Samsung BD-UP5000 dual format player to arrive in October
In a statement during Germany's IFA conference, Samsung promised to release its dual format player in October or November; and while there's no firm price yet, estimates are that it will cost about 400 euro ($544) more than their standard Blu-ray player. We assume that it'll be Blu-ray's first BD profile 1.1 player and at the same time HD DVD will get another stand-alone player from someone other than Toshiba -- this one actually supports HDi. While we seriously doubt a dual format player will help either side become the dominate format, it will help get some people down off the fence so they can start enjoying the best HD quality their TV has to offer.[Via Pocket-lint]

How about a hassle-free combo of HD instead?

Make sure that this can upscale normal dvds as well, and you've got yourself a sale.
What I'd really want is for a player that can Read/Write DVD, Blu-Ray and HD DVDs, as well as having a HDD, and two HD tuners in it. :P
That'd be all I'd need...
I'm a little confused though...in one of the source articles, it says it should be going for about €550, but other says that it looks like it'll cost €400 more than current players.
Which one is it then?
As well as that, one article says October 2008, while the other says October 2007.
I'm confused. :(

Dual format players don't make sense unless all players go dual format, which will also drive up their cost with dual use parts, dual software routines and dual sets of licensing fees. Screw that. I would rather someone/anyone win quickly.
