Leopard retail packaging revealed
It's not like you won't be seeing this tomorrow anyway, but just in case you can't wait another second to check out what Apple's OS X Leopard will look like on the shelf, well, here you go (short vid after the break). The company's trend of minimizing packaging is clearly at play here -- great for the critics but a little disappointing to those of us who remember when buying software meant getting ten discs in a huge box. So, are you impressed, or were you expecting more from Cupertino's award-winning designers?

I would have to say that I am excited about the recent success of apple and generally happy to hear about it however, a package is NOT news!!
Jon @ Oct 25th 2007 9:32AM
This is Engadget we are talking about. Remember all the nonsensical Iphone coverage? This will be similar.
BobTurbo @ Oct 25th 2007 9:51AM
I am sick of: packaging photos, keeping it real fake, any kind of rumors, comparisons to show that one product copied another, and prototypes of something that may or may not be released in 2050. All I care about is ACTUAL GADGETS that are or will be, released. Grrrrr, scrolling through ads and stupid crap like this annoys me.
Srsly, do they think we have no life?
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 10:01AM
You bothered reading, replying (generating traffic) and checking the ads (generating revenue). It's all that matters, my good sir.
ssuk @ Oct 25th 2007 10:10AM
Especially since anyone with a SHREAD of imagination could have pictured how the packaging would look for Leopard...
Jon @ Oct 25th 2007 10:24AM
@AlexP, ever heard of Adblock?
BobTurbo @ Oct 25th 2007 10:29AM
AlexP, I am not a sir - I am a cross-dressing transexual robot. Keeping customers happy is important and don't patronise me if I want to vent my anger.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 10:31AM
Yes, I know about it, but it's legality is questionable, to say the least, as advertising is what pays for the 'free' content you're getting, whether it's games, media coverage, or software.
By the way, you're still generating more interest and therefore more traffic (and so am I).
Mike Houston @ Oct 25th 2007 12:48PM
hey whiners, why did you click on the headline "Leopard retail packaging revealed" if you didn't want to read about it? If you really want Engadget NOT to do stories like this, then don't follow the links. I would imagine they cover things that appear to be popular among their readers.
And, I am interested in the packaging, albeit disappointed. All the photos on the back make it look like a microsoft box.
Jeff @ Oct 25th 2007 9:13AM
Be still my heart. /sarcasm
Well Im sure the macheads are disappointed they wont be getting a disc in a box.
Can you do a post about the shrink wrapping process too?
Oh pllllleeeeeaaaasseeee???
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:14AM
It's getting released at 6PM EST, right?
christapher @ Oct 25th 2007 10:18AM
6pm local, or you get it in the box of any new computer you buy all day (or so a birdy told me)
Jason @ Oct 25th 2007 9:14AM
Are you serious? Who gives a flippin crap about the box :ugh:
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:15AM
... Well, they did reveal Vista's.
Ellianth @ Oct 25th 2007 3:07PM
But the vista packaging was actually something special...
bob @ Oct 25th 2007 9:15AM
is it not? http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/31/vista-and-office-2007-boxes-revealed/
Deluxe @ Oct 25th 2007 9:16AM
OMG PACKAGING.
Proof that fanboys (of any company) can be aroused by anything.
Kizorblade @ Oct 25th 2007 9:17AM
"great for the critics but a little disappointing to those of us who remember when buying software meant getting ten discs in a hu..."
Please insert next disc please.
RyanTV @ Oct 25th 2007 9:17AM
it's not an arousal thing... it is a nice looking box though. I like the space theme. :)
Asher69 @ Oct 25th 2007 12:15PM
yeah... 'cause you know apple. They can't be satisfied with pretty mountains or beach scenes as their background... Their 'vista' has to be the whole frikkin' UNIVERSE!
*sigh*
Stop swinging the wang, Steve. Nobody's impressed. (even though I am wishing my antique G4 had the nuts behind it to actually run the new OS X...)
RedBull Runner @ Oct 25th 2007 1:11PM
your G4 should have the nuts to run leopard. If not officially, then waitabout 2 days after release for a workaround or similar method of installing... probbaly all that will be needed is a quick edit of an Info.plist
Tim @ Oct 25th 2007 9:18AM
Oh my gosh an Apple box!!!! BFD
PeteC @ Oct 25th 2007 9:19AM
Actually, I am at least. Was wondering if it would be released in a full-sized box or a smaller one, purely as I won't be in and it's a pain in the arse for me to get to a depo to collect it as I don't have a car. My new style iMac keyboard came through my postbox and I was hoping this would be able to as well.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:19AM
I wouldn't say it's near as original as the way the MS07 (Office, Vista) boxes open up and such, but the holographic feature looks pretty good.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:32AM
Nearly, not near**
bjrcboy @ Oct 25th 2007 10:42AM
Grammar nazi =D
Jimmie @ Oct 25th 2007 9:26AM
I like the way the X floats on the background. Pretty cool. Way better than vista's shitty box!
Jeff @ Oct 25th 2007 9:33AM
Vista's box is "shitty", but an X "floating" in the background just blows your mind?
1st year design student, right?
Jimmie @ Oct 25th 2007 9:42AM
Never said it blew my mind, but apparently someone commenting that they like something is new to you ;-) Jackass.
Douglas Brace @ Oct 25th 2007 9:27AM
Maybe this is just me over analyzing, but the packaging is significantly smaller than other retail boxes. It's about time that software manufacture gets rid of the extra packaging.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:36AM
As a gamer, I've always enjoyed large boxes filled with goodies.
I miss the old 90s software boxes. :(
Small boxes are indeed, more environmentally-friendly, more convenient and uh, less costly to transport, but I still miss the large boxes, nonetheless.
Optimus Rhyme @ Oct 25th 2007 9:29AM
Actually I've seen this before, and the disc too. If you watch all of the Leopard video guide on Apple.com they show you how easy it is to upgrade your mac. He has a Leopard box on the table next to the iMac and there is a clear shot of the disc going into the machine.
Now to get my time machine tattoo done on my nutsack and start practising writing OMG LEPRD!!! as fast as I can for when I go to the London Expo on Saturday whilst simultaneously trying not to get my iPhone nicked by a chav.
Good times people!
kodey @ Oct 25th 2007 9:37AM
Look! It's Shiny!!!
JL @ Oct 25th 2007 9:40AM
If I would buy a macbook pro on tomorrow friday will I get the new os on it?
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:42AM
I'm willing to bet that no.
But you can still get it for free (legally, directly from Apple).
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:47AM
Oooh wait, tomorrow... Um, yes... As long as you order it at 6PM estern :P
Sorry, I read your post too quickly.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 9:49AM
Eastern*. Man, am I failing my keyboard or is the keyboard failing me? :S
Yaphi @ Oct 25th 2007 10:00AM
If you go into an Apple Store for the Leopard event, all machine's will come with a Leopard disk. They will obviously have Tiger installed on them by default that night, but you will be able to stick the Leopard disk in at home and start anew.
RedBull Runner @ Oct 25th 2007 1:22PM
At checkout the cashier should give you a disk insert, unless the one you are buying already has an insert in it.
AmazingRobie @ Oct 25th 2007 9:41AM
Pretty cool. Pretty cool.
lolec @ Oct 25th 2007 9:47AM
I think its kinda poor :S You buy the ALL MIGHTY LEOPARD and it looks like a free demo or a recovery disc. It doesnt look that powerfull. Whats next a shitty download code?
Paul UK @ Oct 25th 2007 9:47AM
As i am a huge apple fan.. i still wish the box was a bit more bulky and looked more interesting.. although at least these boxes can be posted without having to sign for anything :-)...
Big up LPRD
Yaphi @ Oct 25th 2007 9:59AM
You must be one of the 67% on cnn.com that think saving our environment is impossible.
lolec @ Oct 25th 2007 10:24AM
Shure, a smaller box will save the planet.
AmazingRobie @ Oct 25th 2007 12:32PM
@lolec
"Shure, a smaller box will save the planet."
You truly are the genius among us aren't you. It's all about not compounding an already out of control problem. With the loads and loads of useless stuff that is created each and every second of each and every day all around the planet, what difference does the absence of a huge box that your only going to throw away anyway matter. Think about it.
At least it's not in a box made from non-biodegradable plastic like some other operating systems.
You clown hat.
Oskin @ Oct 25th 2007 12:39PM
Well at least its a star! Why would you need a bigger box?
Oskin @ Oct 25th 2007 12:43PM
*Start
Jons @ Oct 25th 2007 9:53AM
X-Box.
AlexP @ Oct 25th 2007 10:00AM
Can't be, the Xbox is f'ing huge!
TIB @ Oct 25th 2007 12:17PM
There isn't enough room in Space for the XBox.
