D-Link updates DNS-323 NAS unit with BitTorrent client
D-Link's DNS-323 is already a pretty capable unit with FTP, UPnP AV, iTunes, and print server support, but it's getting even more flexible today with the addition of an official BitTorrent client that'll run independently of your computer. It's certainly not the first NAS we've seen to include everyone's fave copyright, ah, re-appropriation app, but it's certainly one of the cheapest -- you can snag it for under $200 from most retailers.[Via Crowdedbrain]

You wouldn't steal a baby.
Remember people, piracy is a crime.
Of course this would only be used for legal data transfer anyway right.
The RIAA doesn't care if you download files you actually pay for. They'll sue you anyway.
I'm actually downloading a copy of Halo PC for my new laptop, because I can't find my cd, no lie.
Shut up.
Having rights tied to physical media is getting more and more ridiculous.
No actually I would steal a baby. They can be quite valuable, especially overseas.
totally joking!! please don't show up at my door mr FBI!!
Oh puhleeze...
What nonsense. Are you on MediaDefender's viral P2P anti-piracy comment whoring patrol now or something?
you've lost your rights to your V for Vendetta avatar
"getting even more flexible today"
You mean a few weeks ago? I've been running this firmware for a while now. Even the press release you link to is quite old.
Well it has "Nas" in the name so I must buy it!
nice toaster
Only problem? Where's the slots?
@PCIV:
Didn't you hear? You have to torrent the bread to this toaster before you can toast it.
There's a new bread tracker in the Ukraine. Very limited invite codes. PayPal me a dollar and I'll slip you one :)
hope they release the VHS and DVD recorder version soon
I wonder if it applies to the DNS-313. There is no changelog for the firmware released 18.06
We've in fact nicknamed the thing "The Toaster", though it is actually smaller than a conventional toaster.
Do some relatively minor hacks and you have a linux box on your hands, enough to run a basic web server, mail etc.
Nice little NAS, but there are some niggling little faults that could use patching through firmware updates.
But the firmware came out on May 13th. This isn't really new, is it?
To OP: "Remember people, piracy is a crime"
Says the guy with a V for Vendetta avatar.
Yep, thats how you guessed it was sarcasm :D ...maybe I should have done a tag...
I'd like to point out 'v for vendetta' is a movie and owned by a moviecompany who are the mother of MPAA, in short having that movie-industry-fabricated sign can't be really see as some protest can it?
Although the writer might have a message, but he didn't design that logo, which is basically a variation on the anarchy logo anyway.
Mind you you could see it as a protest to use a no-doubt trademarked logo without permission I guess ;)
anyone know how you would run peerguardian on this
Just bought the DNS-323 last night (July 2008)...early thoughts.
Hardware installation couldn't have been easier...seriously...swing off the front plate, slide the drive in, close the door. I had a harder time finding the 'on' switch which is in the front, not the back.
The CD utility 'Easy Start' is nice but I would have preferred to have seen it installed on the PC or completely web-based. No biggy...just copied the updated program file to my PC and created a shortcut. However, for most Newbies it's an inconvenience.
Flashed the firmware but the Bittorrent client is a real disappointment. No encryption so the download speed is dismal (haven't got anything better than 60 down and 15 upstream (I can often get sustained (400/90) with my regular server connection. Tweaking the router helped a bit.
Apparently an updated client can be added but I don't have the specifics yet.
Drive throughput is pretty good - easily saturates a 100mbps ethernet connection. I'll try it on my gigabit network and post the results here from some benchmarking tests (e.g. Sandra/HD Tach).
If anyone has something concrete on the torrent speed issue please post it here.
