NEC has its own 2880x900 curved gaming display
We feel sorry for poor NEC. While everyone at CES is busy buzzing about Alienware's gorgeous curved DLP display (including us), NEC is quietly showing off its CRVD-42DWX+ display that's more or less identical: a 2880x900 (double WXGA+) panel with a contrast ratio of 10000:1. We're assuming they're both built by the same ODM, Ostendo, so hopefully some healthy competition will help bring one of these two beauties within your meager gaming budget. Unfortunately, like the Alienware model, there's no pricing or shipping information. Ogle some more pics in our gallery below.

Wow! That display truely is amazing. If you really like to see cool new gadgets like this, you should check out http://www.giftgadgetgateway.com . They have unique gift gadgets for practically everyone and, aside form a great selection of gadgets, they also have great healthy living and mind fitness electronics.
Wow, it's like 2 women wearing the same dress to a party, but one is skinny the other fat.
Except you're wrong.
I don't get it.
Should I like fat women now?
It's more comparable to 2 sexy women wearing the same dress, one made by Prada, the other by a no name brand, both sewn together by 8-year-old boys in Peru.
Come on, I don't think you can call Nec a "no-name" brand. It's been around for more than a hundred years and dwarves Alienware in terms of achievements.
yeah and fat women have their good things too, their into the kinky stuff for one!
How on earth can you call NEC a no-name brand? 100 years old and 40 times Alienware's revenue. Hmm.
I have NO problem with sexy twins wearing different clothes, or did you miss the point that the DNA is the same?
Hopefully this is still cheaper than a Kia. The cheaper the better... do they accept food stamps?
I tried to buy a lobster with my food stamps, the clerk just laughed at me. I wanted to name mine larry :(
TFSU lol
si
another feature of this display is that it widescales all the chicks in your porn collection to fat E.T looking babes
hey widescale = wide ass!! lmao
You're not good with the humor, are you Chris?
At least NEC shows it off in a race car game... makes more sense. (steeringwheel adapter? wtf... who actually buys those things?)
I like the idea, except for it being so thick on the backend...crt, bleh. And they really should fix those lines between displays.. you'd think they would have at LEAST matched the brightness and contrast on each one, makes the display edges even more noticeable.
except it isnt crt.
its dlp
woops, my bad.
when I thought "fat booty monitor" my old crt just popped into mind.
it seems easy to just get something by ODM's..... can i just call to overseas and get things branded with my own name?
the more I look at this thing (and the identical alienware product), the more I wonder if it will be a help or hinderance to FPS players.. sure objects on the screen are more apparent (e.g. enemies moving, etc.) but how about those static parts of your HUD at your peripheral? like the minimap/radar or your ammo levels and health? having to turn your head to check those things, takes your focus off of the threats on screen, which could pose a major problem when you are in a multiplayer environment....
any thoughts?
Well, if these monitors take off, it's likely that FPS games would be designed so that on extremely-wide screens, the HUD elements aren't right at the edges of the picture but probably limited to the inner two screens (or something along those lines).
You've never seen a triple-screen setup, have you?
They are amazing for FPS's. Usually people try and put the HUD elements on the middle monitor, ie. before the DOF changes and distorts them.
Well it seems from the 2 models and the demos that run on it that up indeed have those HUD elements way on the side.
And anybody that ever tried to run 2 monitors, or even one widescreen one, knows that waiting for gamemakers to support even very widespread things like widescreen can be a long long looong wait.
But hey, you got a hugeass display, that should count for something :)
Maybe this will encourage more game designers allow for repositioning of the HUD elements.
The NEC one will be cheaper cause Alienware always insanely overprices everything they sell...
Give me one good example of Alienware overchar.... oh wait.
Very Cool
It still has those lines that the Alienware prototype has though
hope this will be fixed also
I wish they made smaller versions. I can just fit a 20in widescreen on my desk.
A smaller version is called a 22" widescreen LCD.
Maybe he wants a curved 22" widescreen.
But will it bend?
Well duh, where do you think Alienware got it? or did you think they just magically started their own LCD factory.
i was thinking dlp but maybe...
this so beats that dell dual screen setup I saw a couple articles back or so.
What games will ever be compatible with that screen resolution, though? Not to mention graphics cards...
Good question, though many games allow changes to the FOV so you could use a smaller resolution but it would still work. Whatever the case, WSGF will have the solution: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/
Ummm...Nearly all of them?
That's like asking if any games or graphics cards will support widescreen monitors...
You know it's damn hard to run a recent game at decent rates at 2880 resolution, and as for 'all games have widescreen support', well clearly you don't have a widescreen, or you don't play games.
Dejavu?!
The biggest problem with these (this + alienwares, assuming they are the same) is not the size, but the technology. They use DLP projection. While fine for presentations and movies, they are not great for games. Some people see flashes of color when moving their eyes around the screen, and with a screen of that size, you will be moving your eyes a ton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLP#The_DLP_.22rainbow_effect.22_in_single-chip_systems
LCD's are still way better priced, and theres still a gap on this, so its not that much difference...
Where have you been. The rainbow effect has long been solved by adding 2 more color wheels and increasing their speeds. No DLP made in the last year has had the rainbow effect problem anymore.
Correction: This problem is reduced, not eliminated. I still see this with brand new projectors, and it is extremely aggravating. You shouldn't see it so much when it is a reasonably sized image, but if your sitting close to it like this, you will still see glances of it. It can be very annoying when you find yourself constantly spinning around in games because you thought you saw something significant.
Anyone ever think that maybe NEC is making it for Alienware? Because the tech is to damn similar to be out at the same time. Its just odd.
No, because Ostendotech is [making it for Alienware].
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/more-details-about-alienwares-awesome-curved-dlp-display/
this looks awesome, but i'll keep my dual 24" dell monitors. sure its not seamless, but there's only 1" gap between the two screens, and at 3840x1200, its a bit more high-rez :)
Now if it had dual DVI in to split it, and also run as a single display I would be sold.
The ever popular "Badge and Go" technique that Dellienware and NEC have. America the beautiful. So much for doing your own R+D.
This is gorgeous! I want this badly, this could be the ultimate gaming experience. DLP is already kicking ass, this is gonna blow them all out of the water. Those colors are so brilliant and pretty. This needs to come out now!
Why are people bitching about HUD element problems? If you're too retarded to be able to manually position it yourself with the .INI files within the game, you don't deserve to buy this monitor. Pretty much every game I can think of has an INI file that allows you to change the position of HUD elements.
