Disney's $249 remote-controlled Wall-E up for pre-order
So it's a full $59 more than we were expecting, but with Wall-E's tremendous success at the box office, we have a feeling Disney can get away with it. The Ultimate Wall-E remote control robot is now up for pre-order, promising kids and adults-longing-to-be-kids alike hours upon hours of fun. For those who missed this creature frolicking on video, here are the highlights: he can chat with his owner, dance, play music, dazzle you with those eyes and even sense / avoid obstacles. Unfortunately, all $249 will buy you is a place in line, as this fellow isn't expect to ship until October 16th.

So how long until the first one ends up in a landfill?
Johnny-5! Buried!
Does anybody else occasionally think "Dugg" and then remember you're not on that site?
yeah, this thing does kinda remind me of Digg Dugg
no
Hi!
Do you know if this robot is Iphone 3G compatible? Also, I keep reading @ it easily/constantly tips over- (which would no doubt be really bad for my Iphone, right)? I love the idea of Wall-E being my MP3 player... is there any hope?
I definitely want one of these.
me too. A cheap Off-the-shelf robot to fight in the robot combat league.

I'd still rather have one of the little robots out of Short Circuit 2.
Hell yeah. Johnny-5 FTW!
Except they weren't that little. They were almost 6ft tall!
And yes, i think Wall-E's looks were taken from Johnny 5. If you think about it, most of the parents of the kids seeing Wall-E remember Johnny 5. It'll prep them for the upcoming remake of that movie.....
@kjb434
He was talking about the Johnny 5 toys that they were making in the 2nd movie, remember?
I want an EVE one.
agreed.
ill take the pretty white one over wall-e any day
Yes, I'd love a hovering Eve! (Obviously anti-gravity doesn't exist and/or is too expensive for toys, but with a gyro she could hover stationary over a base providing a magnetic field.)
If it can't compact my trash, what good is it?
So, can this thing mix drinks?
I like how it phones home to disney and nobody even cares.
Johnny who? this movie was so amazing Wall*E was way better than johny 5 and the movie next to Dark knight was the best movie of the year i would deffintly get this
Yeah but some people think it makes them "Geek-chic" if they throw in a johnny-5 reference any time someone mentions wall-e.
Nice. I will make cubes of my enemies now with my new little firend!!!
MUUAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
"WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm."
WTF?
Anything we buy has that stupid warning.
ironically, this includes even black-market babies
I think they are talking about some substance that is a file retardant. Cal has required that warning now. I think. I could be wrong.
He looks so sad. "Please sir control me."
I'm guessing the "infrared remote control" won't allow me to make him turn all the way around.
Def want one of these. Such an awesome movie
Odd, I swear I saw one of these at Toys 'R Us just around the time the movie came out. The actual remote control model.
What you saw was the U-Command Wall-E, which is only $50-$60, depending on where you buy it. Not as many features as the Ultimate, but still a fun toy (and will tide you over until the Ultimate one comes out).
Oh the irony! These poor things'll end up in one of those huge piles that he'll later have to help clean up. It's a wonder the minds at Pixar didn't toss in a cameo or two of his own little toys in the trash heaps Wall-E was re-packaging. (I have a feeling they might have, only to have it nixed by corporate)
And that chemical they mention might be BPA
Well, there were broken down Wall-E units all over the place.
It would be awesome if it was 3' tall rather than just 18". I get the feeling it will be so small as to not be that fun.
So a movie whose central theme is the destruction of our environment is being marketed by expensive, battery-using toys that will all end up in landfills?
Can you say "marketing department/story department disconnect?"
I can see this being used by hackers. A ton of cool sensors and gizmos for $250. But it comes at a much higher cost, disassembling something as cute as Wall-e.
If he makes the Mac startup sound, they've got a buyer. :-)
(Kidding - didn't think the movie was so incredible.)
Do the eyes have the binocular-with-zoom optics of the animated Wall-E from the movie?
That movie was awesome. How anyone can pull off a love story between two robots is beyond me, but Pixar did it...spectacularly.
it is a basic literary device called Anthropomorphism
@gb
win
But it's the fact that it was executed to perfection that amazes me. Not many films are able to do that.

welcome to the discussion
I'd like to see the case mod.
Yeah I preordered on Jun 15th the day they showed up for order on Toys R Us site and got a confirmed order for 2 @ 199.00 Now the sku has been replaced and I am just waiting to see if they automatically cancel my order and put me at the back of the line or just jack the price on me and ship to me 1st
For $249, he'd better come with the movie's personality.
Even if it talks and awkwardly dances with a pot lid as a top hat, I wouldn't buy it because...
I don't need it! It won't last very long! It will end up in a land fill! It is made with toxins!
There are too many people in the world and too few resources to continue to make disposable entertainment products. The movie should be enough, people!
Time to evolve!
There's a 10% off discount code for the Disney store. I don't know when it expires, but it worked for me.

Yeah, I saw one on the shelf at Sam's Club the same week the movie came out. Might have been remote control only, no speech, music, etc? I didn't look too close. But it at least moved around by remote, and was priced about $60.

Toys R Us says it'll be shipped by September 13th.
My girlfriend would love this for Christmas. Thanks!
Isn't anyone else concerned that they gave the remote control of the robot... to the robot???
