Archos 605 WiFi gets FCC approval

Archos's 605 WiFi device is hardly the secret it once was, but the device has just passed through a key step on the way to availability, snagging the much-need FCC stamp of approval. In case you missed it, the 605 is among the current crop of 5G Archos devices, looking much like the previous-gen 604 but boasting a few notable additions, including a higher resolution screen and increased capabilities (YouTube support among them). Of course, there's little left for the FCC to reveal that we didn't already know, but those curious to see how the device performed in its tests can bask in the details at the link below.

Now this is the type of PMP I could use. I wonder what codecs it's going to support?
JohnTitor @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:09PM
DivX/XviD, and WMV out of the box
if the Codec requires a license, you have to pay for it yourself (that's the way of keeping the price down)
that includes DVD format Mpeg2 (VOB), H.264, and AC3 and AAC audio
unfortunately no word on the free OGG or FLAC

Welcome back to this time thread, John Titor. As you can see, your WWIII / Civil War, did not occur in this dimension, which is the dimension you visited btw.
JohnTitor @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:04PM
maybe the 6th Generation will add GSM
anyone know if the ArchosTV+ got FCC approval yet?
Johan S @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:23PM
@JohnTitor
I think that wouldn't be enough to be make it sell. The display resolution is awesome but unless they work out how to include a GPS, a touchscreen, and like the next RAZR has .. in call "show-you-what-I'm-looking-at" video conferencing .. I don't expect it to sell because people will choose iPhone instead.
I doubt Archos has the expertise to include the features it needs to compete in the phone space.
Simon P @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:35PM
This is a PMP not a phone. It has a capacity up to 160gb and a bunch of other features that the iPhone certainly doesn't have. If people want a phone, they'll buy a phone. If they want a PMP they can't do better than an Archos. If they want to compromise a bit on both ends they certainly could do a lot worse than the iPhone i suppose but until someone improves both aspects in 1 device i'll stick with dedicated devices.
JohnTitor @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:37PM
well I was kinda saying it sarcastically, but the 605 WiFi doesn't have Touchscreen in case you didn't know
and I don't know how much it would cost to include GSM and whatever else is needed to be a phone
but if it lands maybe $100 more than the 605 WiFi $300 price tag, a lot of it can be cut by new service rebates
but again, I was saying it more so jokingly although a feature I would like to see added to the next series is built-in Bluetooth
Charbax @ Jul 2nd 2007 3:19PM
It does have a touchscreen. And a HSDPA 3G version probably is in the works (has not really been confirmed yet), hopefully the carrier that will partner with Archos and provide a good HSDPA data package subscription will not ask the WiFi to be removed.
zargon @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:52PM
If I remember correctly, the first number refers to the screen size?
I really would love for them to release a Wifi one that is 3" to 4". Sure the bigger monitor would be nice, but I would like something smaller. I would also take a cut in space, like the use of SD, especially since I would stream from my Wifi at home.
larry mcsandals @ Jul 2nd 2007 3:24PM
nope its just the name like the 5th gen ipod.
its a 4.3 inch screen..
Charbax @ Jul 2nd 2007 3:24PM
I'd just like it on a 6G or 7G version, they could make a future design with the large buttons removed and replaced by much smaller buttons on each side of the screen and on the border of the product, or maybe even have the buttons completely removed and the product being only controlled by the touchscreen. This would infact provide a product the size of the 405 with a touchscreen and features of the 605 simply without the large buttons and with less margin under the screen.
JohnTitor @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:26PM
the only one with the buttons completely removed is the 704
the 705 is also coming out and will be exactly the same except thinner and use the newer plugins
volta314 @ Jul 2nd 2007 3:05PM
Pretty sure the 605 wifi has a touchscreen. At least according to the archos site.

this has to be the most underhyped/underrated gadget ever. its got a touch screen, wifi, 4-160 gb hd/flash drive, 800x400 screen, it can actually play flash videos (dailymotion) all for relatively cheap, and yet it gets 9 comments compaired to the iphone's average of 140
Simon P @ Jul 2nd 2007 3:50PM
sssshhhhh, we archos fans secretly like it that way.......don't alert the iSheep
JP @ Jul 2nd 2007 4:35PM
This is why I tell everyone I know not to buy content from the iTMS. Some other sweet device comes out and you're stuck

Man, I am so getting this over the iphone. The 4GB flash version with SD slot costs only $200, which my current SD cards will tide me over til hopefully the 16GB SDHC come rolling out.
Constable Odo @ Jul 2nd 2007 6:35PM
That Archos device sure looks nice. I'd considered getting it as an alternative to my iPod w/Video player. When I saw an older Archos player at Best Buy the movie it was playing was looking really good. I'd imagined I could use the built-in WiFi to stream movies to it. I had heard there were some problems with it playing certain types of videos, but I guess any player can have that problem. I gave up the idea since I got my MacBook Pro and I can watch videos on that instead.
Apple fanboi or not, I think that the Archos 704 WiFi is really versatile since it can play many more formats than my iPod can and the screen size hits a nice sweet spot. You can also get the DVR Station and record from cable sources.

well archos 605 wifi is the most advanced PMP made by archos till now, its so optimum as a PMP, the size, the screen, etc
good quality - screen, built etc, touchscreen
but the BIG disappointments are that you have to pay $100 for the DVR, $30 for charger, $15 per codecs, thats both flexible and costly.
presently a satisfying deal will cost you $550,
Archos 604 wifi($400)
DVR station ($100)
charger ($30)
now this is archos 605 would be more costly, as it has more features, more resolution. I expect a archos 605 wifi 80GB to cost atleast $500. So where does that put you? 500+100+30 = $650
in $650, you can get a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527
15.4" Widescreen, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM, Intel Dual Core, and much much more. But you cant fit it in your pocket, like these PMPs.
All I said is see your requirements, i'll get archos (widescreen + tochscreen) just coz i'm a a bit of gadget freak, my life wont change much if i dont get it. But i'm planning to get some 605/604 if and only if i get it for $400 (PMP + DVR)
inborn evil @ Aug 15th 2007 3:04PM
correction,
I expect a archos 605 wifi 80GB to cost atleast $350. So where does that put you? 350+100+30 = $500

It would of been nice if they added bluetooth to allow connection to your mobile/cell phone. I have a Nokia n800 internet tablet and can browse the net no matter where I am at 3.6mbps. Like most people your mobile is always with you... I don't want it to have HSPDA support, just bluetooth to allow connection to your phone for browsing.
I would drop the n800 internet tablet in 2 secs if this device included this feature.
