You'd think that after
begging for, and apparently
receiving, a free iPhone last year, Stephen Colbert would have figured out how to hold the damn thing by now. Katie Cotton's not going to toss you an iPhone 3G freebie acting like this. Oh wait, fake television news isn't real? The "t" is silent? Oh never mind.
[Thanks, Jason]

But how do we know he isn't doing it on purpose...?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jun 11th 2008 10:12AM
With that man I'm not surprised by anything.
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 6:51AM
I've watched colbert for ages and only a short while ago realised the word 'colbert' is not in common use in english, weird how that goes.
In this country it's what you call the type of jacket that comes with a suit named after a french politician (minister of finance) Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1614-1683).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Baptiste_Colbert
Little quote: "He achieved a reputation for his work of improving the state of French manufacturing and bringing the economy back from the brink of bankruptcy. ... Historians note that, despite Colbert's efforts, France actually became increasingly impoverished because of the King's excessive spending on wars."
So much for originality george bush.. ;)
bohsocks @ Jun 11th 2008 9:59AM
I like stories.
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 1:53PM
Haha, yeah I rambled on a bit didn't I, but I ended with a slightly funny jab at bush though.
Ghen @ Jun 11th 2008 3:29PM
I liked it =)

Wishlist for next-gen iPhone:
A "This side up" sign somewhere
cr @ Jun 11th 2008 7:12AM
The EDGE iPhone has a black bottom making it obvious when it was upside down. The 3G iPhone is all black on the back, so now it is less obvious that someone is holding it upside.
There actually was a "this side up" indicator (more like "this side down"), but nobody used it.
Magnificen7 @ Jun 11th 2008 8:52AM
Yeah, because the orientation of the Apple logo changes. C'mon guys.
hockeycheck @ Jun 11th 2008 6:55AM
the news is real, he talks about actual things that happen... he just makes fun of their stupidity at the same time.
A war with Colbert? is that something you really want to start just because you're jealous he got a free iPhone??
c'mon now... i'm sure you've gotten tons of freebies
Andir3.0 @ Jun 11th 2008 7:07AM
I'm sure Colbert could give two shits about this site. And I'm sure he's going to leave it at that. This is a pathetic attempt from Engadget to grab hits and ad revenue.
Ghen @ Jun 11th 2008 3:40PM
Engadget should remake 'Blogging in Korean' or challenge him to a blogoff.
Ian @ Jun 11th 2008 7:08PM
@Andir3.0
wow way to be mister negative today. Who cares if they are trying to get hits, thats how they stay alive. if it wasn't for us engadget wouldn't be here at all.
anyway lol to colbert funny man, although sometimes i can't tell if hes joking or not. which leads me to think he is one damn good actor. o well
xValentine @ Jun 11th 2008 6:55AM
Now it's gonna be much harder for celebs to hold the iPhone the correct way.
Bobs @ Jun 11th 2008 7:02AM
Thomas, its a comedy show, its ment to be laughed at, if it brings an angery face to your face, then dont watch it.
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 7:09AM
There's just a percentage of people who don't get sarcasm and related humour and to them it's frustrating to see it I gather.
Colbert himself has the same strange averse reaction to wikipedia though so I guess we all have those quirks.
Thomas Ricker @ Jun 11th 2008 7:29AM
uh gents, my post is full of sarcasm.
Thomas
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 9:24AM
OK, 'other people's sarcasm' then :)
I just notice that there are a lot of letters on theinquirer.com for instance of americans who can't handle that they have rumours there and make jokes and show their preferences, and rather than taking that into account while reading articles they seem all confused and then angry about it, so my impression is that some people really react bad if it's not black or white.
There's also youtubes from people complaining about sarcasm vids because they simply don't get them.
If you are not affected with that syndrome I apologize though.

They had the whole damn keynote on italian TV, and excerpts on all news shows all over europe, so it's not engadget who's the only 'victim' to the PR push of apple.
DoctaDJones @ Jun 11th 2008 7:42AM
Stupid Engadget.
Reporting on things people are interested in and want to comment on. What are they thinking?
Steffen Jobbs @ Jun 11th 2008 8:45AM
Every major and minor news syndicate around the world had topics on the iPhone. Although I'm not sure that should come as a surprise. What is surprising is that Engadget keeps getting slandered for pushing the iPhone. There are people that are just interested in the iPhone. What else can be said? Google search engine showed the internet was flooded with iPhone articles.
WTF! It is Engadget's fault they can't grab any attention with the announcement of the ZunePhone?
Ian @ Jun 11th 2008 7:11PM
umm relevant. as in things that are similar to this post. it has iphone tag, therefore it finds other posts with iphone tags. wow buddy
Riddle @ Jun 11th 2008 7:30AM
1. In some areas reception is really bad and you can’t hear what the other person is talking.
2. In movies and tv shows celebs are holding the iPhone upside down because it looks cooler with glowing screen and onscreen controls. Have you looked at it when in sleep-mode? It looks dead / turned off.
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 9:26AM
Plus now by holding it upside down: free ad on engadget!!
trumpton @ Jun 11th 2008 7:40AM
Phew! After the recent onslaught of iPhone posts I was fearing that Engadget may have run out of p*ss weak excuses to keep endlessly promoting the handset on their front page, but they've come up trumps again.
Great work guys! This is the gadget news that matters!
Steffen Jobbs @ Jun 11th 2008 8:30AM
Don't get your knickers in a twist. As soon as your beloved Zunephone is announced they'll give it an article or two just for you.
Besides, everyone that matters in this world will eventually be using an iPhone, so you might as well get used to seeing them and hearing about them.
ian9outof10 @ Jun 11th 2008 7:49AM
Ha! Even brilliant Colbert can't hold his phone the right way up. Ludicrous!
Ian @ Jun 11th 2008 7:19PM
it must be your picture but i totally pictured stuie saying that.
superted @ Jun 11th 2008 8:05AM
was hoping for the video of it!
UK doesn't get the Colbert Report on TV, we're stuck with edited versions of the Daily Show.. booooh!
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 9:27AM
Get internet.
Richard Walker @ Jun 11th 2008 7:28PM
haha yeah 'get Internet' as wwhat said.
there's such a thing called torrents... I'd look the up if I were you, try utorrent (for PC) or xtorrent (for Mac) and then use eztv for the actual torrents!
I download colbert all the time from it.
OnlyShawn @ Jun 11th 2008 8:14AM
me: "the 't' is silent?....'elevision??" .........AH!!!
frozo @ Jun 11th 2008 8:16AM
Ive had the iPhone for a year now and I STILL pick the damn thing up the wrong way! :) I will definitely have issues with the new one.
Some Kid @ Jun 11th 2008 8:31AM
heh he is funny so he can do what he wants with his electronics
and that brings us to tonights word......
sarcasm
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 9:30AM
Hmm, it's how I feel though, he's funny so it doesn't matter he holds it upside down during a joke because you know he's not really talking to someone anyway, that's part of the joke, whereas in TV shows that are dramatic it ruins the suspension of disbelieve a bit.
PSUtechie185 @ Jun 11th 2008 9:19AM
For those of you who didn't catch the sarcasm, how about reading twice before inserting your keyboard & mouse along with your foot in your mouth?
just an observation.
PS: We'll see how many upsidedown 3G's will be on TV, I'll go with plenty.
tom @ Jun 11th 2008 9:53AM
and we will all know exactly just how many celebrities are caught holding a phone upside down because engadget will be there to 'front page' every incident
Prokanda @ Jun 11th 2008 9:27AM
he was "begging a free iphone"?
I think that's "begging for".
how do all of these mistakes make it through? seems like at least one common sense proof-read would be useful...
Wwhat @ Jun 11th 2008 9:31AM
Well perhaps we are the proofreaders, you gotta outsource.
farinasa @ Jun 11th 2008 9:48AM
he probably did, the brain skips over words like "it", "to" and "for". besides, the website is in blog style and is sarcastically humorous throughout, can you truly expect ZERO mistakes?
doobster @ Jun 11th 2008 10:00AM
eh... what next... making fun of Colbert for using the fatty iPod nano as a postage stamp...? apple/apple fanboys shud thank Colbert for free advertising on national TV...
Ricardo Torres @ Jun 11th 2008 10:08AM
I'm actually not a fan of Aple at all and the concept of AppleZealots having to thank Colbert for anything Apple related makes no sense at all.
Jeremy @ Jun 11th 2008 12:18PM
No Colbert No!! don't hold the precious Iphoney upside down. Engadget will get En-raged because they went three posts without mentioning their beloved I-phone. Let's rename Engadget to Iphone fan boyz. I used to be a fan of this site but it's getting pretty redonculous how often they have to mention the iphone. Alright in truth I'm just angry that Korea will never get the Iphone. I'm going mad as a cow right now. Where's my fracken Iphone Korea?
Jeremy @ Jun 11th 2008 12:20PM
You'd think that after begging for, and apparently receiving, a free iPhone last year, Jealous are we???????????? Stephen Colbert would have figured out how to hold the damn thing by now. " Ah smells of sacriledge" How do you hold your Iphone? Katie Cotton's not going to toss you an iPhone 3G freebie acting like this. Oh a little name dropping? Oh wait, fake television news isn't real? The "t" is silent? Oh never mind. Oh fake gadget news isn't real the "En" is silent? Come on Time Warner robots your site's for kids.
j. @ Jun 11th 2008 2:00PM
Phil Sebben FTW.... just cant 'scape that AOL TimeWarner grip.
ha haaa.
Mike @ Jun 11th 2008 2:06PM
Wow! The Colbert Report is probably the worst show ever, I don't see what the big deal is about this show its completely boring and not funny.
Mike Bertolino @ Jun 11th 2008 3:33PM
ha, i might be comedy central thing. hodgeman had it upside down when he had one on the daily show.
