPG service for certain non-Media Center PVRs), rejoice! The software giant recently announced that the MSPG service will henceforth be offered gratis -- and hey, Microsoft is even doing the "responsible" thing and implementing a refund program for anyone who's bought a pre-paid Fast-Card or lifetime sub for the service. The cost of the Program Guide had already been kind of a slap in the face to owners of LG's LRM-519 PVR/media extender, for example, whose $600 MSRP could just have easily been spent on a Windows MCE machine with a free content guide. So if you were on the fence about a LRM-519, be on said fence no more, friend.
