Video iPod banner for September 12th?
Last time we saw a banner shown at an Apple event was, well, last month for the WWDC 2006 extravaganza. But this banner, supposedly taken at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco for the event intended this Tuesday the 12th, pretty clearly depicts what appears to be the touchscreen (true) video iPod -- that is, if it's real. Of course, we can confirm nor deny anything, but obviously the churning machine that is the Apple rumor mill right now should not be discounted, friends. Two days until we all find out!

fake. the imac extends from the banner, and it has photoshopped marks on it. lighting is inconsistant etc...
Penn @ Sep 10th 2006 11:48PM
is there a reason that people that want us to believe these images can never use a decent digital camera....or have a camera phone that actually can focus at resonable distances?
waffles @ Sep 11th 2006 12:56AM
hmm, I own a t-mobile mda vario, an ipod 5g and a psp...and not ONCE have i watched a movie on any of the devices...the 20 movies i have on the ipod just waste my space, and, yes i have a gig stick for the pda and psp...i really don't think many people are gonna like this, even if it's true.
maximilian @ Sep 11th 2006 12:44AM
i just want to know why it looks like it has an imovie icon in the background of the fakepod.
Travis @ Sep 10th 2006 11:50PM
Does anyone know what the fifth thing is in the front row look alike? thanks.
uclatommy @ Sep 10th 2006 11:51PM
I call shenanigans on this one. The lighting in the room looks very non-homogenous, but the banner looks to be evenly lit. You would think some parts of the banner would be dark and others would be lit.
morty salt @ Sep 10th 2006 11:52PM
that thing is HUGE!!! that's like the 40" plasma video ipod
z @ Sep 10th 2006 11:52PM
Fake perspective, bad photoshoping, fake graphic design and cheap slogan: fake evidence...
andy @ Sep 10th 2006 11:53PM
front row and dvd icons on an ipod? me thinks not!
kyle Garchar @ Sep 10th 2006 11:58PM
that fifth thing is not a fifth thing, its a virtual scroll wheel
Superphreeq @ Sep 10th 2006 11:58PM
@travis
The fifth thing you are seeing is actually part of the virtual click wheel. If you look closely you can see little white words to the top and on either side, just like on a real iPod. I call fake because the banner looks like its backlit or something. That and vectorbug is right...the imac def extends beyond the bounds of the banner.
w!sh @ Sep 11th 2006 12:02AM
oh yeah
it's for reals
i know because my brother's fiance's roommate's boyfriend just got a job with the banner hanging division of apple special events
the event is in like, what, 37 hours? granted i'm totally an apple fanboy, but damn, relax already
engadget - "look at this real-or-not apple thing!"
post group A - "fake! lookie at the photoshop thingys!"
post group B - "shut up, it's real! just a crappy pic"
post group C - "both of you shut up, its almost tuesday"
the B's are my favorite ;)
Lester Nelson @ Sep 12th 2006 12:08PM
I call fake for the simple reason that the apple logo and the phrase "the stars" aren't in any way the same perspective as the banner itself. If you were to look at this banner straight on, the phrase would be crooked, and the apple logo would be rubbing the left border of the banner, while still having plenty of space above it.
Lester Nelson @ Sep 11th 2006 12:05AM
Also, since when does Apple not capitalize the first letter in a phrase? (aside from when the first word is iPod or iMac, obviously)
Dan L @ Sep 11th 2006 12:10AM
I agree with whoever bagged on color/lighting consistency. that white on the banner is DAMN white in comparison to.....everything else that looks to be white in that room. that apple logo is bright as hell.
JeremytheIndian @ Sep 11th 2006 12:12AM
I say real just because that's what I am hoping for...
alex @ Sep 11th 2006 12:20AM
the apple logo is off center
Aesahaettr @ Sep 11th 2006 1:29PM
Here's what you do: right click the picture above and open it by itself in a new window. Then view the page source for the picture. What's the first bit of discernable text there? Boom. Photoshop 3.0
Maggie @ Sep 11th 2006 11:18AM
FAKE
Forget lighting, what, it's got room for a dvd player? It looks like someone took the icons from front row, and didn't think to REPLACE the dvd icon with the scroll wheel. Why would you need a DVD icon on a handheld that isn't even the width of a dvd? Whoopsie.
cubs-bears-bulls-rule-4life @ Sep 11th 2006 12:29AM
i just hope the new ipod comes out before christmas so i can get if not i'll get a zune, gigabeat v,or zen vision. i'd rather have a ipod cuz of accesories
vitaminbmeister @ Sep 11th 2006 12:27AM
I think jobs is going to pull it out of his back pocket during the "showtime".
Miranda Kali @ Sep 11th 2006 11:25AM
Yes, yes...that's it. The single largest company for pre-event speculation is going to place banners larger than Andre the Giant's corpse, higgly-piggly around a convention center that is accessed by hundreds of people, two days in advance of an annoucement, even though such banners would take less than an hour to hang.
I've seen Apple make some stupid moves, but not that stupid. It takes a greater leap of faith to beleive that there are some who would hold this rumor to be true than to beleive it's validity.
...oh, and I could leap the void with such a faith in fools..
Peter @ Sep 11th 2006 12:29AM
Assuming, for one second, that the banner is real... the vPod has no dock or cables... could this be an indication of Bluetooth docking ???
John Pastor @ Sep 11th 2006 12:33AM
The building that this banner is in, is not the Yerba Buena Theatre, it's the Moscone Center.

Andy S. @ Sep 11th 2006 12:36AM
Okay, I'll grant that it's probably a fake. But travel with me into the realm of imagination, where that banner is real…
The iPod has Front Row on it, aye? This iPod is rumored at having Bluetooth, right? Could it be that this could function as a "remote control" for an iMac? Not just controlling Front Row, but beyond?! Could you stream DVDs from your iMac to your iPod while you're on the Jon?
The possibilities are endless!
But it's probably fake.
Peter @ Sep 11th 2006 12:37AM
any possibility it's not a banner and instead it's being projected? im sure there will be an overwhelming "of course not," but none the less i thought i'd present the idea
James @ Sep 11th 2006 12:41AM
Anyone else notice a coincidence with this event and the fact that the rebate on iPods through Apple's student program end in the same week? Wouldn't shock me to find that it's because of the video iPod.
Eric @ Sep 11th 2006 1:05AM
There is no sign of a desktop background. No caps on the slogan. Apple logo is far too bright. iPod has reflection and iMac does not.
cubs-bears-bulls-rule-4life @ Sep 11th 2006 12:49AM
does anyone know what time the apple show is on tues
Jake @ Sep 11th 2006 12:55AM
For the love of baby Steve, please stop! All of these rumor pictures you put up are so so obviously fake. The entertainment of speculative Apple design and debunkery has long since worn off. Please stick to real stuff! Or failing that, at least real vaporware. Thank you.
Bart Lee @ Sep 11th 2006 12:57AM
Wow that's some sloppy Photoshoppin. I wish you fakers would at least use Myriad. It freakin comes with Illustrator, you know.
toodaloo @ Sep 11th 2006 12:55AM
It's fake because the Yerba Bueana Center uses Philips halogen lighting and that is SO OBVIOUSLY GE incandescent.
Plus, you can tell whoever hung up the original banner had El Pollo Loco for dinner. The jig is up! There is no El Pollo Loco in San Francisco!
(okay, now I'm parodying myself, I'm lame).
Evil Monkey NZ @ Sep 11th 2006 11:03PM
It's Real.
All your supposed "evidence" that it's fake, is easily explained away by Magic.
Steve Jobs is Magic.
End Of Story.

KenjiFinster @ Sep 11th 2006 2:23AM
Fake. One simple detail: The font of the "the stars" text is not Myriad, and I can tell (I work with Myriad everyday)

Video iPod WOOOOOOO!!!

Darrel @ Sep 11th 2006 2:42AM
I dont know... considering the rumor regarding the release of movies via itunes, it very well could be a new video ipod taking full advantage of a wide screen format in your hands.
Michael @ Sep 11th 2006 4:01AM
it looks like the iPod runs Front Row, also looks like it has a touch screen.
theappletruth @ Sep 11th 2006 3:19AM
It's a fake, I know this because I took the original. An apple rep told me to delete the pic after I snapped it with my phone, but I managed to send it to my bro first.

edru @ Sep 11th 2006 2:21PM
So I zoom in on this image in photoshop and what do i notice.. the screen on teh "ipod" isnt centered correctly within the white border, the screen is slightly scewed compared to the white border, the corners of the screen are perfectly square as if pasted on top of old ipod image, the top right corner of the banner is perfectly square as if edited or added.
Why is there some sort of stand under the 'ipod'?
why is the interface just god awful ugly - from what can at least be made out - the thing is damn tiny. There is an iTunes icon on the screen.. the ipod has never used icons, im not saying this can change, but its always been text based.
Why would they make the iMac HUGE HUGE HUGE and the LONG LONG LONG awaited iPod so so so so small?
the apple is damn near haning off the banner is so damn close to the edge
yeah im bored and had nothing to do.
edru @ Sep 11th 2006 2:22PM
why wouldnt the front row icons be centered on the "full screen" with an opaque click wheel than crammed on the left?
Robin @ Sep 11th 2006 3:36AM
Obvious fake. I've even got proof :-)
http://blog.wired.com/iphone/index.album?i=8
Doesnt it look all too familiar?
Jeff @ Sep 11th 2006 6:54AM
The world would be a better place if Adobe had never invented Photoshop.
Keaton @ Sep 11th 2006 6:57AM
OMG!
its so obviously a fake. The first dude who posted, about sums it up.... I mean the iMac is hanging off the banner... (like blatantly) and the banner is so clear in comparison to the rest of the shot...
anyways on a different note, If Apple was smart at all they would come out with a touchscreen video iPod. Its what we all want, right?
One last thing... Give credit where credit is due. For once would someone acknowledge the one and only father of the iPod!!! I bet ALL you iPod fanatics don't even know he is... Long live Tony Fadell!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Fadell

Tom Boucher @ Sep 11th 2006 9:29AM
Why is it when anyone takes a 'spy' picture it's been put through the ringer? Even the crappiest camera phone or the crappiest digital camera can take a sharp picture. but all the fakes look like the picture was taken through a sheet of saran wrap.
Andrew Eller @ Sep 11th 2006 9:32AM
Since WHEN, in the last three years, has Apple ever left a banner featuring unreleased products uncovered? The answer.....never. If this was a real pic, all we would be able to see is a black cloth over a banner.

It's NOT the video iPod. I wish it were. Our 4G just failed yesterday, and I have the dilemma of waiting for something better or just getting a 5G now. Of course I'll wait until after Tuesday, but I'm 99% sure the true video iPod will be next year, not tomorrow. The recent announcements by parts suppliers make it clear that the thing just isn't ready yet. NVidia JUST announced a few weeks ago that they are supplying chips.
Sorry, keep dreaming.
dboto @ Sep 11th 2006 10:36AM
fake
Sushi Boi @ Sep 11th 2006 10:51AM
what if its not a ipod but actually a new genetarion of apple monitors?
MacGeekGuy @ Sep 11th 2006 11:55AM
One quick thing I noticed is that the Apple is all wrong. Apple would not screw up their own logo. The Apple in the poster is what you get from doing a cmd-shift-k with a standard font like Palatino. The humps on the lower portion and right portion (that cut into the Apple) are too shallow. Clearly a fake... and they didn't even bother to get the right logo for it. Nice try though. :)
