Solar-powered, glowing flower pot does just that
There are all sorts of ways to tech-up your plants, be they fake or real. In this case, Firebox's solar-powered pot takes in the sun's energy during the day in order to glow at night. A solar cell is placed in the sun and connects to a ground spike with a 9.8-foot wire which then powers the color-changing flower pot. Could be an interesting -- or gaudy -- addition to your yard depending on your scheme. Available now for about $40.

Those are actually pretty cool. For an apartment balcony this would be a nice way of adding a touch of gaudy ambience!
bjrcboy @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:24PM
If one had the proper backyard/patio area this might actually be pretty neat to have.
With fake plants of course, I don't know about anyone else but I seem to of inherited my mothers curse to some how kill every plant I touch...
DefPo3t @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:29PM
actually my mother had a green thumb, it was peopl.......*crashing noise*...*screams*..*silence*........................................................................*roommate comes in* "OMG someone call 911"
DWells55 @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:29PM

"A solar cell is placed in the sun"
That must be difficult.
Reader @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:49PM
Yeah they call it 40 bucks, but in reality you know it's gonna cost at least a hundred mil to install it properly. I bet they only let you use their propriety space transportation too, bastards.
TA @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:37PM
"...with a 9.8-foot wire"
but not if the sun's only 9.8 feet away.
Ghen @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:01AM
I had to read that sentence a good 4 times before it finally sunk in what he was trying to say.
Garst @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:42PM
These would look nice around an in-ground pool
Garst @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:59PM
Actually, having them around a hot tub inside a private shed with aromas and nature sounds would be even better. Put the in the window or whatever and you're good to go.
Bill @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:24AM
@Garst
Generally, anyone living or recreating in a shed has trouble eating corn on the cob, and plays a mean banjo. I've never met anyone who keeps a hot tub in a shed, and I imagine any who do end up calling a crawlspace home, before a grisly end.
CraziestGadgets.com @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:47PM
do the plants get confused and start growing downwards towards the pots?
jtgd @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:51PM
They fail to mention that this is bad for the plants.
Plants need dark at night.
schmitty338 @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:59PM
Sure, whatever you want, birthday boy...
schmitty338 @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:01PM
@jtgd,
...they also fail to mention that the lamp is likely not a UV lamp and thus will neigh affect the growth of said plants one bit.
Dan @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:38PM
@schmitty338
Thought it would be cool to have a UV-emitting, cancer-causing flowerpot right?
I think so at least....
Onetruebill @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:40PM
You Said "THUS" and "NEIGH" in the same post.
You owe me a new geek meter, you just broke the old one.
steveo @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:23AM
It would be better if they were just made from glo-in-the-dark material.
Jenny @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:40AM
Mosquito attractors. Awesome.
lance @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:54AM
Well I guess you just designed a new version, the bug zapper glowing flower pot. if you could somehow make the dead bugs become fertilizer that would just be down right money making.
Cory @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:41AM
grow Venus fly traps
envisionjc @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:59AM
If anything these pots would make the plants grow faster. It's the visible spectrum, not UV that induces plant growth, particularly the blue and red lighting. Plants do not necessarily need darkness as the Calvin cycle is dependent upon the energies gathered from light.
Biochemistry is fun!
phanbouy @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:40AM
...they do need darkness to flower
phanbouy @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:40AM

BratPAQ @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:02AM
darkness to flower? so that implies wheres theres lamp post, theres no flower? think again
phanbouy @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:07PM
hmm.. well i know certain plants wont flower unless they register a certain consecutive amount of darkness
janph76 @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:00AM
Wow I'd love to have one......would look nice in front of the house.
toysandme @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:04AM
You should be able to get the same effect with some glow-in-the-dark paint.
davkoh @ Jun 23rd 2008 6:45AM
wow, this really is interesting. Its cool, but not very useful. I can imagine fine dining restaurants having a few of these here and there. Xp
