As
Nokia said yesterday, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride." Alright then, fine with us -- now let's take it to the next level. We don't know what you're doing to further the big-name iPhone knockoff revolution, but we did our part and pitched in by making our pals at Nokia a commercial for that
hot new non-device of theirs -- free of charge. Sure, maybe it seems a little familiar, but gratis is a hell of a lot less than what TBWA \ Chiat \ Day charges. Commercial and downloads after the break.

hahahahaha! awesome. hopefully the nokia one will be half the price.
Morgan @ Aug 30th 2007 1:10PM
and twice as good.
EngadgetFanBoi @ Aug 30th 2007 2:09PM
Are you kidding? You think Nokia is going to release a product like that for a measly $300?
Nokia makes high-end products and it thinks of itself as an elite brand, so I would put my bets at $700 for this bad boy. And it will be much more exclusive than the iPhone (as in many fewer people will have it). The iPhone is still relatively new, but I see at least 4 or 5 everyday when I'm walking around which is a major negative for many people.
Morgan @ Aug 30th 2007 2:12PM
yeah - kinda reminds me of when the RAZR came out. you were special if you had one... then 2 months later, everyone had one.
NeoK182 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:07PM
i've seen only ONE iphone since it's release down here. and yea i'll admit nokia could make it a high end but the best idea would be to make 4 and 8GB versions and price them at say 400 and 500 or 350/450. cause then they'll take out the iphone
sr1329 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:08PM
Well at least Nokia will let it trickle down in time. They current make the world's smallest smartphone and it sells for $260 unlocked. So it would basically be a $50 smartphone subsidized. When this comes out it will likely come out on a $700-800 device but it will be followed with all their smartphones using the new dual interface. Soon there will be one that is $50 with a new contract. Sure they cater to the high end, but they are smart enough not to neglect the rest of the market either. That's how they are currently the largest cell phone maker, the largest supplier of digital cameras and recently the largest supplier of MP3 players in the world. (yes they beat Apple at their own game)
Dope @ Aug 30th 2007 4:13PM
Price would be realy intresting with the device? Would they make it cheap product and smoke apple away, make it on the same range as iphone or make it real premium phone with price tag as +700€. And how about the naming premium series phone 8xxx, N series phone or just Aeon =)

Ryan Block @ Aug 30th 2007 1:42PM
P.S. -Please, enough with all the "ZOMG BIAS!!!!!" / "YOU GUYS ARE F'N APPLE FANBOYS!!!" comments. It's a joke. No need to get all dogmatic!
Jeff Lewis @ Aug 30th 2007 3:03PM
I dunno Ryan - why not ask WHY so many people think Engadget is an Apple Marketing company instead of complaining that they do.
In fairness, yeah, you guys do publish a lot of non-Apple phone and gadget stuff and you've even been known to say nice things about some of those products. Heck, I've even read the occasional anti-Apple comment (although - in retrospect, they felt more 'I need to say something anti-Apple to sound unbiased' more than 'wow - this Apple product sucks'.
BUT...
If Engadget is going to obsess over Apple on a regular basis (exactly *how many* weeks did the iPhone orgy go on for here? - why does every Apple PR stunt get major coverage here?) then sorry, it's going to look like a shill for Apple.
Don't blame us for calling Engadget biased - compensate by having a more even hand in this sort of thing. Tone down the Apple-fanboyishness that pops up here regularly and we'll tone down the complaints.
Or grow a thicker skin.
There's really no other choices.
PS: I used to write MacSkeptic over at MacOpinion - and if you think THIS is rough - try writing a weekly blog/article on why Macs aren't as great as people think they are - as written by a Mac developer - in a pro-Mac blogzine. You've not experienced ANYTHING yet. :)
Ryan Block @ Aug 30th 2007 3:36PM
Jeff,
Depending on the post (or the day of the week) people are prone to saying we're Apple-bashers and Microsoft fanboys. The fact is neither angle is right. Those types of comments typically reveal peoples' own biases, projected on examples of posts that might go either way. The fact is we call it like we see it on a case by case basis, and we have fun with what we do. There's no editorial direction to like or dislike any company. Further more, I wouldn't say we obsess over Apple, we obsess over consumer technology -- Apple happens to be a major player. There's no barrier to entry for any company except that which we find interesting. Anywho, it's not that rough, I've been doing this for years. Just getting it out there.
Gudbergur @ Aug 31st 2007 4:43PM
Couple of things to add.
The media as a whole, not just Engadget, lingers on Apple news and makes more deal out of them then would they be from another source.
Second IMHO, in recent times i have yet to find a product from Apple that really calls for a "wow - this product sucks", although the new iMovie got it's fair share of bashing.
Veronica @ Aug 30th 2007 1:47PM

if nokia was to make an iphone trust me it would be the best of the best and have 10x as much features as apple's. Steve Jobs needs to stick to computers and ipods and leave the cellphone to the big boys NOKIA! I own every mac out there macbook pro, mac mini, iMac, and a macpro and i have 4 diffrent ipods yet i'm sorry when it comes to cellphones Nokia has and will always be on top! my N95 shits on the iphone and it will always be like that forever.
sr1329 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:11PM
You're right. I would never trade my N95 for an iPhone. I really can't go back to crippled carrier locked stuff as nice as the UI is on it. When Nokia puts this UI on their phones, there will be no competition.
Andrew @ Aug 31st 2007 4:27AM
Agreed. Nokia IS the shit. I'm not an apple fan myself, but I have been with Nokia since they wowed me with the 252. I still have it actually. I'd love to activate that baby, still better than Verizons entire lineup if you ask me haha
Beebel @ Aug 30th 2007 3:00PM
I would laugh for this video, but no as it made by engadget. Seriusly dosent anybody think that apple is paying something for them? Because there wasent single other blog that stated Nokia TS would look like in the video. And like no Nokia said vidoes idea was just to show how would the OS work And I'm not saying that the OS wouldnt resemble iphone =D
Btw Nokia released this about 4 months before iphone
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=NokiaDesign
Make any of those phones work and i'll buy it. I realy hope Nokia would make Nokia like product, but with great UI. With out forgetting the great things with S60 and endless tweaking for ur liking.
Daniel @ Aug 30th 2007 3:07PM
They did make couple of them. Heres one more.

Fanboi-ism at it's best. This is the evolution of the mobile phone market, not just copying a company. Apple is trying to revolutionize the market, and this is how it happens. We all saw this when the Razr came out, as someone mentioned before. And with the Treo, many people followed. Products very similar to the iPod are also everywhere. I'm not sure what has happened to this site, and the users. Apple does make a pretty good product, I now own a G5 dual processor with two 20in Cinema displays, and the new-style keyboard, and it is pretty nice. But there are Windows features I miss. I don't dislike one OS or company more than another, although I do believe that Nokia can take what Apple's first entry into the market did, and build on it, with their experience in this area. I hope so, because if I can get it outside of that shit network, I might actually pick one up. I bought an iPhone, and returned it at the end of the 14-day trial. The phone itself was good, I myself didn't take a liking to the keyboard, but people did say it has to grow on you. I don't like the lack of tactile feedback when typing though, not on my phone. But the network they could find to bend to their every whim is horrible in South Carolina, and from what I've heard on here it's pretty crappy a lot of places. Maybe it's just me, let the fanbois decide.
AdamY @ Aug 30th 2007 4:21PM
Yeah man, totally, South Carolina IS pretty crappy most places.
Daniel @ Aug 30th 2007 3:16PM
Nokia has the biggest resource to do a all mighty phone, but i would want it to be still a Nokia device. Time will tell thought i would like to see the device they are planning already!
samgoody818 @ Aug 30th 2007 3:16PM
every company copies another nokia may copy the iphone's interface abilities but atleast it gave them credit for and said we'd copy it with pride unlike how iphone copied the exact same internet browser built into nokia's and tried to call it revolutionary.
mattstl77 @ Aug 30th 2007 3:20PM
Maybe Nokia will actually teach Apple how to make a quality product!
dan @ Aug 30th 2007 1:45PM
Really.... Apple has no quality products? Are you referring to a quality product such as an N-gage??? You can keep your "quality" products.
Justin @ Aug 30th 2007 2:16PM
Yeah, that Symbian OS is really going to show Apple a thing or two about quality.
*rimshot*
mattstl77 @ Aug 30th 2007 3:35PM
Actually, I am referring to frequent number of crashes in Apple products, the over pricing of such products, and overall lesser quality.
MonteVale @ Aug 30th 2007 4:11PM
Funny,
yet I bet Nokia would love to make something like this with a touch screen and now they probably (after the iPod has buit the inroad).
However I agree that iNok is most likely going to cost quite a bit more as with anything full featured that has been made by them.
iPod has made a lot of different companies scramble their future plans and pull their hads out of their axxx...
sr1329 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:18PM
It is true. They taught Sony a big lesson. Atrac is dead.
Matthew @ Aug 30th 2007 4:16PM
I have to agree, this has been taken too far! Are you saying that Apple created touchscreen devices? Nokia have had at least 1 touchscreen device released year+ before the iphone so apple arent exactly being original.
Apple has never been the first and neither has nokia but the way that you seem to slate every other company of copying apple's devices is crap. A good example of this: Engadget didnt cover the N95 in the same way that you covered the iphone.
Dont get me wrong, i love engadget, i visit this site everyday! However, if i see anything saying 'APPLE' i skip it. They arent the best, other companys are better!
A year ago this site was completely unbiased, the users were neutral and arguments didnt arise as much, however, now its a differnet story. This site needs to clear out the die hard fanboys and start reporting interesting things again. Cut the shit (apple, microsoft etc) and start reporting interesting things!
sr1329 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:20PM
Yeah the Nokia S90 platform and 7710 phone was out way before this. They are rolling in all their features from the S80 and S90 platforms into S60. This was planned out a long time ago. Too bad they demoed it only now.
Matthew @ Aug 30th 2007 4:23PM
@ sr1329
Yh, i couldnt remember the model numbers. If nokia do release something like this then it will ROCK!. S60 is completely unrestrictive, and you can record video on nokia's, am i right in saying the iphone doesnt do that?
sr1329 @ Aug 30th 2007 4:38PM
I don't know it the iPhone can record video but for sure it can't take pictures at 5MP or record video at 640x480 at 30fps. Nor can it take 3rd party applications. When Nokia deploys this, it will be insane for the power user - not the fashion user.
Dope @ Aug 30th 2007 4:34PM
Aye monte, but this is a bit different story Nokia is real company a giant with 37% market share and realy stablished place in EU and Asia. Nokia has reinvented them before. One of the Nokias problems is that they got huge portfolio of phones and they seem to have probs on making perfect phone (theres always missing one feature) thought this dosent of course mean the realy high priced Nokia phones.
But apple realy have made something and showed what kind of UI should everyone have. I'm talking about the use of it and the looks of course it would still need to be open and tweak able out of the box. Competition is always good especially now when Nokia is pretty much on its own(motorola on crappy condition) i mean how great it would be with nokia like feature set--> iphone UI---> S60 endless apps.
DoctorJ @ Aug 30th 2007 4:44PM
Well on the new N95 8GB the UI dosent seem too shabby

That was very nice.

Guys, who felt the need to protect Nokia and bash Engadget: please relax.
I'm a Nokia fan (not a fanboy with religious feelings) and I've been using Nokia phones in the last 11 years. My next phone will be a Nokia (N95 8GB, N81 8GB or E65 - still deciding ;-), but for me it was just a joke. Not hilarious, but funny at least to play with the similarities with the iPhone.
If you feel the need to protect Nokia against Apple, Engadget (or the world) ... well, differentiate with some decent behavior then. :-) There are too many Apple, Linux, Firefox (etc etc) fanboys bashing everybody else - so why not prove that your beloved Nokia (if you think that an electronic device actually defines who you are ;-) is superior because it makes you a better person? :-)
As a matter of fact: I postponed my Macbook purchase for a year, because I did not want to be associated with Apple fan(atic)boys. I don't want to be in the Elite Club of Superior Apple Owners - I just want a notebook.
BenN @ Aug 31st 2007 11:00PM
Did noone else listen to the video as well? It seemed to me that whilst it took the piss out of Nokia for copying, it also abused Apple for creating a device that wasn't really as ground-breaking as everyone thought it would be. No fanboy-ism for either side in that video.
Kanga @ Sep 1st 2007 11:34AM
Do u really know what an unbiased opinion is? Thats nearly impossible to achieve! If Engadget's readers r gadget freaks then alot of the bashings wouldn't really b bashings. There r pioneers in industries...and not every pioneer makes good products. I've been in electronics for about 25 years and can easily spot the difference between a pioneer and a quality manufacturer. Nokia has not been a pioneer in most of the tech that they build. But they make the best quality stuff. They dug a hole for themselves when they took so long to enter into the touchscreen market(not with internet tablets). They still make some of the best phones but they need to get with the program or lose some of their customer base to alot of these touchscreen manufacturers.
HTC does not make quality products, but they now have a market share so many manufacturers been scrambling for. WHY? Because they make products that r "up to the time"!
The iPhone is a revolutionary product no matter who r what is reviewing/using it. No one alive can change that! The did it with the iPod and they're doing it again. The industry will follow and the world will be making accessories and add-ons. You try and change that!
And by the way, I'm a die-hard nokia user that has an iPhone!
iPhone is a clone too @ Sep 5th 2007 9:08AM
For those Mac addicts who do not see the forest from the trees iPhone is NOT very intuitive concept. Finns did it already back in 2003... http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=547
And you said:"I've been in electronics for about 25 years and can easily spot the difference between a pioneer and a quality manufacturer". "The iPhone is a revolutionary product no matter who r what is reviewing/using it. No one alive can change that"!
Yeah right.. Gimme a break!
