Sony releasing PS3 firmware 2.41 'midweek' say reps
If you've been stuck waiting on Sony to get its act together concerning firmware 2.40, you might not have to hang back much longer. According to ComputerAndVideoGames, reps from the console-maker say that an update to the broken, PS3-bricking system software will be headed out to users "midweek." The company hasn't made an official announcement yet, but it certainly is looking like 2.41 will become a reality sooner rather than later, which should be music to the ears of a lot of deeply annoyed gamers.

Great news.
I for one had no problems with 2.40, but my less informed friends missed the update. Soon, they can finally message me back in game.

^ Obviously the PS3 has good games. But, how many good exclusive games do they have so far?
Jamesology @ Jul 7th 2008 3:07PM
^ You keep saying that, and let's see how many the 360 will have left. At this rate it seems like it's getting less and less.
PS3 -" Hello Lost Planet, oh I see you brought along Bioshock with you."
360 exclusive games - "Hey! Yeah more will be coming but they'll come a little later."
Don't get me wrong, I still love my 360 more. But the PS3 is growing I guess.
Lars @ Jul 7th 2008 3:44PM
"how many good exclusive games do they have"
The problem with that question is that everyone will have a different answer since "good" is a relative term meaning alluring to the particular user in question.
For me there is a far far greater number of "good" exclusives on PS3 than 360. On 360 there's only 2 that I'm interested in at this time. Plus I'm a long-time PC gamer and most of the "exclusives" on 360 are also released on PC at the same time, and they're far superior to their 360 counterparts. As far as FPS's are concerned, I much prefer sitting at a desk while using a keyboard and mouse over sitting way back and using sticks to aim and move. Though if they're adventure or tactical shooters then I don't mind.
starchild @ Jul 7th 2008 4:40PM
@rock99rock:
I can always start a voice conversation, but if you're referring to leaving voice messages, that will probably be a feature of Home.

Let me just find mine I think it is keeping the couch level.
Danakin @ Jul 7th 2008 9:46AM
wow, your couch must be REALLY uneven, where did you get it...Norway?
Pochi @ Jul 7th 2008 10:04AM
Another "but it has no games" commenter...? Here, I'll help you out...
Grand Theft Auto IV
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Orange Box
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
GRID
Burnout Paradise
Unreal Tournament 3
Resistance: Fall of Man
Battlefield: Bad Company
Virtua Fighter 5
MotorStorm
Devil May Cry 4
Civilization Revolution
DiRT: Colin McRae Off-Road
Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Assassin's Creed
If you need more, use the "internets."
kal326 @ Jul 7th 2008 10:33AM
@Pouchi
Sorry to burst your bubble, but well over half of those games can be played on competitors consoles and/or PC's. So why don't you go back to the "internets" and find a list of games that might actually be worth buying a PS3 for if you aren't just looking for a nice cheap BR player.
When BR movies drop a bit more in line with the pricing of DVDs I'll probably pick up a PS3 until then I'll just have to make due with my upscaling DVD player and 360.
Pochi @ Jul 7th 2008 10:39AM
@kal326
Not everybody has a "competitor's console," not everybody has a powerhouse PC (nor do many want to sit in front of a PC as opposed to a nice TV setup), and not everyone has a blu-ray player outside of their PS3. And not everyone needs more than 50 games to keep themselves busy. Some of us actually beat them when we buy them.
Not only that, but that's a partial list. Like I said, you want more, go get 'em yourself.
Dick.
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 10:55AM
Pochi... theres no doubt that the PS3 has games but I'd like you to make a list of GOOD games.
That list will get a lot shorter ;)
Pochi @ Jul 7th 2008 11:06AM
@Daniel
"Good" is subjective. Pick the ones you like and play them.
Quicksilver4648 @ Jul 7th 2008 11:20AM
@ Pochi
12 out of those 20 you listed are multiplatform. So I might as well add those in a list of great 360 games. List just exclusives.
Jamesology @ Jul 7th 2008 3:26PM
WOW you 360 fans are bashing the PS3 about games and it still cannot beat the Nintendo Wii in sales even though it had a year to build up it's reputation.
Heck, the system cannot even sell in Japan the land of electronics. That's Sad. Those sold number are probably donation programs.
Then, to add more, you 360 fans keeps talking about exclusives but at this rate you keep losing them. First Lost planet, now Bioshock, what's next? Gears of War 2. If you are talking exclusives Halo is not considered exclusive if I can play it on my PC. idiots
John @ Jul 7th 2008 4:54PM
In Japan, the "land of electronics", foreign companies have a very difficult time getting a foothold. There's really no big box chain stores to sign contracts with, you have to deal with hundreds of small individual storefronts. And guess who can do that more easily - Japanese businesses, or Western companies.
Danakin @ Jul 7th 2008 9:45AM
Cool
Frun @ Jul 7th 2008 9:46AM
I think I'll wait till the end of the week on this one.
whowhatme @ Jul 7th 2008 9:49AM
instead of installing an update that screws up all my saved data and downloads, i'd rather wait to get an update that doesn't brick my ps3...
ShadowKain @ Jul 7th 2008 9:51AM
Sony...come on
NeverSummer @ Jul 7th 2008 8:02PM
After updating my 60GB to 2.40, the PS3 doesn't detect my Logitech USB mic anymore. I need to unplug and plug everytime I'm using it. Does anyone else have this problem with their USB mic?
Aaronage @ Jul 7th 2008 9:54AM
It's good they are sorting this mess out fast!
My PS3 had no issues but i still wanna get that update installed just in case :)
Tarnation @ Jul 7th 2008 10:02AM
Let's compare real quick.
Xbox 360 bad hardware burns up often, good software.
Sony good hardware, bad software and hard to code for.
Hey everyone just needs to go buy a boxorz o' roxorz.
TimeyWimeyStuff @ Jul 7th 2008 10:25AM
Microsoft = Good Software?
That IS funny..
Chris @ Jul 7th 2008 10:37AM
Microsoft has great software. Have you ever used office? I'm betting that you have. Even Open Office is basically just an office clone. Visual Studio is probably the best IDE I've ever used. Their operating system may leave something to be desired, but software wise, I think Microsoft is pretty solid.
Yoooder @ Jul 7th 2008 10:57AM
@Chris: Microsoft's best software is developed by others, purchased by Microsoft and rebranded. Office is an exception, however keep in mind that it's taken nearly 20 years for it to get to where it is; and has had plenty of mistakes and pitfalls along the way.
Visual Studio is OK, however it doesn't escape the typical paradigm of Microsoft Editors creating a huge amount of content that can't be modified without either breaking the "wizard" or getting your changes trashed. As a GUI editor it's fine for laying out WinForms, but likes to crash and puke all too often. As a text editor it uses non-standard bindings, lacks speed, and has no exceptional offerings that beat out other IDEs (VIm, NetBeans, Eclipse, Mono, etc... all offer the majority of text-editing features). About the only real outstanding feature to VS is Edit & Continue--however I've seen many instances of it refusing to work correctly for other developers despite having all the same settings and configs as myself.
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 11:10AM
Ok you can go on an anti-xbox360 rant all you want but you have to realise that the xbox-360 hasn't had hardware problems since they introduced the larger heatsink then later, the 65nm processor... These arguments hold no ground any longer...
TimeyWimeyStuff @ Jul 7th 2008 12:14PM
@Daniel
You're wrong. According to Wikipedia:
General hardware failure rates of the "Falcon" motherboard is rumored to be around 10%
Kris @ Jul 7th 2008 12:50PM
@Yoooder, you should actually use a product or at least do research on it before commenting on it.
First off, Visual Studio can create content for you but you can easily modify it and it won't break anything. In fact, you can use any supported language to create an entire GUI without ever touching the Designer. Or you can do a mixture of both and have no issues. You changes will not get trashed untill you update the Designer files but those are only for, you guessed it, the designer. You can still do the samethings without touching them pretty easily.
Secondly, I've used Visual Studio 6, 7, 8 and now 9 for quite some time and I haven't had a single crash since Visual Studio 6. I've used VS on too many systems to count and my co-workers never experience crashing. Sometimes there is the occasional slow down but that's to be expected when you have tons of applications open.
Also, Visual Studio is fast and Microsoft's compilers for C++ are better than GCC's in speed and binary size. I'm not sure what you're referring to non-standard bindings (it's a glorified text editor).
Continue and Edit was only in VB6 and then returned in VS 2005 so if it didn't work for you in 2002/2003... well that's not a surprise. I haven't had difficulty using it but then again I never use it. I find break points, variable watches and other debugging tools more important and useful.
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 12:59PM
@ TimeyWimeyStuff, You're stupid... 10% is extremely good for failure rate... why don't your ass fisting friend wikipedia to see what the failure rate of ps3's are... douche
Aaronage @ Jul 7th 2008 5:12PM
@ Daniel
10% is a good failure rate?
WTF are you on xD
That 1 in 10, its abysmal!
The Wii and PS3 have been reported at around 1-2% - thats a good failure rate :P
DeathroW @ Jul 7th 2008 10:27AM
The be honest though, the xmb is a very nice peice of software and there hasnt been any problems with it until now.
The dashboard always felt a bit clunky compared to the xmb, but i mean its nothing important.
Noir @ Jul 7th 2008 1:01PM
I own a 360 and I must say I do prefer the XMB over the Dashboard.
To me it just looks more like a functional desktop and has some classy attributes.
Brent @ Jul 7th 2008 10:40AM
I can't wait to get the update that will fix the problem that I didn't have. I think the XMB is pretty slick, and I use my PS3 for pretty much all of my media. The 360 is used more for gaming, though.
Yoooder @ Jul 7th 2008 10:45AM
I downloaded the update after it had been pulled (found it mirrored on another site) and haven't had any problems.
However, seeing how they also pulled the Super Stardust update and no games support the "my playlist" feature, about all I could do was message my friends and wait for them to leave their games to reply to me....
I'm looking forward to 2.41, I want my Super Stardust trophies!
retro77 @ Jul 7th 2008 10:50AM
-1 Sony, -1.....
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 11:16AM
@Pochi, the only interesting game that is exclusive to the PS3 you have there is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots... but that will be short lived since it is coming to the Xbox 360 in a year... gg
And you forgot one of the only decent games for the PS3 at the moment... GT5.
Grapist @ Jul 7th 2008 11:32AM
So wait, in a year they're going to release MSG4 on the 360? With 1/5th less content? Yeahhhhhh..... not going to happen.
Of that list up top, 8 of those games are PS3 exclusive, and pretty good games. Add the other 12, and that's a relatively solid list of games for the PS3. Add Blu-Ray, free online services, and hardware that won't overheat and fail, and I think that's good enough reason for someone who has yet to get either system.
wearnhardt @ Jul 7th 2008 11:39AM
and it plays blu-rays, and the form factor of the controller is so good that they haven't had to change it much since the PS1....the same cannot be said about the xbox.
Oh, and 2.4 didn't brick my PS3. The in game menu is clutch.
papafew @ Jul 7th 2008 12:05PM
@daniel
you forgot "pixeljunk monsters encore", the best game actually on ps3, and exclusive...
XMB - look and feel - games - hardware - spirit : in fact SONY RULES
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 12:59PM
@Grapist you're f'in stupid... first, the bluray drive in a ps3 is too slow to play games normally, so what happens most of the time is they use data redundancy to essentially copy the game multiple times on the disc to allow for faster access which results in less storage...
Second do some research before you write off the notion of MGS4 on Xbox 360... Its called Google, the website is www.google.com. I'm not even going to dignify your lack of intelligence by posting links to this fact.
Oh and btw most storage space is taken up by pre-rendered cut scenes, all they have to do to reduce storage requirements is do live action cut scenes...

Paulmichael @ Jul 7th 2008 2:05PM
Anyone going to give me a list of good 360 games??? What're some good exclusives on that console?
Paulmichael @ Jul 7th 2008 2:26PM
Daniel Daniel Daniel...
*Ahem*
They use installs on the hard drive to reduce loading time on the larger games, just like a computer does. With the ability to install any hard drive you want without voiding my warranty, you can have hundreds of gigs of space and then storage is a non-issue.
MGS4 is NEVER coming to the 360, the cutscenes use the in-game engine, they are scripted events that are obviously very small files. I don't know what takes up the two layers of that disc, but I know it ain't the cutscenes.
Matt @ Jul 7th 2008 2:54PM
@ Paulmichael
360 exclusives?
Halo 3
Gears of War
Forza 2
Ninja Gaiden 2
Too Human
Dead Rising
Dead or Alive
Chromehounds
Perfect Dark Zero
Lost Odyssey
Ace Combat 6
PGR
Saints Row
There are many more, but I listed the ones that don't suck.
Iridium @ Jul 7th 2008 11:16AM
-1 to the idiot who posted a fake story on the official Playstation forum that caused this whole mess.
The update did not brick consoles unless you did something stupid like turn it off in the middle of the installation.
Nearly to the minute that the update went live there was a post saying 2.4 bricked his console.
The asshole got his wish to get people pissed at Sony and caused a lot of people to miss out on an update for over a week.
octoberasian @ Jul 7th 2008 11:43AM
I'm curious: How does one update a bricked PS3 that had a bad version 2.40 update?
Wouldn't the PS3 have to be sent back to Sony?
emagius @ Jul 7th 2008 2:10PM
Reformatting the hard drive (in a PC or other PS3) unbricks the system.
starchild @ Jul 7th 2008 2:19PM
I am not 100% sure, but to fix a bricked PS3, I have heard of people removing their hard drives from their PS3, backing up their saves, formatting to FAT32, and then reinstalling the drive.
starchild @ Jul 7th 2008 2:22PM
emagius beat me to the punch :p
