Props man, props.
Eh... looking in the *dictionary* (you know... official definitions of words) rather than assuming (which is what you're doing), I see that an acronym is "a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words, as Wac from Women's Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation."
MG is *not* a word, therefore it is *not* an acronym. Neither are those other things that you put forth. Just because *many* people are wrong in making those assumptions, doesn't make you any more right.
Away with thee, troll. I banish thee to the bridge under which thou were sired.
sony playing catch-up to apple? their MP3 players sound quality is the best, according to CNET, and the NWZ players are always editors' picks. Apple stuff is cool too, but as far as design they're OK if you're a teenage girl and you don't mind putting sanrio-looking crap in your front pocket. At least Sony stuff looks industrial-chic, not girl-chic. So what's with the Sony-bashing? They make good stuff--if you think Apple makes better MP3 players, are they so much better as to justify their market position? Be honest. It's all about marketing. Just like Microsoft dominates operating systems, even though Apple is probably better--Apple just didn't do what they needed to do, at the outset, to get market share, so now they're still a fraction of personal computers. But this doesn't mean that Apples suck. Likewise, just because Apple dominates the market in MP3's doesn't mean Sony and iRiver and Sansa suck.
i love that they even threw an apple logo on the box. i mean why not, right?
I'd buy 50 of these for x-mas gifts on principle alone.
I'd buy one just for novelty factor.
Wrong - they do. http://crunchgear.com/2006/09/15/the-microsoft-zune-has-a-chinese-knockoff-already/
Funny that no one tries to make a fake zune!
I always wonder, how can retailers be so easily fooled by this kind of crap!
Y'know, I'm gonna take a punt and say that these aren't a Sony product at all... Ie, someone's ripping off both Sony and Apple.
Chris C - ya think?
"This is offensive to both Christians and prunes"
Good call Chris C. They almost had me fooled!
Those darn folks at Sony sure tried to pull a fast one on us! Trying to cash in a piece of Apple's pie, I see. Not so fast!
Um, are you fucking stupid? This isn't a Sony product. It's someone ripping off both Sony AND Apple. It's a dead giveaway when there was obviously no thought put into designing the product, and also, the font used on the device is not the real Sony logo.
These are obvious, but I have seen a lot of fake Sony earphones floating around - they are a lot harder to tell the difference until they are in your ears.
I redirect your initial question to you, Mr. Takeeverythingseriously.
Hey man, way to sense the sarcasm
haha Captain Obvious reads engadget too?
Glad to see it passed the FCC regulations
shit,if the click wheel works and the screen is good i'll take one
MP3 PLAY!!!!
wow - cool - memorystick support!
AWESOME iPod killer!!!
Hey...what does the MG bellow the memory stick magic gate logo stands for?
Are you fucking stupid? MG is an acronym for MagicGate, an encryption technology from Sony.
I guess you didn't read the comment correctly right?
myscrnnm, are you fucking stupid? that's not an acronym, it's an abreviation. Acronyms are words created from abbreviations. MG isn't a word.
We prefer fakes to be without any garish labels whatsoever...and for $40 its a steal!!

but i prefer this one...

Nothing says quality like a holographic 1gb sticker....man I wish I had that....I cant wait until the "sony mix-it up" comes out....
hmm... about the whole "you're a retard stop posting" thing...
yeah....
wow that quick remark was only about 3 months late, way to keep the quality on posting.
yeah...
Wow, myscrnnm sure doesn't recognize sarcasm when he reads it.
myscrnnm - I think you need to tone it down - Asking what MG stands is an honest question, I myself - who I'm proud to say knows most acronyms out there didn't have a clue.
No one wants your insluts or your language. Please troll elsewhere.
We get so many of these on trademe (new zealand ebay site), they're like the only ones you can get. They all claim to be Ipod nanos when they clearly aren't. My brother actually bought one and it was total crap.
"myscrnnm, are you fucking stupid? that's not an acronym, it's an abreviation. Acronyms are words created from abbreviations. MG isn't a word."
I think the question should be, "rAe YOU fucking stupid?" MG is an acronym because it takes the first letters of the words to create MG. An abbreviation is like abbr, where you shorten the word. Screw you.
"I think the question should be, "rAe YOU fucking stupid?" MG is an acronym because it takes the first letters of the words to create MG. An abbreviation is like abbr, where you shorten the word. Screw you."
Simply put: WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
that "sony nano" maybe was made in a sector of china without license
Furthermore, the Sony device is superior to Apples.
no SonicStage. I'm sold! ;)
wow!
look all the labels on that thing!
gotta love that golden Apple logo...
"myscrnnm" has inspired me to preface every reply I make to a comment on Engadget with "are you fucking stupid?". Thank you, good sir.
...or AYFS for short. Had that thought a second after I posted.
this is just sad
Does anyone know if the screens support more than 262K colors?
Wow, that's even better. rAe YOU fucking stupid?! No idea who this "rAe" fella is though. Everybody Loves rAemond?
Actually, no. Both MG and Abbr. are abbreviations. An acronym is pronounceable as a word. For example, NASA and NIMBY are acronyms. USB and CIA are not.
"Wow, that's even better. rAe YOU fucking stupid?! No idea who this "rAe" fella is though. Everybody Loves rAemond?"
Apparently the word "typo" is not in your vocabulary.
In keeping with myscrnnm and posting useless crap that no one cares about I will say this about the acronym thing.
"Initialism originally described abbreviations formed from initials, without reference to pronunciation; but, during the mid 20th century, when such abbreviations saw more use than ever before, the word acronym was coined for abbreviations pronounced as words, such as NATO and AIDS." Wikipedia
So in short myscrnnm YOU ARE WRONG, case in point people write their initials on stuff but not their acronym. Unless you are like me and your initials do form a word, in my case PRO. Anyway it should have been asked "what do the initials MG stand for"
I came for the fake products, stayed for the English lesson.
"Eh... looking in the *dictionary* (you know... official definitions of words) rather than assuming (which is what you're doing), I see that an acronym is "a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words, as Wac from Women's Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation.""
I don't know what language dictionary your using as a resource, but it's obviously not one of the English language. The Webster dictionary (second in definitivity only to the Oxford English Dictionary) defines the word "acronym" as:
a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters
Emphasis on the second definition. I'm right, end of discussion.
