Casio's EX-F1 camera with 60fps burst and 1200fps video -- March 28th
Oh great lorf of frames per second shooters. Casio's Exilim Pro EX-F1 just snagged a ship date. It'll cost you ¥130,000 (tax inclusive) when it hits on March 28th in Japan. Still, we expect many people will be swayed by this 6 megapixel novelty with the ability to burst at 60fps while shooting up to 1200fps video. Still no US or European release where it's expected to pop for $999 (pre tax), but it can't be long now. [Via I4U]

Wait... How many FPS do the Mythbusters' camera record?
lol grammar.
Nietzche @ Mar 12th 2008 5:36AM
Quite likely a lot more.
But that's quite likely reflected in the price as well.
Mic2000 @ Mar 12th 2008 5:51AM
I doubt if the mythbusters camera is faster then 1200 fps. But I gues the image quality of 1200 fps would be less good then the mythbuster camera ;)
Rik @ Mar 12th 2008 9:03AM
The kind of camera that is used for the really fast stuff is more like in the 1*10^6fps range.
Often not digital btw, but a large circulating drum with photofilm in it instead. (light is projected at the end)... then you can film an explosion really well for instance.
Blackster @ Mar 12th 2008 4:56AM
who is this lorf you're talking about? do i have to know him? ;)
j_g_puff @ Mar 12th 2008 5:55AM
Praise the Lorf for blessing us with this juicy hunk o' tech!

On the sixth day the Lorf created the EX-F1, and he saw that it was bad-ass

My friends all have iPhones, I must make amends,
Oh Lorf, won't you buy me a Casio Ex-F1
Jesse S @ Mar 12th 2008 12:32PM
Well, Lorf likes cat ears...among other things...
:(

I think its the Dark Lorf that sits on his dark throne

Remember, in order to actually have enough bandwidth to record those 1200fps, the camera only captures at 336x96! Slower fps requires less bandwidth per frame, and so can be recorded at higher resolutions, I assume up to 60fps at 6 megapixels (3038 X 2012) which isn't too shabby!
Barry @ Mar 12th 2008 5:16AM
Wow, that's a really cheap hi-def video camera if you drop all the photos into an avi. Like a poor man's Red One.
j_g_puff @ Mar 12th 2008 5:32AM
It'll only burst 60fps (or 1200fps): that kind of framerate takes up so much bandwidth that it will only have time to write it to a fast buffer. After that you'll have to wait while it copies it all to slower, larger memory. My bet is you'll only get a couple of seconds at these high framerates.
So, this would make a great video camera, as long as you like your video in 2 second chunks.
(Incidentially, 6MP is not high def - it's gigadef)
Chip @ Mar 12th 2008 7:28AM
If you're looking for a "poor man's" HD video camera, check the Canon HF10. (will release in April) Full HD recorded to internal flash media. It's actually even smaller than this camera. Price is only $100 more. Oh and records via 17Mbs AVCHD which I'm sure this camera does not.

Chip,
That would be interesting to see a side to side with a real camcorder. I like the casio for high-def recording for three main reasons:
1. Ergonomics of putting the right hand on the hand grip and left hand on the barrel.
2. Left hand controls the big focusing ring.
3. Great big sensor is much larger than the one in the Canon, perhaps this will give us better low light; I hope so.
Note that the Casio also has a microphone shoe and a microphone jack. The casio records in a more computer file friendly format (MOV H.264), although I don't know the bandwidth.
A bunch of camera guys would like to see a side to side comparo with an SLR camera too, for what it's worth. This should be a great hybrid camera, never mind the silly high-speed frames.

Use your brain though :P
2 seconds at 1200 fps is 2400 frames.. /30 (fps) = 80
So you could feasibly get over a minute of high speed footage

LORF?
ethana2 @ Mar 12th 2008 6:51AM
Somebody fill us in; what are we missing?
webon @ Mar 12th 2008 12:53PM
Lorf
A term to really annoy pseudo-christians in cahtrooms and forums etc. "Lorf" instead of "Lord". Drives 'em pshyco! Lorf is also the name of the god of typos.
"Come on, everybody, let's Praise the Lorf!"
thankyou urban dictionary
engaget_Robin @ Mar 12th 2008 5:56AM
The japanese page translation says this: " Women's sports models such as high-speed continuous shooting scenes can be shot in the implementation of Council experience." -- so we will see lots of slow-motion upskirt shots of sporty female government employees?
LondonConsultant @ Mar 12th 2008 8:13AM
There's an issue with the number of lumens you need to capture at anything like a 1200 frame rate - get out your specialist lighting rigs...
tallgrave @ Mar 12th 2008 9:17AM
It's powerful!
Casio's Exilim Pro EX-F1
I want it.
Nish Vamadevan @ Mar 12th 2008 10:41AM
I'd rather get a 450D and put some lens on... Much better IMO...
LloydChiro @ Mar 12th 2008 11:29AM
The 450D doesn't take 1080i movies, nor does it have a microphone input.
I'f you would like a camera only, though, I would generally agree with you. At this point, an SLR would be cheaper.
Gary Combs @ Mar 12th 2008 11:39AM
Don't look to get this camera for the 1200 fps video. Look to get it for shooting 60 fps still pictures and the 300 fps videos at a nice resolution. And thank you iPhoneEngadget for giving us some news.
sLm4ever @ Mar 14th 2008 5:26PM
shit...
GShooter @ Apr 15th 2008 11:14PM
Just played with this bad ass camera and I am a huge Canon fan, but this thing was amazing! I shot in burst mode at 30FPS and I was amazed on how good the pictures where, then I bumped it up to 60fps and they where equally as good. Now if thing will allow add on lenses for further distance we have a winner.... If your kids are in action sports or you shoot wild life this is the camera you most likely won't miss anything with. The video quality was very good as well....
