Enermax laptop cooling station beats the heat with an 8-inch fan
There are laptop cooling pads and there are laptop cooling pads, and we've got to hand it to Enermax for building the biggest and silliest one we've ever seen. The Aeolus cooling pad features just a single fan, but it's an 8.66-inch diameter monster, capable of reducing temps by 22 degrees Celsius (39.6 degrees Fahrenheit) while only putting out 20dB of noise. On top that, it's got integrated blue LEDs for additional nerd cred -- although we're wondering how you're supposed to actually see them while your furnace of a laptop is parked on top. Should be around now for about $70, we hear.

Can also be used as a personal fan to keep yourself cool while not using laptop :-P
Shinigami @ May 21st 2008 9:54AM
Unless you hold it all the time, its useless to keep you cool and quiet ;)
And if you hold it yourself all the time, it makes you ineffective and not-working xD
Blaine Oliver @ May 21st 2008 11:51AM
I thought that fan was some fancy print design, then i realised its a whopping fan. I think i need some glasses.
SteveS @ May 21st 2008 1:30PM
Call me crazy but putting an 8 inch fan near my crotch isn't my idea of fun...
thatrotierkid @ May 21st 2008 9:30AM
How is that thing silly? I think its sexy as hell! I totally want that. Plus 22C is amazing especially at that low of a volume.
And you see the lights in the same way that you see the lights under someones car. Its not designed to sign up at you but below as accent lights.
Zach @ May 21st 2008 9:34AM
One could argue that hell isn't very sexy.
Idlemind @ May 21st 2008 9:44AM
I worked there for a spell... its not.
IT-Accountant @ May 21st 2008 9:33AM
At least this thing isn't going to have any offspring- I mean with a laptop that hot parked on it all day, this thing is almost sure to be the last of its kind.
Josh @ May 21st 2008 9:34AM
but can it cool down the mba...?
dum dum dum...
Lein @ May 21st 2008 9:40AM
Damnit, why the stupid LEDs! I just got finished ripping every illuminated fan out of my desktop and server box, and now they come along with a laptop cooler that actually COOLS, but with RICE.
Lein @ May 21st 2008 9:42AM
Ooo wow, just read the specs page and almost shed a tear:
"LED Indicator 5 blue LEDs with ON/OFF switch"
In for one!
rock99rock @ May 21st 2008 9:43AM
Its cool and edible?
nikster @ May 21st 2008 8:49PM
@Lein: Thanks for that bit of info, I might consider this if the LEDs can be turned off. The last thing I need in my life is more tacky blue LEDs. I hate those things with a passion.
Pochi @ May 21st 2008 9:42AM
This is the step before just putting your laptop on top of a huge box fan.
Seth @ May 21st 2008 9:46AM
your fears realized...

rock99rock @ May 21st 2008 9:44AM
Skrew this thing, im building my own with a ceiling fan.
Shinigami @ May 21st 2008 9:52AM
I somehow think my laptop just needs a big piece of thick aluminum under it to work cool and quiet. Not a 20db monster-size fan.
d00b @ May 21st 2008 9:52AM
For some strange reason, at first glance I thought the brand name was Areola. Damn good sublim advertising.
kal326 @ May 21st 2008 10:08AM
Seriously what laptop did they test that they dropped the temp BY 22C or 71F? Better yet, what was the original temp and what was the measured temp using the cooler? Laptop going from 121F to 50F?
Frankenstein Black @ May 21st 2008 10:09AM
Hum! How can a rig moder like me fit that into the side of a hi flow case like this?

If you had to ask, then you're obviously not a very GOOD rig moder (SIC).
Pedantic @ May 21st 2008 10:13AM
Anyone notice the math problem here? Cooling something 22 degrees C is only a difference of 39.6 degrees F. Still pretty amazing.
Vidit Bhargava @ May 21st 2008 10:24AM
22 deg C = 71.6 deg F...that is correct
but yes...when it comes to calculating the difference you cant really say how much it would be
hohmes @ May 21st 2008 10:25AM
Good catch. They brilliantly (actually blindly) converted 22° C to 71° F which would be correct if 22° C was the temperature. The problem is its the change in temperature.
gt-racer @ May 21st 2008 10:45AM
That should have been labeled 22 c⁰
cromer @ May 21st 2008 2:42PM
Here's the math, unless I'm mistaken.
Say your laptop is 100F.
100F = 37.778C
37.778C - 22C = 15.778C
15.778C = 60.4F
100F - 60.4F = 39.6F
So a 22C change to the original 100F temperature would cool it down to 60.4F. A difference of 39.6F...kinda like what was stated in the article.

i need this thing. i have a dell inspiron 9100 that is always on and hot as hell. the cooling pad i have now helps but still doesnt get the job done...
Vidit Bhargava @ May 21st 2008 10:27AM
my laptop needs some more vents :|
I dont know how could toshiba design a machine without proper vents for the memory and hdd compartment
the processor vents are proper though but it doesnt help that much
gijs @ May 21st 2008 10:48AM
This thing features a completely safe Take of mode. Now you can level yourself with the pro''s. Just Take with your cooler....
Total overkill.
richard @ May 21st 2008 10:49AM
Humm,
It could sport a 4 port USB Hub, so we wouldn't loose a port in the equation !!
By the way, you need to connect it to the portable so it can work, so for those who they could use it without a laptop ....
Cheers,
R.
eddy @ May 21st 2008 11:23AM
Ehhh, $70 is a little too rich for my blood. I have an Antec cooler being used with my Inspiron 5100 right now (plus I8kfanGUI to run my fans at max) and it holds pretty steady between 35-40°C. Plus, I can't see this big fan realistically dropping my temp into the 20s.
Don @ May 21st 2008 11:45AM
This is a nice piece.... for me to poop on. J/k if I had $70 to "blow" I would buy one. Pun intended.
xValentine @ May 21st 2008 1:04PM
$70(w/o tax and shipping) is overkill for a laptop cooler.
Oh well, if anyone want's it, it's available now at performance-pcs.com
