Sony teases us with Drive
Sony sure loves to tease, and while the Rolly campaign finally resulted in an actual product, we're still scratchin' our noggins on this one. There's not a lot to go on when looking at the teaser page for the simply-titled Drive, and aside from that delightfully green bow and a seductive "Coming soon" phrase, all we can make out is something akin to a scaled-down treadmill with a turgid windscreen. Okay, so maybe it's just an all-in-one PC of some sort (we can almost imagine a floating LCD behind that ribbon), but we'll leave the real guessing to you.

sony drive is the portal of sony in japan, not the name of the product...
Patrick @ Sep 28th 2007 4:20PM
Definitely a cheese slicer.
You heard it here first.
Paragraph @ Sep 28th 2007 4:30PM
not just a cheese slicer, a portable USB powered cheese slicer with WiFi connectivity with other sony products.
Yes, you can slice cheese automaticly from your PS3!
What a great future we will live in :D
samnesral @ Sep 28th 2007 4:34PM
The worlds first bloatware and crapware filled cheese slicer!
paul34 @ Sep 28th 2007 4:43PM
Hmm, does it also install suspicious items in your cheese supply? Does it send back a list of all your cheese types?
jbulava @ Sep 29th 2007 2:17AM
Yes, but you have to use Sony's proprietary cheese.
david @ Sep 29th 2007 10:04AM
Its a combo Segway and vacuum cleaner.
Raj @ Sep 28th 2007 4:22PM
may be transparent LCD screens
Paragraph @ Sep 28th 2007 4:22PM
... umm yeah, like Jonas said, Sony Drive is the sony website, not the product...
as for this mystery thing, i've got some theories
1. AIO (like you think)
2. Desk Lamp
3. Over Head Projector
4. Dancing Robot
5. Calculator
6. New Sony Logo
ehh, whatever, i won't lose sleep over this
Derry Quinn @ Sep 28th 2007 5:25PM
I think its a monkey with HUGE testicles inside a funny box to confuse us
Bizarroterl @ Oct 1st 2007 10:36AM
It's a dual format HDDVD/BluRay deck!
Ummm, well, maybe not.
Ryan @ Sep 28th 2007 4:28PM
Definitely the updated version of the HCB-100 Bluetooth Car Speakerphone, so you can talk and "Drive". The little arm is the antenna and it clips onto your sun visor.
Nathan @ Sep 28th 2007 5:30PM
I have to agree, it looks very much like a successor to their HCB-100
below is a link to a picture of the HCB-100
http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/sony_hcb-100.jpg
Notice the similarities, the angled body with pronounced thickness and a little clip to keep it secured in your car?
Darren @ Sep 28th 2007 4:31PM
It's obviously a paper slicer. I knew Sony was stretching for ideas, but come on!
V @ Sep 28th 2007 4:37PM
Obviously its a slimmmer 1080i camcorder (like Sanyo's) that comes bundles with a free paperclip.
jmattick @ Sep 28th 2007 4:41PM
Obviously it's Sony's competitor to the iPhone
... I got nothing.
Carlos @ Sep 28th 2007 4:46PM
It's an all in one PC for sure - not sure why they would give it such a huge footprint on your desk though, kinda defeats the purpose.
Paragraph @ Sep 28th 2007 4:54PM
well first off, the arm is offset to the nearest side, so if it is a AIO, it's not designed very well ;)
secondly, the larger footprint would allow for more space for hardware, meaning non-laptop hardware, meaning more upgrade options, more power, and when you add the two together you get a higher price meaning sony makes more money.
But, if this is an AIO, and is Mini/ATX that means it should be able to have a Quad core beast slapped in it as an option, meaning you'll have one mother of an AIO.
THJ @ Sep 28th 2007 4:46PM
Needs more thin.
Kichigai Mentat @ Sep 28th 2007 4:49PM
It's a paper cutter. Duh.
Seth @ Sep 28th 2007 4:51PM
Bobsled/blue-ray drive? What's that handle thingie?
JBell @ Sep 28th 2007 4:56PM
Duh! It's their latest iPod killer.
Derry Quinn @ Sep 28th 2007 5:26PM
WTF???
Muncher @ Sep 28th 2007 4:58PM
Duh! It's their latest iPod killer.

WTF??
joelc @ Sep 28th 2007 5:01PM
this device is actually rather large. the term Drive lends itself towards some sort of transportation device, which is why it is appropriately named. it's a segway like device where you stand on the platform and control all axis by moving the large oar-like stick on your side. Yes i said all axis, this baby hovers to a maximum height of 15ft. it is a entering the crowded PCD (personal commuting device) market, but sony has defined markets before (look at the walkman). They are aiming to cash in on the overpriced-oil jaded singles working on the second floor crowd first.
lolec @ Sep 28th 2007 5:01PM
Rolly's girlfriend... a vacum
spyyder @ Sep 28th 2007 5:04PM
Uh, its part of their digital camera line.
Jerome @ Sep 28th 2007 5:25PM
electric stapler!
Avi @ Sep 28th 2007 5:07PM
GPS
Don Kidick @ Sep 28th 2007 5:12PM
Hedge trimmer (the front bum type of hedge). You know it's true.
Tom @ Sep 28th 2007 5:20PM
Hmm. A tiny portable projector? ("Antenna" folds down away from us, ribbon covers the lens and controls).
(Or maybe a portable projector that can also cut paper and kills ipods)
Sirocco @ Sep 28th 2007 5:26PM
Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be Transcendent. I want one.
Shaun @ Sep 28th 2007 5:29PM
Hate to break it to you guys, but I believe this has some sort of resemblance to that OLED TV you guys posted about recently. Take a look. . . http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/sony-thumbs-nose-at-samsung-confirms-oled-tvs-by-december/
Tom @ Sep 28th 2007 5:45PM
Yeah, but if you look carefully, there's only one "arm" (like a paper cutter).
I hope you are right though.
Jerome @ Sep 29th 2007 4:54PM
You ruin my entire fun!
I really think this is a TV because the vertical green ruban is hidding the VERY SLIM screen! It could even be a computer screen!!
Your the man man!

anonymous @ Sep 28th 2007 5:36PM
It is an external hard drive/tuner. It is an add-on for the PS3 giving it DVR capabilities. The "wing" is the antenna for OTA broadcast channels.
Trust me.
Matthew F @ Sep 28th 2007 5:37PM
where's all the rootkit jokes?
dydo @ Sep 28th 2007 6:02PM
Obviously it's a OLED TV

Yup. Meta keywords on the page say:
Organic television and organic EL television, brassiere beer, SONY, SONY and high picture quality, television and organic EL panel, high contrast, wide color gamut, high-speed responsiveness, energy conservation, scantness and the next generation display, "
And the meta description: The SONY organic EL television official web sight. World first "organic EL television" created. Natural color in order to reappear while it is natural, as for the television to the organism. Releasing the information and the like of product information support of the "organic EL television".
(according to Babelfish translation)

It's probably the slimline salad shooter attachment for the PSP. Move over GPS!!!
totencough @ Sep 28th 2007 7:12PM
A brand new car!!!
raymie @ Sep 28th 2007 7:18PM
G4 iMac.....is that you?
Rajat @ Sep 28th 2007 7:41PM
It's Basically a light box. You know the sort that architects use to copy huge engineering sheets!!! :-)
It's for students with a DRIVE... increase stealing of graphic sheets.
Remember, Apple Jobs once said some stealing about some artists... Sony's in on it as well!!
TechGuy @ Sep 28th 2007 9:21PM
Looks like a pager, with Bluetooth, for whatever reason. The paperclip thingy is a belt clip. Long live the pager.
Francis Lau @ Sep 28th 2007 7:54PM
It's obviously an all in one computer thing, the green ribbon exactly covers the ULTRA thin monitor we saw earlier.
Eddie @ Sep 28th 2007 8:18PM
Thank you so much for inventing another device that will undoubtedly take the world by storm and show everyone you are the king of electronics once and for all Sony!
Signed,
BetaMax and MiniDisc
Jay @ Sep 29th 2007 1:57AM
Yeah, I mean when have Sony ever brought us anything worth using? Who ever used floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, personal stereos, trinitron TVs, Playstations.....?
William McGough @ Sep 28th 2007 9:12PM
It is not called the "Sony Drive". Sony Drive is the name of the Sony Japan information website.
William McGough @ Sep 28th 2007 9:12PM
This will probably be released at CEATEC 2007 on October 2.
