Oh yes they are folks, ringtone icons snatched straight from the newly launched
iTunes 7.3 resource folder. First noticed by reader
Michael (and confirmed by us) in the comments -- nice work, bro. So what could the little guys be doing there, after all, there isn't a
Ringtones tab in any of the iPhone how-to guides unlike the slide presented
at WWDC? Don't know, but let's hope they'll sit next little MP3/AAC ringtones we create ourselves for free and not just the ones we download from the iTunes store for a fee, eh?

Yeah that was pretty lame. Let the joke be, don't try and add to it.
david @ Jun 29th 2007 1:11PM
My bad.
paloooz @ Jun 29th 2007 2:31PM
Now I feel bad for saying that. :-(
michaelleung1992 @ Jun 29th 2007 12:02PM
Wow, but I think it still can't use our own ringtone instead of the ringtones which are built-in in the iPhone.

They should also let us download everything from iTunes for free, not to mentions give us iPhones for free. Sprint is already giving away their ringtones for free, so should Apple.
Tom @ Jun 29th 2007 3:30PM
Ah, I see your world runs on happiness and sunshine. How's the rent out there?
Michael @ Jun 29th 2007 12:06PM
Thanks Engadget!

Ah, a title that perfectly represents why I don't read Digg anymore.
paloooz @ Jun 29th 2007 12:33PM
Why?!? Why is this NOOB ranked high? He posted LIES, BLATANT lies on Digg and you rank him high?
The new iTunes doesn't have the ability to make your own ring tones, it has buttons left over from a dev build that USED to have that feature.
I'm with the guy above me, this is the primary reason why I don't read Digg and never will.
paloooz @ Jun 29th 2007 12:33PM
Ah, nevermind. Excellent. Rank him down! Rank him down into the pits of hell!
fred @ Jun 29th 2007 12:11PM

Michael Leung @ Jun 29th 2007 1:37PM
Wow!
But I think it still can't use our own ringtones instead of the original ringotnes which are built-in in the iPhone...

if i had to guess based on my sony-ericsson w810i's ringtone
support...
this isnt actually a ringtone button, but an alarm button.
for example, i have 1 mp3 on my phone (just to see how it worked), i
canNOT set it as my ringtone, however, i can set it as an alarm.so
that is my assumption
Erik @ Jun 29th 2007 3:33PM
you can set mp3's as ringtones with the Sony-Ericsson w810i - they just need to be less than 30 seconds long.
just a resident cynic @ Jun 29th 2007 1:00PM
Not trying to flame Apple or their interesting new toy, but whenever I read something like this the cynic in me cant help but think....
If they don't let users use regular music as ringtones, but instead made you have to pay for their own implementation of it I wouldn't exactly be surprised - I mean, isn't that the _real_ reason they wont let "proper" (access to os & kernel etc) third party apps on this thing:-
if they did, eventually (if not immediately) someone would build/port over, say, a media player that would have more functionality than whatever would come as standard on the phone for instance VLC player or something and then people would be able to play more that what apple lets them (eg MKV's, Divx, soft subs etc - sans conversion to MP4) and if one could do that "natively" then why [theoretically] would someone buy movies & TV shows from itunes?..........
(...."risk bringing down the network" huh?).
Realistically though, from their point of view I can see why they decided to play it out this way as they need to sustain revenue to keep their worker's paid, but from a consumer perspective it does disappoint - what good is a desktop OS on a phone if you can use it like a desktop OS?
The consumer in me can only hope that if the rumours of OS X based ipods be true, they are a little more lenient with their lock-down, at which point the cynic in me slaps him and asks if he genuinely believes that.
.....Which is a shame because the thought of widescreen, touchscreen, ipods that you can install things on is very interesting don't you agree?
Tom @ Jun 29th 2007 3:30PM
"what good is a desktop OS on a phone if you can use it like a desktop OS"
Amen, Mr. Cynic. Amen.
Tom @ Jun 29th 2007 2:43PM
oooooooooooooooooooooooo icons!
tim @ Jun 29th 2007 3:37PM
@ Erik -
well all right then! thanks for that tip, i had no idea about that
Mike Stith @ Jun 30th 2007 8:07AM
Is it possible that those are for ROKR ringtones?
Remember that there are other mobile phones that iTunes supports.....
