nice collection engadget, thanks for the read
I may hate vista as much as a dog hates a damn annoying cat, but you will be remembered. You were a great man, and everyone thinks the same.
uh, no... he (and microsoft) were the very definition of middle of the road. a shrewd businessman, yes. but otherwise, not anything I would call "great."
Well the fact is that he brought a great deal of technology forward to a lot of people. He made what .. 90% of the industry? That alone I think grants him the title of being 'Great'
Chacha, if you want to thank anyone, thank IBM. They created a PC, at a time when Apple was busy suing Apple II clone makers, that was designed to use standard parts, and it was openly copied by Compaq and many other companies. The choice of MS DOS was a last minute toss up, and I think we all know (even Gates) that Microsoft software in general is not the best.
Yes, IBM, lets thank them...............while we are at it lets thank them for supplying the Nazi's with the equipment to keep track of what was going on in the concentration camps ....................they continued to carry on helping even after they knew for sure what was going on there.
Yes, IBM was guilty of that, 63 years ago, as were many other companies that are still around today.
Somehow I doubt the people who were selling machines to the Nazis also invented the IBM PC. I'm not saying it should be forgotten, but with your attitude we might as well condemn the entire human race. Let's not forget the US turned away Germany's expelled people before they were killed, and various other tidbits we should probably not be getting into on a gadget blog.
Godskitchen
It's always Nazi's this, and Nazi's that with you kids these days.
What about all the good things Hitler did?
Volkswagens, winning the Olympics, adding nutmeg into brownies....
How about he was a great man because he not only helped shaped the computer industry, but he didn't spend all the money on himself and helped others.
hexoDAT64, you can't really name too many high profile billionaires who didn't do the same thing, and a lot of their work has been disingenuous (they used to give PCs to developing countries, but they had to run MS software and were reliant on them; often the computers didn't even support the local language.. with open source software, people could customize and get involved in development and not be beholden to a distant company). And also watching Gates try to berate hard working researchers to work faster, for his own glory, is pretty unappetizing. And let's not forget those billions were gained through illegal monopolistic and anti competitive practises. But ultimately, this is a gadget blog, so if we're talking about "greatness," it should have something to do with tech.
for gods sake huh, let it go.
Who would be a great man for you? just because he is a ruthless business man he's not great?
IvanD, a great man (person) is someone who deserves to be remembered centuries from now for something great they did. Not Bill Gates.
Huh, you still didn't answer IvanD's question. All you said is that a great person is someone who does something great. How do you define great? And what makes you think your definition is the right one? Does participating in questionable business tactics invalidate all the ither good things Bill has done, such as his charities and such? Does a "great" person, in your view, have to be perfect? Just wondering...
Conclusion: If you have a lot of money, regardless of how you act with it (a lot of this stuff was wayyy before Bill became a philanthropist) people will like you.
that makes sense
Disagree. How many people here like Steve Jobs? Not that many, this board is loaded up to the top with Apple haters. I actually happen to like Bill Gates personally, I have a lot of respect for his foundation and what he does with it.
Thanks for the great reads. Bill Gates is a great man. I will always hate monkey boy ballmer, but I'll remember you Gates, and so will everyone else.
damn! I thought the comment system didn't put up my post, so I put up another one! What the hell!
patience learn you must my young aniken
I'm a windows user, so all my patience is gone...
(I'm sorry :P)
You hate Ballmer that much you couldn't capitalize his name xD
But yeah Ballmer is a wierd thing :D
ZOMG...Enough with the Bill Gates Coverage!!!!
Every other post is about Bill freakin Gates.
Why don't you rename Engadget "BillGatesgadget"????
Oh right....because people actually do care about Bill Gates and what happens to him actually does have an effect on the gadget-minded people who read Engadget.
Seems kinda of sill when it is the other way around for a change.
Now...substitute iPhone everywhere you see Bill Gates, and hmm...still makes sense..
Just for the record...I would like all comments like the ones further up in mine to disappear forever.
what so your uselees comment could be first ?
Well before ol' Gates, I used to see damn fruits and phones. Talk about headaches....
ZOMG...Enough with the Bill Gates Coverage!!!!
Here's my rewrite especially for you, Enjoy:
ZOMG... shut up being a bitch, if you dont want to read an article - scroll past it, if you dont like this website, here's an idea - FUCK OFF!
Very nice selection. I'll start on this end...
Dude, all this coverage is making me sad. Knowing that my nerd-hero is leaving Microsoft is just so damn depressing...why must you keep rubbing it in my face, Ryan!?
Is there an RSS feed to get Bill Gates free Engadget?
Because 1 news post on the first page is just so over the top...
this is a great honor for this great personality
Bill Gates is my hero! Good luck for everything you do in the future, Bill!
Amateurs borrow, professionals steal.
Instead of innovating, Microsoft has ripped off developers and stifled the innovators by introducing vaporware, inducing Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Microsoft is more interested in ideas than ideals, or principles.
Bill Gates is The Devil Incarnate.
I feel better now, knowing he's gone.
Yeah because that doesn't happen like at all, every day... and is definitely not done by any other company on the face of the Earth (And especcially not Apple!)
(my above writings were sarcasm)
Welcome to capitalism, people take other peoples ideas and try to make them better, every company does it and every company has it's fair share of ideas (including Microsoft). What I find funny is how often people throw rocks at Microsoft for doing it while cuddling their little copy machine Apple, and every other electronics manufacturer.
Skry, what exactly has Apple copied from Microsoft? It wasn't the GUI, or the iPod, or the iPhone, obviously it wasn't any computer hardware... what's left? Microsoft, on the other hand, has ripped Apple off so often you can predict what they'll do next by watching what Apple releases first.
I don't like how MS runs their business, because they don't innovate. They buy out other people's ideas or just steal them outright. These days a lot of that is Ballmer's fault though, and I still have a lot of respect for Gates because of what he does with his foundation. He deserves everybody's respect for that. He could literally do anything he wants with that much money, and he uses it to help people. That is the definition of admirable, even more so now that he's devoting all his time to it.
Zak...are you nuts??? they dont innovate???
its people like you who do not respect technology, their creators and what they do...MS has given so much to the industry and to the world and you say they dont innovate
why do you think it is such a huge corp...just by stealing ideas...huh...grow up Zak
you respect Bill Gates just because he does charity work??
who would you respect for technology??? steve jobs??? a guy who was thrown out of a company which he himself founded...what do you think his ideas were original and was he capable enough to do what Bill has done
you dont like how MS runs their business...what are you a fuckin billionaire or a tycoon?? this man has made the largest software company just by stealing ideas....and thats how he became the richest man in the world and remained on top for over a decade??
are you trying to say that Bill Gates has done nothing in bringing a computer to almost everyone...its all stolen ideas...FUCK YOU!!!
and also....Bill Gates even helped your beloved, the then bankrupt, Apple with $150 million...
dont believe me Zak??? check the following link:
http://news.cnet.com/MS-to-invest-150-million-in-Apple/2100-1001_3-202143.html
Hahaha. Vidit, you should probably pop some more valium before you have a heart attack. You can come back when you can form a rational thought again.
Apple does copy things from Microsoft. From small things, to big things such as :
- Windows Media Center : FrontRow or Apple TV
- Windows Desktop Search (shown in PDC '03) : Finder
- Windows Live/Exchange : MobileMe
- WinMo : iPhone
- IE : Safari
- Shadow Copy : Time Machine
- Zune WiFi : iPod Touch's WiFi
- Microsoft Office : iWork
- Zune's big screen : iPod Touch's bigger screen
- SharvedView or Vista's Meeting Space : iChat Theater
- Vista's Live image preview : QuickLook
- Outlook : Apple Mail
- Messenger : iChat
- Active Desktop : Widgets
That's just some stuff at the top of my head. Most of these things, are what Microsoft has done first, before Apple copied and added some glitz and effects. If any are wrong, please feel free to refute me.
Not that Microsoft doesn't copy. Every company probably "copies" something. Sometimes it's even better.
Egnored, the Firefox extension to ignore user on Engadget works great, especially for all of zealots like Zak and Clak.

I'm a bit disappointed engadget. This dedication thread to Bill Gates is underwhelming and chaotic. I would preferred a separate blogs for each different headings. This way it make it easier for people to discuss and choose which one to discuss in.
Maybe when you get your own gadget blog you can arrange the thread however you want them to be.
Congrats Bill G. - you big pimpin' you.............

It is amazing what a part of popular culture he has become. He can now turn his prowess to philanthrophy and give back to the world what Microsoft took.
We will miss you Bill. Good Luck...
You know - I'm almost as sick of hearing about Bill Gates as I was of hearing about the iPhone!
Man, I can't wait until Monday and we can get over this OCD tripping point. :)
[Oh the other hand, thank God it wasn't Steve Jobs retiring - this would go on for months... :)]
I wish Jobbs would retire, and by retire, I mean be launched into the sun.
