Dueling PlayStation 3s, 60GB vs 20GB
Speaking of the PlayStation 3s, it looks like we've got some simple, yet tasteful aesthetic differences to coincide with those happier specs on the 60GB / HDMI / WiFi / super-duper $600 unit. Ok, so besides the arrangement of ports on the rear, its mostly it's just a dash of classy silver. We wish there was something more to show (ok, so there are a few more images after the break), but we all know what really counts is on the inside.

you know, from that straight-on view, the ps3 kinda reminds me of seattle's columbia center.
that is ugly as sin
Is it wrong to much prefer the matte look?
Wonder how loud this thing will be? my ps2 sounds like a freight train when compared with the htpc :)
Worst design ever. Sure, the curved top guarantees it gets to the top of your home entertainment stack but you can't even balance a game case on top. Stupid Stupid Stupid...
Can I get one in a more square kinda box so that it fits with the rest of my gear... discreet and functional like a dvd player rather than a whirlitzer. Im 35, not 15... but I still want one
Sure hope that Engadget gets its spam filters working again. This Hairymaje link is showing up in all the articles. Enough with it.
The one with the silver reminds me of Spiderman. But I still think they look great, although not very ergonomic.
Usually, everything Sony makes is elegant - why does this look like shit?
when did this site become linkshare?
no one cares about your blogs...
stop posting links to them
Dammit! The budget all-black one looks so much nicer!
Looks like the Turbo Duo.
simple and classy...I like it. It's going on its shelf so what do I care if it has a rounded top?
plain black one looks a hell of a lot better than that silver one
Do you reckon the box design is causing the production delays? Maybe the cell processor stuff is just a side issue?
Oh sweet, links to peoples useless blogs. that's awesome! thanks guys!!!
I think this is almost the ugliest console I've ever seen. The silver makes it even uglier!
It is ugly from the front. Did anyone honestly think the ps2 was great looking? It was not even on the side where the drive was and the ps3 is even worse. And it is huge, at leas the 360 has the power supply outside so it can be hidden behind the tv
Who cares how it looks? the xbox wasn't a looker, but it woked. Plus with wireless- pretty much everything you can shove it out of the way the same as the 360. As long as what's inside works, I couldn't give a pair of fetid dingo's kidneys about the case it's in.
Luv it or hate it. Infact think its not bad at all and to say that u'll stack it on top of the rest of the home theatre just stand it up verticially. *der...*
So buy it or not, complement or shutupayaface!
those are some mean looking vents, i wonder if they decided to put the power supply inside or not.
If I had any interest in buying one of these, you could count me in the 'rounded top for teh lose' club.
That's a terribly egocentric design flaw on Sony's part. Who are they to think they deserve an unadulterated spot at the top of the shelf? (Oh yeah, the same assholes who think they can install software on my computer without telling me)
Standing, it looks like a skyscraper with windows et al.
This thing looks good in photos - better than the fugly Xbox.
But in the flesh... that's a big damned box to be throwing curves like that around. Stupidly unstackable.
this is sort of a random comment - but doe the logo orientation change according to how you have your PS3 standing up? lol, look how they changed the logo on the front depending how it was standing. which way is it actually facing?
ladies and gentlemen...now introducing the george foreman grill that plays games and blu-ray!!!11!!
So which model is which? I think everyone will be pleasently surprise when it's released. This console will be impossible to get on launch day.
Looks fine to me. It should fit nice right on top of the DVD player now that it has wireless. I always hated setting the PS2 on the coffee table to play so the cords could reach and didn't care much for the wireless controllers on the market.
When I eventually do buy one, I might run over the "chrome" pieces a bit with some super fine grit sand paper to dull it a bit, but then again, I'm one of them crazy people that think chrome rims are gaudy and prefer a nice satin finish. Before you comment, I would do this as others have modded XBoxes and Nintendo consoles. So before you even start on a rant of "you should buy it and like it" look your way first.
Overall though, doesn't look bad, but it would have been nice to see it in a "stackable" format.
Hey! It looks quite nice from the front on view, still not a fan of the wonky side on view shape though.
Just can't wait for the launch to see how it stacks up!
Sony whinges at MS for releasing two versions of its' console... then they go ahead and copy them by doing two different versions of the PS3... then they go copy the 'chrome' highlights of the more expensive 360 for their more expensive PS3 version! Hilarious.
First of all, if your going to spend $500 to $600 on a system, why would you want to stack it! It would be better to keep it in a vented area so you can get the longest lifespan out of your PS3. Also, if you really hate the design that much, just wait for the PSthree. Like the PS1, they redesigned and made it smaller and got the PSone. Same for the PS2, it got redesigned and made slimmer and you got the PStwo. Now I assume that Sony will follow suit and redesign the PS3 and eventually come out with a PSthree.
anyone else realize that stacking other electronics on top of your game console in an inclosed shelf (like most entertainment centers) just might add to the overheating and problems so many people complain about with their shiny new consoles?
the 360 is is only slightly larger than 10x12 and has a concave curve on each side and the original xbox was square and had a curved top... not that great for stacking.
genesis, dreamcast, the nes, n64, gamecube, super nintendo, atari jaguar and back to the atari 2600... all these consoles were top loading or curved on top and completely unstackable.
so why are you guys saying that sony is a bunch of egocentric assholes who have designed a non-standard console in order to insure that it must be stacked on top of your other electronics.
is it because they're the only company to have ever built a stackable console with the ps2?
answer for jesse perry
the PS logo rotates on the PS2 so you can turn it however you like. i'm assuming that's the same on the PS3
you realize the "silver" is light reflecting off the black box - damn, some people are dumb
It will be interesting to see how it's received by Japanese consumers. The original Xbox was openly ridiculed by the Japanese public and press due to it's gargantuan size when compared to the PS2.
The PS3 looks huge next to the 360.
Personally, if I'm going to fork out 600 bucks for one of these things
(and I'm not, because I'm a college student with debts... BOoo)
Then I would think I would also be willing to fork out a couple more bucks, and by an HTPC case for all the inards... For goodness sakes, not only would it look "cleaner," but you could also get a couple more fans in there (presumably more lower power fans = quieter fans)
Because we all know that thing is going to produce 90db of background noise (slight exaggeration).
Got Root?
No media center extension built in

Random thought....
People were saying how the lower end model won't have wireless controllers but then that was refuted. Does anyone notice the little symbol above all the USB ports when the premium console is standing up? It looks just like the symbol on the 360's controller.
Now notice it's missing from the lower end model. I wonder if that means something, or if I'm just completely wrong
Mike has a point the PS3 is BIG compared to the 360, But shockingly the 360 isn't htat much smaller than the 360. Could be very intresting to see the outcome.
or even *that much* sorry :)
is it just me or does the ps3 look like a bread-bin
Re: Erick
Well, people have oppinions. Its not a functional design. Its not that great looking so...Piss off.
"is it because they're the only company to have ever built a stackable console with the ps2?"
huh? the 1st xbox is stackable. i don't have a 360 so i dont know how well it stacks, but it looks like it would stack okay from the demo models i have seen in stores.
personally if a console (or any device) is toploading i dont mind it being not stackable, because the lack of a motorized tray = one les sthing to break. but if you have a front loader, make it stackable.
that said, that quibble wouldn't effect my purchasing decision
note that they removed the "touch sensitive" buttons and replaced them with real buttons. this time, they're silver. and they added two power lights.

My PS2 has its own shelf. The only thing I have stacked is my DVD player ontop of my surround receiver. My Tivo has its own shelf as well. Keeps everything neat and cool.
As for the PS3...I hate slot feed drives.
I don't think I'm actually going to buy a PS3 when it comes out and unless they have a host of games I want to play, then I probably won't buy one ever. I switched back to PC games a couple years ago and have bought maybe 2 PS2 games in the past 4 years. I've rented a couple and plan on renting a couple more, but console gaming isn't really worth much to me at the present time.
I bought an upconverting DVD player and without having an HDTV there's no reason for me to buy a console that plays High Definition movies. I have no need for Blueray either. I wish Sony would concentrate more on the basics and less time on trying to jam as much stuff as they can into a console. Look at some of the high end supercars...they're nothing more than a seat strapped to an engine and some wheels. No frills, no bells, no whistles....just all machine.
I guess I'll have to get some black tape and cover the silver parts.. The all black one looks much better.. I guess really I hope that the better one comes in all black...
For the price this thing better rock or Sony will have a flop on their hands.
Hmm, does the PS logo realy rotate acording to the orientation of the unit or is it just some Photoshop fake?
I like the slick power and eject "buttons", that seem to be touch sensitve and not mechanical.
Looks nice, but it's a Sony product, so the software will suck. Too bad.
Simon:
The PS2's logo could be rotated, so it would not surprise me if the PS3's could be rotated as well.
Slot loading drive is the one and only feature I love about PS3 design. 360's chrome tray loading drive sucks.
