Apple posts Leopard Guided Tour
Apple's been all about the video guided tours lately, and with Leopard just around the corner, the company's gone ahead and put John, The Classy Salt-and-Pepper Apple Store Employee, in front of the camera to walk you through the new release. Nothing particularly new to report, but it'll keep the fanboys warm for another week.

thanks for crediting me with this story!
...not.
He’s an Apple store employee!?
Not in my local Apple Store. Those folks are minimum wage, hipster (wannabes), condescending assholes. Last week when I was in that store and checking out a Touch, the unwashed employee with the thirty tattoos and black fingernail polish wash rushing thru a demo of that device and smugly stated, “and it’s ONLY $399.” ONLY $399!? I wanted to slap him while yelling, “And how much do YOU make?”
Just from a still I can tell that guy is going to be a smug asshole.
I was thinking the same - enough of the smug smarmy-looking geek yuppies AAPL..try some real looking ppl. It seems a whole lot less condescending. Just from that still, I've decided to avoid the walk-through and wait on the YoutTube version lol!
"Hi, my name is Raven and I'm and elitist asshole"
DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE HOW MUCH THAT ASSHOLE CLENCHED HIS JAW WHEN HE TURNED TOWARDS THE COMPUTER. WOW... IT MADE HIM LOOK SO TUFF :(
BTW, wow! That Filesystem is amazing compared to vista. I don't know how much more 'productful' it would make me, but it is amazing. I never thought I would say that about a file system before.
And he kept reminding himself about going on the Hawaii vacation and buying a $5000 bicycle, all the same time, playing golf in Space #4. :)
All I can say is that he creeps me out, from the picture.
He wasn't that bad in the video though, not as bad as the picture made me fear.
You're just seeing what you want to see. Or perhaps Apple should use a fat, sweaty, bald man to scream through their OS demo videos.
Could be worse. They could have gone the "Apple guy" and "PC guy" route.
The irony of it is that engadget pokes fun at Apple fanboys.
"but it'll keep the fanboys warm for another week"
Haha
Why is apple always assuming that the public is a bunch of retards? First, the made whole commercials with step by step directions of how to use iphone's different features...No how to use a Mac...
Come on, seriously...We are introduced to Mac/PCs in like first grade...I am pretty sure we all know how to use one without a guided tour...
Grammar Errors - No EDIT BUTTON!
Because they are retards. I hope all the retarted windows users go to macs.
nightryder21
so your saying, retards have to upgrade from PC to MAC to better find their niche? man for a fanboy your stupid. your basically saying MACs are made for idiots and that PCs suit people above a 2nd grade level.
my god, if thats the best microsoft flaming you can do, just go work for them, they like you.
Hmmmm.... speaking as a Mac user who runs a help desk, I regularly hear from unknowing users something like: "I don't know how to use a Mac. I'm comfortable with Windows and I'm not going to try something different."
Not everyone is like you. They see something different and they freeze. We're geeks. There's a difference between us and the public-at-large.
"so your saying, retards have to upgrade from PC to MAC to better find their niche? man for a fanboy your stupid."
...then YOU'RE an idiot.
Ok, I just watched it. Overall I think it was nicely done. It is just the right level for my somewhat computer savvy family to see what new features there are, and how they might want to use them. Having this basic intro gives people a look at what is new, so they can decide what to go investigate further.
While there may be fanboys about, you are what is called a troll.
The large majority of Apple's customers are idiots.
I'm not a fanboy...but it's Mac. Mac is short for Macintosh, PC is short for Personal Computer. Macintosh=Mac=one word. Personal Computer=PC=two word abbreviation. MAC=Mandatory Access Control. I'm sorry but I see this all the time and decided to say something.
Actually a lot of people do not know how to use a computer. They actually need these guided tours. I'm pretty sure Apple is not making these videos for anyone that reads these blogs. Not everyone that use computer's are geeks like us. I use to work for Apple answering sale calls and I couldn't believe how many people had questions like "does the Mac connect to the internet?" or "if someone sends me and email using a PC can I view it on my Mac?". Plus I'd say half of the calls I got were from new Mac users.
@ Elais
Are you serious? You are a fanboy!
I'm downloading the high res video and watching that shite full screen on my lunch break.
Better watch out. I don't think most companies take to masturbating on company grounds too well...
Not only was he going to do it, but he felt the need to announce it to the world first.
Why the discrimination against salt-n-pepper'd hair males? Stereotyping? I see.
(yeah, so. Atleast I'm not needing a rug, plugs or dye job) :P
What's up with his mouth after he said "brand new release of Mac OS 10"?
I just watched it and have to say the funniest parts are when he uses iChat theater and when he tells everyone that "Leopard will take about 1-2 hours to install, so you can go get a cup of coffee or go for a walk."
2 hours? Installing Windows XP SP2 only take 56 minutes or so....
I've installed it numerous times, and it doesn't take 2 hours to do an install. Maybe 30 minutes, and that would include the dev tools.
It might take 2 hours if you are doing a migrate from another machine (where it copies all your files, documents, images, music and applications from your old machine).
I haven't done an upgrade however, but I don't know why that would take so much longer. 2 hours seems excessive... no idea how they came up with that number.
Zed, I'm guessing what they're implying is that it'll take a few hours to install + transfer old docs + configure all the new settings for your own preference - time machine and such - but who knows, we'll have to wait n see in a week. :)
"... it'll keep the fanboys warm for another week."
Nope, Apple fanboys usually rub their balls together to keep warm.
good one. . .
this video is M$ soft funboys worst Nightmare LOL i dare them to watch the entire thing lol and not cry
by what im hearing, its a microsoft lovers best dream, apple keep alienating their customers and making the slightly experiences users feeling like hicks.
i THINK that might cause some hard feelings
I'm not a microsoft fanboy (although I do own a Vista desktop to go with my Macbook Pro), and I couldn't even sit still long enough to watch all the stuff about the dock. The video was incredibly boring, in my opinion, but there's only so much you can do to make this stuff interesting.
I'm sure the Apple fanboys didn't so much as shift their weight through the entire thing, but I'll just wait till I get the upgrade and figure it out myself.
It doesn't take a fanboy to see that OS X is the best OS out there, so you can stick those fanboy comments where the sun don't shine.
another guided tour video from Apple for al those lost "any name here"-Windows switchers....
i think he loos kinda hot... plus, apple has been plublishing those "made for dumb" videos a lot lately, not real news here just yet another apple post
hey that guy looks just like lord steve, lol am just wondering when is he goin to bless the iphone with another software update
In the future, we will all have perfected mannerisms, a lose finishing cotton shirt, age gracefully, and have just the right amount of tan.
i lol'd.
Are the fanboys warm because they have wet themselves with excitment?
Looks like powerful file management to me. I have both an iBook and $3000 PC laptop. Keeping track of stuff in Windows is an increasingly nightmarish user experience, and breaks my flow of thought all the time. It's turning into a huge productivity suck. I'd rather work with the $1000 iBook, which does the basics, and does them well.
get Google desktop. Forget filing. Find stuff. It works.
Finding files and folders isn't hard if you actually organize it.
Is it just me, or does that look like cameron fry from ferris buellers day off?
"When cameron was in egypt's landdd... let my cameron goooo"
At least they stopped using Jeff Goldblum.
Yep, they did stop using him... like 10 years ago!
Come on... does anyone really know who Jeff Goldblum is any longer?
hey! jeff goldblum was (and still is) the man.
Did you see? The keyboard looks wireless, but it is full desktop-like.
Ummm, WHICH Apple store does John work in?
'Cuz.... John's H O T.
(You detractors are just jealous of his Jobs-like diction, his Clooney-esque hair, and his Pitt-ish biceps... Ggggrowwwwllllll!)
I agree.. HOT, HOT, HOT..
I'll add another vote for HOT - I would be all over that. Someone find out what store he's at.
Why are they so obsessed with coverflow? It's a fricking visual effect, not Jesus!
And Peter, that keyboard is not wireless. There is a distinct wire running from the mac to the keyboard.
They don't mention how well Time Machine scales with dropping hard drive space. Does anyone know this?
I quite like how they've fixed up network sharing, and the stacks thing is pretty well implemented.
I don't get the fuss over big, "quick" file previews, though. The drunk who came up with this obsession in operating systems should be ashamed.
Viewing files should be handled by individual programs designed for viewing files, not by a bloatified file manager! What would be nice is if the file viewer was used by default to open these files, had really really smooth loading, and handled file type associations such that one can choose "Edit" within the viewer to jump to an image editor (or such).
Ah well, nicely done Apple, nicely done...
Actually, I take that back. At one point, the keyboard seems to magically become wired, but it is wireless for most of it :)
Actually, I think APPLE is obsessed with Cover Flow, because it is the opening to the Touch lifestyle that APPLE is getting in.
Leopard looks like it had been made to be touched. The icons are more bubbly, and the entire OS looks like it can be used with the finger.
I cannot wait for this iTablet like thing...
"so your saying, retards have to upgrade from PC to MAC to better find their niche? man for a fanboy your stupid."
...then YOU'RE an idiot.
did you read his comment that i was responding to, thats how he said it.
Steve Jobs called, he wants his sweater back.
jobbs would never been seen without a turtleneck please.
son of dustin hoffman?
To all the keyboard nitpickers. The keyboard cable is running up the thin side of the computer stand. They purposely taped/fastened it there during the video.
I feel so sorry for these jealous, griping Windows users. They seem so upset because Vista doesn't offer guided tours. If they did, viewers would get lost in about one minute then have to stare at a BSOD for two more minutes, then watch the guide scratch his crotch for another two minutes. Tour over, Vista over, game over. A Vista tour would be so boring, it would be like watching skid row on rainy Saturday night with the hookers plying their trade.
Such a bunch of whiney Windows users. Nobody's even asking them to watch the stupid guided tour. Obviously they can't resist since they're so lonely with nothing else to do once Vista crashes for the gazillionth time. Why don't you Apple haters take a guided tour of the Seattle city dump. You can find a whole bunch of discarded, unused Vista discs to rummage through.
Green with envy over some simple-minded guided tour ad. How freakin' pathetic can ya get. Some Windows users must have the confidence of a wet noodle to concern themselves about some guided tour.
Now in leopard there an easy button called iTroll..
there's*
omg dey so stole that feature from windows D:
Haha n1 :)
this post needs to be nominated to the troll hall of fame
maybe that's cos you don't need to be taught how to use windows?
it's been the mainstream OS for quite a while now...I'm pretty sure most people have gotten the hang of it by now. apple NEEDS (or probably benefits from) to do these kinda things to encourage people to make the switch.
I'm planning to switch to a Mac anyway, and found the guy in the video friendly and hardly at all snotty when I went through the tour.
Awesome another service pack I can get for $2000.
Why do they all make them dress like Steve Jobs? If he works at an Apple Store, shouldn't he be wearing a shirt that says "Retard"...I mean "Genius"?
judging by these comments, I'd say very few actually took the time to watch the video...
ichat and the remote desktop features were great, but that was the only thing that impressed me.
in my oppinion, windows vista has much better view options, I mean... the icon view is the only half decent one there, coverflow might be good for sifting though pdf's and keynote shows, but other than that, it's just icandy... at least windows got it right when they added thumbnails back in windows me (granted everything else about that os was fail)
functionality > icandy
That ichat assumes unlimited bandwidth available, and everybody to be a mac user.
IF that were true it wouldn't be too bad.
I see a few Amiga and XP tricks in there...oh and wow virt desktops are all the rage now.
The ui polish of Coverflow/TimeMachine impressed me.
Why are mac lovers so defensive about the spelling...it's about context. This isn't a structural drawing or technical diagram; I can assure you that nobody here confused any "mac" replies with the Midlands Arts Centre.
It's a comment. (go home...the barista hates you)
If someone could please locate a post on the intarweb of someone defending the capitalization of XP/Linux/Amiga please let me know...
Dylan K - too funny
Midlands Arts Centre? Now surely that's an oxymoron...
Wow, this is hilarious how people get their panties all in a bunch about this stuff. I've always used windows and just bought my 1st Apple product in the iphone so I have no bias (actually I'm a unix admin so I'm bias towards that). I think Apples stuff is pretty good from what I've seen. You keep seeing references to these "fanboys" but anytime Engadget posts ANYTHING Apple all you see is people bashing anything from "he clinched his jaw" to "Apple customers are stupid".
Does this really get you that worked up? I'm confused I thought Microsoft and Gates were evil, so now its Apple and Jobs? To be honest I think people just like to hate whatever gets marketing hype or is viewed as corporate. Basically its cool to disparage any big company. So much whining and bitching. You guys sound like NOTHING is good enough regardless of who makes it. Now thats elitist. I mean attacking the way people look, how they talk, I mean who gives a crap! What do you guys look and talk like? I'm curious what everyone would have preferred to see.
Apple=elitist, maybe so but reading all these comments it seems like a case of pot calling the kettle....blah blah. This is my 1st post on Engadget but just had to give my observations.
This guy WAS selected from many by apple, as is what he wears I'm sure.
So it's not unreasonable to have a view on a deliberate corporate profile completely fabricated with the thought of influencing their target audience.
Also yeah there are many big companies who are idiotic in their views and strategies, to be aware of that isn't exactly 'elitism'
And yes it is possible for ALL players in a field to be annoying and disliked justifiably by people.
If you are really a system admin I'm sure there are areas where you think all software solutions for it are lacking for instance, and if you are a normal person I'm sure you would not avoid saying that when asked.
Personally I have plenty of criticism on all operating systems I tried, and on most all software packages, and I don't feel I'm wrong in observing flaws when there are flaws.
Geez ten minutes to explain stacks, which are equivalent to damn toolbars windows had since what? 3.1? and you can get downloads to go into a FOLDER!!! hmm, very advanced that. and dropshadows are new to apple? and fav places is old too on all OS's.
And the 'time machine' concept is cute but damn, you can't save EVERYTHING, people delete stuff for a reason, basically they could have just removed their delete function and have the same effect.
And multiple desktops? it's like watching a introduction to linux in 1990 or windows 95.
And emails with decoration, goddamn can someone realise it's not 1950 and you can't allow mail to show html and graphics? unless you wish to be annoyed and disgusted.
Then there's their ichat, with cute functions that assume you have unlimited bandwidth that's never in use, and you only want to talk to apple geeks.
Colour me underwhelmed.
No need for a dumbed-down computer. The mac is whack!
Vista is science project. OSX is a masterpiece.
"So it's not unreasonable to have a view on a deliberate corporate profile completely fabricated with the thought of influencing their target audience."
So the fact that Apple employees wear black t-shrits influence their target audience? So if he wore a grey shrit I guess the target audience would be confused. Or am I missing your point?
"Also yeah there are many big companies who are idiotic in their views and strategies, to be aware of that isn't exactly 'elitism'"
No its not but...
Whats being said on these comments goes a little beyond questioning strategy and views. When you start saying that people are stupid because they buy a certain product that suits THEIR needs and analyzing the people the Co. chooses to be in their frackin commercials tells me its a little more personal than your dislike for a Co.s views and strategy.
"And yes it is possible for ALL players in a field to be annoying and disliked justifiably by people."
Based on what? I highly doubt you guys have met or know any of these people beyond seeing these tutorials, spending 5-10 min in a store talking to them. If what you say is true w/o any of the above being done or even beyond that it IS 'elitism'. Compare it to a race of people (black, white, hispanic) and if thats the attitude people take then we just went backward 40 years. Really what I've seen is more a mob mentality and people just piling on because they can. To point out only the negative and nothing positive is hater-ation. There has to be some bias there.
"If you are really a system admin I'm sure there are areas where you think all software solutions for it are lacking for instance, and if you are a normal person I'm sure you would not avoid saying that when asked."
Yes I'm not imaginary.
Yes they do lack often.
Yup I say something. Hence this is my second post.
"Personally I have plenty of criticism on all operating systems I tried, and on most all software packages, and I don't feel I'm wrong in observing flaws when there are flaws."
No you are not wrong and your second post was a good example of that. But did you read any of the other comments? Thats what I'm talking about. Getting worked up not about the OS but everything but.
Bottom line, guys its not that serious.
this guy is GAY !
Hope so
what is that intro song??
is apple a cult? they all wear black mock turlenecks with the sleeves partly pushed up and use their hands to talk. Its creeping me out.
The guy looks like Satan smiling only his lower teeth... scary the crap out of me.
