PSP firmware hits 3.30, with bigger vids and better PSone
We were never ones to stand in the way of excessive format support, and never ones to accuse Sony of such a deed, but it appears they're feeling generous this week, with the brand new range of 720 x 480, 352 x 480 and 480 x 272 playback resolutions of MPEG-4 AVA (H.264) video that can be yours with the new 3.30 firmware update. The update also improves PSone performance with a menu option to increase disk dreading speed in exchange for better load times and a little bit of instability. Finally, Sony is tossing in thumbnail support for video and RSS feeds, another welcome improvement. Not bad at all for a 0.1 update, but we're still holding out for PS3-free PSone downloads.

why would Sony gives out FREE PS1 games when SNES games are sold for 6-10 bucks?? and I was thinking that Endadget would have one post without any bashing or backhanded compliments.
at 480P, it's Wii quality. Nice, and can't go wrong with better PS1 support. I love my FFVIII on it. I will wait for Dark_alex... you know who you are.. time to get working.

They're not talking about free PSOne downloads. They're talking about PSOne downloads that can be downloaded directly to the PSP without having to use the PS3.

lmao
kingofwale @ Mar 28th 2007 1:15PM
oops, I think I mis-read
yeah, but you really don't have to need a PS3... just get a copy of the PS1 Disc and rip it yourself (questionable legally by SOny, but if you own the game, who cares)

Wish I had a PSP...

Help me out hear guys...does this update now play ripped vids at the PSP's full resolution?
Ben_s214 @ Mar 28th 2007 9:31PM
Original versions
Best video size for PSP = 368 x 208 (Full Screen)
Now you have 720 x 480, 352 x 480 and 480 x 272 p

ripping DVD is illegal, so, I guess it's not designed for you to do that. *wink wink* but whereever you got your format in 720*480. yes, you can convert and watch it on your PSP
Ben_s214 @ Mar 28th 2007 1:56PM
Ripping your own DVD is still LEGAL in many countries and I enjoy watching movies and music videos on PSP during commute.
PSP has a gorgeous screen and that is why I pick it up instead of DSL. In fact, watching videos on PSP is much more enjoyable than my 5G ipod.
paralipsis @ Mar 28th 2007 1:48PM
What's the use of having support for videos exceeding the maximum resolution on the PSP? It doesn't have any output to another display, and you probably have to transcode anyway to meet the other format restrictions of the PSP. Still, it's about time they supported 480x272.
cduran01 @ Mar 28th 2007 2:59PM
Thats an easy answer....A video at 720 x 480 can be viewed on a TV at full screen with a pretty good picture, now lets say you want to take it to go on your PSP, now you can without having to encode another version just for your PSP. Get it?

Someone please tell me where I can get info on converting my PSP so that I can run homebrew games or other *wink*wink* games if you know what I mean.
Ayle @ Mar 28th 2007 2:41PM
....This is the kind of thing which give a bad image to the homebrew scene but well who am I to judge.... http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=48 ... just avoid talking openly about playing isos....

There are a lot of forum that talks about it. try google it. of course, you will have to 'downgrade' and the 'upgrade' to custom firmware.
just make sure your homebrew games are really homebrewed. *wink wink*
digitalh @ Mar 28th 2007 2:51PM
Okay. Help me out here: Where exactly is the 3.30 firmware available? I don't see it on the PSP site. I am very interested, not being a home brewer...
dave @ Mar 28th 2007 3:00PM
its only availabe via wifi right now...
got 480x272 working, but not 720x480, gonna test some more :)

So it will now play 720 x 480, 352 x 480 and 480 x 272 p
BUT... Will it downscale it to the crippled 368 x 208 or show it in 480 x 272 p. (full screen res)
Just because it plays a higher resolution, it does not mean it shows it in that resolution. I am interested to hear this answer.
pyro @ Mar 28th 2007 3:17PM
so how many hours till this FW is cracked?
dave @ Mar 28th 2007 3:19PM
i use megui using x264 :) isnt the point to get files for the ps3 that will also play on the psp, so you dont need to make different versions. I "think" there might be other changes in this firmware to bring it inline with the ps3, but this will need more testing...

I never fly w/out my PSP. Too bad the memory sticks are so damn small yet so expensive.
Ben_s214 @ Mar 28th 2007 9:35PM
4GB MS Duo is much cheaper now and I get from local Sony shop at around USD78.50
dave @ Mar 28th 2007 4:44PM
oh yep, this was more thinking that your SD rips could potentially play on both systems without modification :) like the ipod, the quality is good enough when you hook it up to a TV, the psp res limited files would look no better than VHS when played through the ps3.
James @ Mar 28th 2007 4:52PM
It does actually play the 480x272 videos in full resolution.
But then, we've had this since the 3.xx OE firmwares provided by the PSP community :)
The ability to play 720x480 video is pointless, IMO.
MrWhite @ Mar 28th 2007 5:21PM
Using a program called iSquint I was able to get full length movies at 320x240 down to 250MB each. The picture quality is decent for the PSP. I got 3 movies on a 1GB card.

Thats crazy, I read about the upgrade to 3.30 this morning I went right to the website to get the upgrade. And it was there, but now its not.
Nick Gold @ Mar 28th 2007 10:10PM
What is MPEG-4 AVA? H.264 is also known as AVC... article should be corrected...

Hello..I have a psps with 3.30. I truly am lost at this point. What do I have to do to play video's on a psp? I have PSP Video 9, I have created a VIDEO dir in in both MP_ROOT and PSP. The thing simply wont pick up the converted files. HELP!!! Anyone have any ideas? (Note, this psp is not hacked in any way. The file I am trying to play, as best I can tell, is ACV compliant after it's conversion). Am I not placing the file in the right dir??

I recommend the Jodix Free MP4 Converter. available at www.jodix.com.
And if your interested, there's also an mp3 converter there aswell xD
gigh @ Apr 3rd 2007 2:21PM
Large video is fantastic - though the support for it has been available since 2.80 - what we're all waiting for in South Africa is the flash 9.0 player to be released using the psp's graphic accelerator to render - then the game-development world will explode!
