Samsung's 64GB SSDs: ready to roll
For all the 64GB SSDs announced, only one manufacturer has the skillz to bring them to market: Samsung. Starting today, Sammy is mass producing the world's first 64GB, 1.8-inch SSD. Right, the ideal size for UMPCs and super slim ultra-portables. No word on price but it's not like you'll find these up for retail anyway. We expect 'em to go OEM-only baby as $1,000 (at least) premiums inside your latest VAIO, Latitude, Lifebook, and Sammy's own Q40 and Q1 Ultra machines to name a few. Apple too, if there's any life to that ultra-portable rumor.

$1000? Puh-leeze. Unless you drive a tank for a living, who could justify dropping so much on a measly (paltry?) 64 gb SSD?
$300 premium? Maybe. $1000? Not unless you run the law firm.
If these go for even $300, someone needs to get their head checked. I know its all trendy and cool to sap early adopters of their cash, but come on. Why not grab the lions share of the market with a high quality, low priced, SSD? Same thing with CPU's... AMD is going to get their ass handed to them because they are competing with a company [intel] with massive economies of scale. You can't beat them that way, so innovate beyond their greedy reach [by dropping a CPU that is 8Ghz]. Tired of this drip drip drip drip drip of technology, we should be jacking into the matrix right now instead of using a frick'n keyboard. INNOVATE DAMNIT!
They have to quickly re-coup their initial investment of RD & building (or re-tooling of) fabrication plants before the market is saturatrated with these and forces a price drop. How do you propose they do that if they don't charge a premium upfront? They will come down in price eventually, I guess-itmate that in about 2-3 years they will be priced similarly to the current hd's of similar capacity.
"Quickly" is not necessarily true, technology has a lifespan, early adoption reclaims a portion of that amount, all of it is amortized over the lifetime of the product/project and profit and loss is accounted for even during the R&D stages. Regardless, we as consumers drool over a trickling down of technology as if 500Mhz should be something we give our testicles for.
For as much as I think competition breeds development, it also, when kept in check, stifle rapid deployment. No one will release a mind-blowing technology if they know their consumers have something just barely better than the previous model. Only in certain aspects [record breaking for instance] do people work very hard to get very far ahead to make it impossible/improbable to beat them.
We need the Olympics of Technology.
...I would love to drop this into my iaudio X5...
Why complain about the price when you can't even buy it yet?
Samsung's 64GB SSDs: ready to roll BACK TO WHERE IT CAME FROM!!!
$1000!! Thats just absolutely ridiculous...Come forth Sebastian! AIM...@&*%! @&*%!
PS: Sebastian is the name of my shotgun ^_^
$1000? Now we know why all the manufacturers of these things were reluctant to publish hard prices..would have slightly killed the ZOMG 128GB SSD WE ROXORZ hype.
Cut the price by a factor of 5 and they become perfect, but by then, HDD space will be even more for less, so I think we'll end up with laptops that have a 32/64gb SSD for apps/OS etc, plus a 100gb+ hard disk for files and media. At least that's a step in the right direction I suppose...
Oh, and seeing the price on these things kills any hope I had for a reasonably priced 32/64gb SSD ipod anytime soon. Maybe in 18 months
does this mean i'll be able to buy a 64gb - $1500 iphone soon?
Based on the picture, is this an ATA 133? If it is, where does the power come in? Wouldn't it be better to be a SATA drive?
Didn't you know? It's an SSD, they don't need power anymore!
Its PATA and there is no need for an extra connector...
When was the last time you saw a laptop hard drive that needed an external power connector? Been livin' under a rock lately?
Uh.. guys? The last price I saw before this was $25 per GB. This was in February I think. The price has now been cut down to less than $16 per GB. That's an improvement to me. If the price continues to drop at this rate, by October you'll get a 32GB drive for $320. And by February 2008 for $210. So quit whining!
I was really looking forward to whining about it until then, but as you wish.
Great. Replace the spinning drive on the Mercedes S550 with one of these babies and all will be good.
Hope they come out with a 200GB 2.5" version soon. Will spend $1000 if that is available.
to whoever complaint about the price, just go away. these hd is not for your desktop replacement laptop to listen music and watch porno everyday. they are meant for ppl who need a reliable hard drive to handle and perform in hard condition. until u guys depend on your ultra portable laptop and the data inside your laptop for living, you guys dont need one of these.
Can these replace existing 1.8 inch HDDs in existing hardware?
Just wondering since I already have a laptop with a 60GB 1.8 inch HDD...
Hey what do you know? 64GB would be an upgrade for me :P
Just so you know... Normal 1.8 inch HDDs aren't all that cheap compared to 2.5 inch brothers anyway... same goes to microDIMMs
Waaaahhh. All of you whiny little girls complaining about the price are probably the same people that complained when DVD burners first came out, and ate your words a few months later when the prices dropped. Stop complaining, and get a clue on how technology prices work.
For fuck's sake shut up about the price, every page in this site is the same god damn thing. They tell us about some ground breaking technology, and all you people do is whine. You want a deal on something? Here: www.k-mart.com
So..a 64 GB flash drive for the much-rumored mac sub-portable. Does anyone else think that by the next MacWorld, prices will have come don enough that a reasonable price point for that kind of machine is possible? I mean, adding coverflow to OS X only really makes sense if there's a multi-touch interface coming to the Mac line right? Maybe a 24" iMac touchscreen, but an ultra-portable/convertible tablet would seem to make a lot of sense.
Relax people. Prize is gonna drop like crazy. Look what happened to sd cards
*price not prize
I support completely the SSDs, but $1000 for one...I'd prefer another notebook.
yep, quite good, i saw this on sale on www.dealunion.com. very useful
It may be expensive now, but as those of you who are techies will know that the price will drop! Like it or not whiners this is the future of storage technology and in a few years time mechanical Hard Drives will be phased out in favour of Solid State storage! The advantage of Solid State devices being they have no moving parts to wear out and no eletric motors to spin drive platters to suck battery power! I've read that with these new drives you can see an extra 30 minutes out of a laptop battery and It's only going to get better! So instead of whining about price which will inevitably decrease as demand increases, think about how this technology will change the future making for more reliable, more efficient and eventually more cost effective storage solutions where low power consumption is required, especially in laptops!
