Considering Dynamism usually adds around $250 to their prices, this thing is going to be HOT.
Even if it is $1500, I can't wait to order one.
Boy that's a rediculous price. UMPCs aren't going to usurp laptops + cellphones anytime soon.
Hardly ridiculous. Sony UX series is $1800, Samsung Q1Ultra with decent specs is $1150.
For this price you get a 3G modem AND the dual interface Windows/WindowsMobile.
In fact, the price is actually lower than I would have expected. The HTC Advantage is $1150, so this thing is quite the bargain.
I think you need to bargain-hunt a bit harder - the Advantage launched at $899, and it's now down to $850 @ Amazon, free shipping, no tax. Sure hope no one's paying $1,150 for it ... yowza.
It's a waste to have this machine with both a PDA and a Vista function. A tablet PC is supposed to be a super set of a PDA. That is, it should provide all the functionality of a PDA.
Why do u say that? Its great cause u can get light computing done in WM6 mode and save a heck of a lot of battery life. This is the perfect UMPC and for the right price will take the world by storm like the iphone.
I would rather have one of these than an iphone any day of the week.
yeah i would also rather have this than an iPhone, but i would rather have an iPhone and an extra $1000 in my pocket than this PDA

I'm sure there's someone working on a UMPC with a decent battery life (like 5+ hrs) with only one operating system. Wasn't tablet PC os supposed to surpport quick on/off; touch screen; Windows full funtionality; and longer battery life?
I guess we are still waiting ultra-low-power consuming CPU, GPU, and OLED touch screen?
can you actually type with your full hands with that thing? It looks too big for thumb typing
I think the price is a bit high and it will most likely be lower, at least as soon as it get in to the main stream (I Hope). But it looks great.

The biggest splash this product will make is the news post on Engadget and other similar blogs. Like the rest of the UMPC machines out there, this thing isn't going anywhere. HTC isn't stupid, they obviously intend to make money from this device and only they know what their targets are. I suspect they're low since this thing screams niche.
Home PC's were once a niche product, as were laptops and mp3 players. Now they are all ubiquitous. It takes time for different form factors to prove their worth. Some people, like me, are very very interested in a ultimate convergence type of gadget like this. It would allow me to take digital notes during a meeting, watch movies on a plane, surf the internet, yadda yadda yadda, without the cramped screen of a pda or iphone, but without the bulk of a true laptop. The only thing I would really love is better battery life. This particular device has a nice approach with the dual operating systems. A lot of productivity type stuff can be done easily on a WM6 program while saving tons of battery life. The keyboard is the best so far from the UMPC camp. Besides if you don't want one, don't buy one. Just because it isn't right for you doesn't mean it isn't right for someone else.
Thi thing is huge, Vista to slow and overpriced.

Is this thing smaller than the OQO Model 02? If it is, someone should tell them cos they say the OQO is the 'smallest vista-capable PC' in the world...
I fell in love with this thing when I first seen the reviews, but at 1,500 price I am not sure if its worth its money. I think they are in the price range or larger tablet PC's that are more powerful and more expandable. The 1,000 I could deal with but the extra 500 is just a bit much IMO.
Until the UMPCs are also phones as a standard, they will never sell.
Not a single person of conventional wisdom and sensibility is going to carry this and a phone. I'm not sure why none of the engineers at HTC thought of this. Bring me on!
You know. Give me this with a top flight dual core cpu and a solid docking system for using it with a 'desktop' periphial set up and I would be all over it. let me do serious work when powered, clock down and turn off a cpu when mobile, plus able to swap to mobile 6 with cellular connectivity (with phone thank you).
This kind of device is the future. UMPC is the laptop of the late 80's to early 90's. Only folks with real specific needs are willing to pay the price for the compromises the design requires and the designers haven't nailed it yet. But down the road this is the sci fi 'data pad' concept.
Think of it this way. Take something in this form, project along Moore's Law in 2-3 years and you could have something along the lines of...
O-led sunlight visible low power display. Scalable multi core design running say 1-4 cpu's depending on power available and number crunching requirements. Scalable RAM working a similar manner with only so much active in a mobile capacity. SSD hard drive for even slimer design, faster access and lower power consumption. Some kind of standard bus interface for docking solution. Able to run external dual monitor set up. On the go it Has cellular data/voice and cell phone functionality is provided via wireless accessories. Blue tooth headset etc... Device stays packed in bag/briefcase (possibly with integrated antennae design) with hand free system for communication.
In short a one stop shop mobile computing core capable of everything from providing phone/communications - mobile computing - full desktop computing power in a package roughly the size of a hardback book.
