Ok we admit it, we thought the device pictured over the weekend by
Akihabara News was just the iPhone obscured by that iLuv case. But really, those pics were a bit preoccupied with something other than the, ehem, gadget. Fortunately, the good kids over at
dapreview sorted it out with pictures and a video of Samsung's sleek new flash player: the
Yepp YP-P2. A bit of digging also reveals plenty of specs courtesy of several unsubstantiated German language sites. These include up to 8GB of flash; biggie 3-inch, 428 x 240 pixel touch-screen display; MP3, WMV, WMA, and H.264 (MPEG4 AVC), MPEG-4 (ASF) support; Bluetooth (oh yes); integrated speaker and mic; and FM radio in a device just 100 x 52 x 9.2-mm thin. They've even implemented some of that
virtual click-wheel action hinted at by Apple patent applications but never quite implemented. Check another pic and video walkthrough of the interface after the break.

It looks nice... I wonder how much it'll cost and when it'll hit N America.
This has been the video that has impressed me the most after the demo of the iPhone. Even more so, because I know I actually stand a chance of buying one of these.
Come on Samsung! Close the deal and get us this player in the US!
Looks like a Zune Killer
why are people digging you down? I agree this is a zune/iphone killer.
How is it an iPhone killer if it isn't even a phone?
You people are insane.
Looks like an everything killer.
cosign
EXCEPT IPHONE
Apple better get going on their next generation of ipods to be able to compete with this....
^---- What he said!
I want to make love to it.
I think I just drooled over my keyboard....
That makes it two of us. This DAP has hands down the best touch screen after the iPhone. Now I'm just waiting for a version with at least 30GB.
that think is pretty sexy, what do you think the cost wil be?
what do 'datacasts' do?
And what is 'prime pack'?
What will it cost?
No ogg support is the suck though!
Well I have a Samsung T9 and Z5 that I use as my music players, both initially launched without OGG support and had it added later on so we'll just have to hope that this is the case for this as well, I said I was going to wait for 16GB solid state before I upgraded again so hopefully we'll see this in 16GB with OGG support further down the line.
Now that is one sexy ass MP3 player. I'll be getting myself one of these beasts!
Well that has raised the bar quite a bit. My brother has one of the original Yepp devices, its getting a little long in the tooth now, but they are solid little players. This new device looks like Samsung have actually read a ton of Forum posts and actually given people what they want. Bluetooth, FM tuner etc., all in one sleekly designed package.
I'm intrigued as to what the 'Prime pack' thing is too. When the person demoing the unit clicked onto it, it displayed 'Jokes for all occasions' and the 'Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', so it looks like its an electronic book too!
I like the way it has different interface setups coupled with the fact that you can have your own pictures as the interface wallpaper.
The other interesting thing was that there was a FONTS entry under the menu customisation - hopefully you can mess around to your hearts content with the font settings (even upload your own?)
It will be interesting how Apple respond with their 'touch screen ipod'
OMGOSH! This simply just pushed me off my chair...
I am currently holding onto my YP-K3 which is already in very bad condition because I didn't take extra care to prevent it from scratches... Of course it's still functional and pretty... However, the P2 PWNs it all!
It's nice to holding something like this on hand but I think I won't be needing so much functions and will only be paying for features that I won't need...
For example, I currently only listen to my own music and don't use the FM radio. I never really like the idea of watching video while commuting so I won't be needing that.
It's a wonderful gadget but I won't be needing that much.
Looks great but please dont add an integrated speaker! It just adds unnecessary size, weight, cost and ugly
Slick design, but with only 8 gigs it won't be killing any Zunes or Ipods anytime soon.
Lord, it's beautiful.
OLED???
I guess the only problem with it is that it cannot play about 300 million songs out there.
That may be a dealbreaker for some.
ok done iam sold. I WANT IT... i only wish it had a higher resolution on the screen. But its gonna have to come out before the ipod for me to hold off. Or the new ipod better be pretty impressive to beat this.
This thing looks very very similar as iphone.
Does the Apple patented the interface for touch-screen?
jesus christ man, not everything with a touch screen looks like an iphone!
I think this looks pretty promising and pretty slick.
@ Mike
true.. but the one physical button located center of the bottom fourth of the face of the phone that seems to act just like the
iPhones "home" button.. sure does seem to at least border on similar if not a blatant rip. Sure they are phones and its the most logical place for a button of that nature to be placed...And im okay with that, but dont be one of these people who will refuse to say a non Apple product is similar or even drew some influence from an Apple product because the only company that steals from other tech companies is Apple, right?
Errrr.... there are hundreds of PDAs dating back futher than 1995, with a button "located center of the bottom" underneath the touchscreen.
*SHOCK* *HORROR* Apple didnt do it first!
Now, shall i tell the iphone fanboys that ive been browsing the net and making phonecalls from my PDA for YEARS now?? i dont dont think they can handle the truth :P
mmmm... that looks sexy. I've always been quite happy with samsung DAPs, everything except for the amount of space they hold. My YP-Z5 is a beaty, very durable, nice recognizability, good menu layout (even though the touch pad isn't the best), and the battery life is absolutely amazing! All my iPod bearing friends didn't believe me when i told them I hadn't charged it since the end of June, and when I turned it on the other day, it still had an almost full battery, their iPods die in a week when not being used. 35 hour battery life is the shiz.
I have been waiting for this to come along for ages... I originally was waiting on the samsung YP-T9B (the bluetooth version of the T9 that Best Buy was supposed to get but never did). The last MP3 player I had was an Iriver from 2000, the hard driver version with a remote control with lcd that worked great while cycling and riding on my motorcycle, and the battery lasted for weeks on a single charge, using it 2 or so hours a day.
I have been very dissapointed with the apple products, they are so featureless, in fact other then their design, I find them hidious to use (atleast the ipod mini I gave to my fiance was)
I hope this comes to the US, really I do, I sit here reading about all these lovely devices that are are in asia, that are feature rich.. yet we are still stuck with the damn ipods.....
Woah!
*picks jaw up off the floor*
that is sex!
especially the whole circular motion scrolling thing
I'm guessing "Prime packs" will be downloads from Samsung's website adding extra functionalities - "Texts", "Alarm", "Calendar" and "World Clock" are displayed on the video.
I don't know about iPod killer, guess we'll have to wait for the new one, but definitely a nano killer.
its great an all, but will it blend?
that is the question
If you want this to get blended then you're sick in your mind....
somebody's somebody.I don't know this device will give some difference with Other DAP,for example,SONY,Iriver,Meizu.but from this ,I could imaging some future devices which base on the processor and flash from Samsung. What it will like?
There seems to be some lag when executing a song or movie, but the rest of the interface looks to be pretty quick. I'd definitely consider one if the price is right.

...huh? what?...
I dunno ...it seems like Samsung is aimlessly applying the touch screen technology with no real direction or purpose. There is no "cover flow" like list and no style to transitions etc. The screen is gorgeous though.
I'm bringing sexy back yepp.
No FLAC support?
Finally built-in Bluetooth! Now lets see if it ever comes out.
The Future is (wait for it) Samsung
What does that button on the bottom do? Is it like the iPhone?
Dont forget that the I phone is an obvious rip of of the LG prada which has been realised nearley a year before the I phone
I agree, this thing is seriously hot! Samsung have really stepped up their game this year, the always had nice products but now they've gone on an all out assault on everything shiny black. I have to admit I am a complete apple fanboy but they are messing about with publicity, hype, overpricing, oh and good old fashion corruption too much these days for my liking. Being but a mere UK citizen I am obviously subjected to stupidly long waits for products we should be receiving first due to the ridiculous price we pay for them!
Basically, if the iphone had been released here at the same time as in america, I would have most probably bought one, thinking about my finances later but I will probably have had 6 months to think about it and I'm not so sure it's such a good idea, lets be honest I just want a sparkly new touchscreen music video playing gadget.
I would be waiting for the new ipod or getting this and if the ipod looks like the iphone then there's only one winner looks wise and thats the samsung. I can overlook any software advantages an apple product may have because at the end of the day, silver rounded gadgets are out and shiny, black, sleek edgy products are in!
I've been holding out on replacing my iPod in anticipation of the 6G ipod. This is exactly what I want it to be, I hope this comes out soon. Too bad about the lack of AAC support though, looks like I would have to convert all my iTunes purchases.
THIS IS THE BE ALL AND END ALL. Samsung, you have my wallet.
I'm pensively excited (okay, frothing) for this device. It does look quite intuitive and the interface is a bit zippier than I would have initially expected, but until a price is announced, I can't pledge my allegiance in full.
Unless of course, we were dabbling in OGG and FLAC here. That would change the game substantially. Not that this is a reasonable expectation, mind you.
Wow, That's Samsung~
And now I guess samsung will study Navigation Model.
Lots of Korean IT Company has many Navigation models.
Yesterday, iriver has revealed shocking Navigation, NV.
http://product.iriver.co.kr/p_nv_feat.asp
It has perfect functions and appearance.
Lots of korean drivers have navigation.
and American, too?
OMFG SAMSUNG U MADE MY DAY (cries)
Forget the iPhone, forget the Zune, this is NOT a phone nor a Microsoft product!!! This is EXACTLY what I want - video, personal collection of my music (mp3, wma), my home videos (wmv) with a nice sized screen. Now with an integrated speaker and microphone, who can argue a point UNLESS the firmware crashes more than once in 30 minutes? The radio is nice, but what I want to hear is "It can record live radio.".
Now, give me a price and a place to buy one ASAP! It's 8GB, medium sized for me, more than enough space for a few songs, some video and oh wait a minute, by the video it also READS TEXT!!!! "Samsung deliver this to me and I will be forever grateful!"
My Sansa E260 is great, but the bluetooth and integrated speaker and document reading are features that put the Yepp 2 at the top of my list. I want one to test for crashing. Then praise this device in full force.
I can also ask for a expanded memory slot for more space added to unit, a/v out to my TV to play videos on it. (Yeh, I love electronics) Oh and price in the range of $120 to $225. My price would of course be $150.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH MY GOD!!!
BRING IT OVER HERE RIGHT NOW!!! I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH IT IS!! I'M BUYING ONE!!! GOSH THIS LOOKS 10 TIMES BETTER IPHONE!!!! GOSH HOPE I CAN GET ONE BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!
i'm still speechless. this is exactly what i need and what i wanted to be my next toy. man, this is the best looking samsung ever. and probably the best looking device i have ever seen. please bring it over here ASAP!!!
Ah, all this on the day you say don't buy an iPod... The 8Gb might be the deal breaker but how can you not see that and want one...?
Let me see, if Apple bring out the 6G iPod with iPhone UI and a 40-100GB disk, all the normal iTunes integration and something we didn't expect like, ohhh, dunno Wifi and a web browser and a .mac email account sync then yeah, that'd work - but for the first time I can reall, they might have a competitor product that sheer out geek-pr0ns them!
Gracious!
Hey did anyone noticed this but didn't the finger gestures for rewind or forward looked reversed? like for "back" he did to the right and "next" he did to the left
the light at the bottom is not an iphone like button but simply a light that comes on when charging, (it says in the www.pocket-lint.com pre release 'first look'). I hope the new nano looks like those pre release shots, cos if so it is a pile of w**k! and no amount of 'cover flow' can save it. I really do think the click wheel is so tired now and I think ipods actually look quite dated. Considering samsung make many of the ipod and iphones components it's about time the took some of the shine away from a company that insists on restricting the user to their own terrible software and refuses to support open source codecs and other popular formats! drag & drop all the way too! lets hope this spells a decline for apple, until they REALLY listen to what the consumer wants instead of nicely packaged products with very basic dated functions. power to the people!
Imagine what the 2nd gen of this will be. If this had an SD slot and bookmarks, it would be the end game for MP3 design. I'd buy several. I like the DNSe hotspot that cycles through the various EQ settings, without digging through submenus, and the quick search, where you slide your finger to the point you want played. And I like the large, black on white menus – easy to read while driving. And did I read built-in speaker? And a menu option for “Font”? Finally something a person can use out-of-the-box! No hacking necessary. I don't care what it costs! As of now, the iPod is passe.
Contrary to popular belief, the YP-P2 DOES SUPPORT OGG. Confirmed this from multiple Korean-based retailer sites.
A cheap shabby copy of Apple's outstanding products. Take someone else's idea, stick on a few bits for the geeks, undercut the original because you didn't have to pay anyone to come up with the idea, then sell it to the poor. The wave of iPhone and iPod Touch rip-offs begins...
Cheap Shabby? Er, if you think so. This is going up against new ipod nanos, (I bought a nano last month, but will sell it to buy the Samsung), and trust me mate, it's FAR from shabby.... each to his own tho'
Does it have an integrated speaker? I don't see it in Korean site.
This player is the be all end all for me. I bought an ipod touch at the same time as this thing on the premis that I'd return one and keep the other. The P2 won.
I just didn't like how the ipod looks, I don't like how it functions (hold mode is annoying) and I dont' like the broken wifi. The most terrible is the battery life.
The P2 has better audio quality, even through Bluetooth headphones (a lil bass loss during bluetooth operation) but the headphone quality using Sehniser in-ears or Shure E2's were in no comparison better than the ipod. The sound is clearer, more defined, richer, and 'warmer' to put it midly.
The video quality is the best I've seen on a portable player. It's crisp and clear, and you can tell that Samsung took the tech from their full size TV's.
While bluetooth will currently only connect to stereo headsets, there are three planned updates on the way (December, January, and March) these will add more functionality as we go along. the December update will add the phone sync ability that everyones been cheering about (and that I personally can't wait for! My car has bluetooth but no microphone, so I can't use it for calls, but if I can sync this thing to my phone, I'll just the audio transfer function to the car and the P2 mic as my new in car kit :D
The second update will add bluetooth file sharing and an OS/menu/GUI update (like it's needed...but if they can improve on whats already truley awesome go for it!). This update will also add game functionality. Useless for myself, but cool none the less.
The thrid is going to be 'beyond your imagination' according to Samsung... so who knows at this point.
The battery life is stellar. Upon opening the box it had 2 out of 4 bars of life. I have watched the included videos (some adds), the movie Phonebooth, and had about 10 hours of music playback, 8 of which using bluetooth connection. It started blinking this morning. The charge took 90 minutes, but I still left it on for four hours as recomended in the manual for the initial charge.
While the sound is crystal clear and the eq settings/effects are incredible, it is quiet. The preamp/amp seems to be underpowerd, but not by much. At max volume it is still plenty loud. I see this as a benifit because that way I don't have to worry about blowing my headsets.
The text reading function is pretty cool. As a new car sales person I constantly get bullitens so I just uploaded them to my P2 so I have access to them out on the lot if I miss info. I can also keep finance rates on there and any other info I may need. I just wish I could write messages into it so that I could make notes. Even if it was a T9 style text entry it would be cool.
The size is very ice, it's slim and very attractive. Even sleeker than the Touch. I'm still trying to decide which is better in terms of people asking which player you have...
'I got a Touch'
or
'I got a Y-P-P-2' or 'I got a P2' sounds like you need to goto the bathroom. The other one sounds perverted. At least it's not called the iTouch. :P
Very cool player, and even though it lacks WiFi...most hot spots are coded and pass locked now adays. And if your wardriving your usually going to do it with your laptop. If you really need to, get out your cell phone.
P2 = the win!
