Computex awash in Atom-based netbooks, VIA's Nano a no-show
Man, we've waited so long for Intel's Silverthorne to become Atom to become product that we're feeling a bit misty at the sight of all those Atom-based netbooks pictured above. Intensified by the fact that VIA has apparently come to the show without a single Nano-based netbook of its own. Hold tight while we await official word from Dell about their "mini-Inspiron" netbook expected sometime today.
Update: We found a VIA Nano device!

I hate you all.

aaaaw....
:(
did you see how small the screen was on that gigabyte? OMFG!
"Netbook" is in every sentence in this post. That term was very scarcely ever used with sub-notebooks until recently - on Engadget.
What's up Engadget? Are you trying to be responsible for the sticking of a tech-term?
Have any of the new cheap sub notebooks a trackpoint?
I think this is a selling point for me.
All of your netbooks are belong to the default Windows XP background.
That made me giggle..
have an upmod chap!
Heh.. reminds me of the whole Origami fiasco. Tell me why these computers won't bomb like the UMPCs before?
You know. And get shoved aside by high end phones.
@Mike,
i don't like to be abusive. So I won't.
But you are such a donkey (idiot - lmao). What high end phone hasa shoved aside a UMPC ? High end phones are just phones. UMPC's were trail blazers appealing to a narrow target audience. But they had their place.
What high end phone has pushed aside a UMPC ? I mean the HTC touch was pretty well the best phone out there, pionering technology and a comprehensive user interface, but in no way does it replace a UMPC. You are such a donkey (idiot! - lol).
For sure, you may be right in a way, that when Android comes to market, that it probably will dominate the Cell phone market. It will certainly put an end to the apple product, and some say that apple itself will fold sometime in the next two years after Android's release.
Android will most likely venture out into the netbook os arena.
Yes, you may have a point in so far as this is probably the end of Apple. OK so for a complete Donkey (idiot - ) , you are right about that.
As a final point, answering your question directly, this product line responds directly to the tech community's stated desires;
Full size key board
4 Hour battery life - user changeable
User changeable hard drive
2.5 lb weight
RJ45 Ethernet connectivity
Under-the-arm portability (my bluetooth-phone will be in my pocket)
under $700
Over sized Phone:
No real key board
Junk battery life when running any kind of activity
Limiting storage space
2.5 lb weight - Yep
Connectivity - nope no RJ45
Portable - yep, but more loseable
Under $700 - yes, but no value for money and requires on-going monthly charges.
But you are right, I agree, this is probably the end of Apple. Good point
VIA's nano a Yes-Show:

AMD also a Yes-Show with a tiny netbook:

Chippy
These small sub-notes wont become popular, or better until Apple comes out with one, and these guys have to start copying them - but not really copying them since they would have already been out for year... but wont matter because no one pays attention. And so on and so forth, and what have you.
Basically some wont care unless there is an Apple logo on one. Didn't expect that type of thinking from people like that. Not at all....
And besides, Apple cant make one of these. Apple fanatics have made it clear that if a company has already made one of these, any company that makes one in the future will be a "me too" copycat wannabe that cant think of anything original.
That promised poll hasn't happened yet has it?
Looks like engadget has decided on netbook all of its own accord, from recent posts anyway. Should have known.
Personally i think it's time for the revolution.
When apple brings out a £200 netbook I'll eat an iphone.
C'mon apple I wanna see what happens when lcd shatters in some-ones mouth!
Intel has officially defined all the classes with their own terms and I'm guessing Engadget is just running with it:
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080602-atom-everywhere-intels-mid-netbook-and-nettop-strategy.html
Netbook is the EEE PC, Nettop will be the EEE Box.
Intel can shove their net* terms up their @$$. I wish engadget would stop using that dreadful name for sub-notebooks, mini-laptops or whatever.
Well with all these things being so small, you're bound to miss one!
Stop calling them netbooks! Please. I don't mind the fact that intel made it up it just doesn't make as much sense as ULCPC, personally I've always called them UMPC's though I know that is "incorrect" technically. But they are ultra mobile! Very much so. UMULCPC? No that's silly. Though I do understand where netbook comes from; them being a portable internet box. But it just doesn't feel right. "Netbook" is the last thing that comes to mind when defining the eeePC, the 2go PC though, on the other hand is almost the complete opposite. It's just not as svelte. It does look like the older computers (that some complain about) and netbook seems to describe it perfectly. Anyone agree? Disagree? Reasons?
Oh boy. I want to be there SO badly. I only got to play with in passing a eeePC 701 at London's Heathrow Airport.
