Gateway updates bevy of laptops / desktops in one fell swoop
Merely months after Gateway thrilled your soul with the introduction of all sorts of new desktops, the outfit has apparently received the upgrade bug. Starting right now, the 17-inch P-Series, 15.4-inch M-Series and 14.1-inch T-series laptops can be ordered with Intel's latest Core 2 Duo chips, more spacious hard drives and dual-layer DVD writers. For those eying a tower, the FX Series, DX Series and GT Series now provide (up to) a Core 2 Quad Q9300 CPU, 6GB of RAM, an overclocked NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT and price tags starting as low as $549.99. For more on these absolutely riveting upgrades, hit the read link and try not to fall out of your seat.

6GB of RAM!? Holyshit!
purplegreendave @ Jun 30th 2008 12:48PM
Presumably 64 bit Vista then
Juaquin @ Jun 30th 2008 1:16PM
Did I miss something? RAM's dirt cheap, 8GB of quality RAM will cost you less than $150 at NewEgg. A lot of people doing custom builds are doing it because heck, at that price, why not. 6GB is a lot but not exactly surprising.
holycow @ Jun 30th 2008 1:40PM
It is surprising that Gateway is putting it in, whereas other companies are still stuck at 4GB.
modified @ Jun 30th 2008 7:22PM
@juaquin
32bit versions can only use 3gb.
David @ Jul 1st 2008 8:03AM
@modified .. thanks for that, don't realy think you understood what he was saying
@Juaquin are you talking about notebook ram? seeing as you can't get bigger than 2gb modules on newegg, or many other places for that matter, and laptops usually have 2 ram slots, more than 4bg is quite impressive
Maybe a good reason to stop at 4gb is the fact that it is 2 x 2gb modules running in dual channel, an effective combo that provides more ram than you could possibly need, I want faster ram not more.

Can they also update their driver support to something a bit better then sucktastic? Really. I picked up a tablet PC for $800 referbed from them. Solid laptop however EVERY driver listed on their site was at least 6 months out of date. As of last week most of their drivers are from 1st 2nd quarter '07. I ended up picking up most of my drivers from the various hardware manufacturers. e.g. Intel for chipset, graphics, WIFI. Synaptics for touchpad, WACOM for the touchscreen, etc.
Then there is the fact that Gateway has NO diagnostic utilities. None. Their site recommends using Vista's internal diagnostics. WTF Gateway?
Seriously though. Hardware is not bad, but dear god software support is for crap.
Omnomnomnom @ Jun 30th 2008 12:57PM
Uhh, no Montevina laptops?
Is Intel so behind on Montevina that PC manufacturers are just giving up and releasing new models without it?
Danakin @ Jun 30th 2008 12:58PM
I have never used a gateway and been satisfied with it, but holy crap these specs rawk!
ShadowKain @ Jun 30th 2008 1:09PM
Your shiny awesome ass red paintjob doesn't fool me Gateway! I still know your laptops and company stink majorly! >:)
oZ @ Jun 30th 2008 1:28PM
You do? As much as I have ripped on them, and I only have anecdotal evidence, they have had some really solid offerings over the past 2 or 3 years since they dropped the Solo line and concentrated on steady improvement. I've only used 3 or 4 Gateway laptops in that time, but they've been really great little machines, especially for the money.
The only reason I haven't bought one is they seem to really hate high resolution LCDs.
Joshua.JWilliams @ Jun 30th 2008 5:34PM
I think for what they offer, Gateway laptops are pretty good. My past laptop had pretty good built quality. I only had it roughly 6 to 7 months strictly because the keyboard was too spongy to type on. It was awful. I think the new gateways are getting better and better. This article is a testament to that.
computer.dude.28 @ Jun 30th 2008 1:10PM
That's a pretty HDMI port on the corner there
Nick Ritch @ Jun 30th 2008 3:16PM
That is the first thing I noticed on this thing. A very nice feature!!!
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 30th 2008 1:19PM
I wish these companies would stop bothering with VGA ports on their laptops. I understand that a lot of older monitors still use them, but DVI is adaptable, so what gives?
retro77 @ Jun 30th 2008 1:24PM
Dell should just quit messing around and buy Gateway already.
Aerv @ Jun 30th 2008 5:49PM
As I recall, Acer bought out Gateway to become the third largest PC manufacturer (unless its changed it was Dell, HP and then Acer.gateway nudging out hte IBM/lenovo people)? So its a bit late for Dell unles they want to pick up Acer too.
dothedrewtoo @ Jun 30th 2008 2:32PM
i just checked it out, i don't see any with 6gigs of ram, and i don't see any way to customize any of the computers, it's weird
tatarynowicz @ Jun 30th 2008 2:35PM
Can you tell me please, what is the point of listing the top configuration with the bottom price? How about the price for the configuration you list?
adelossa @ Jun 30th 2008 6:48PM
Lets hope their hinges stay on the laptop now.
modified @ Jun 30th 2008 7:23PM
Gateway really needs a logo refresh. I know lots of people who are instantly turned away from their products because they have that stupid cow box on it.
