ASUS doles out gold and blue Eee PCs
With the introduction of the well-received N10, we thought maybe -- just maybe -- ASUS was moving beyond its disgusting obsession with mutilating the Eee brand. Instead, we're now faced with fresh hues of two old faces: the blue 901A and the gilded 900A. Looks as if all the internals have remained the same, though there's no indication what kind of premium (if any) you'll have to pay for your color of choice.

Sam Zebian @ Sep 27th 2008 8:27PM
So there were shiny blue laptops in 1977?? I don't think so...
micklol @ Sep 27th 2008 10:10PM
They also want their joke back.
....joke's on me I guess....
sinai @ Sep 27th 2008 10:20PM

@ac14,
You shouldn't put your age after your nickname, it's bad for your image.
ac14 @ Sep 28th 2008 10:11AM
You are just assuming its my age.
zdravko @ Sep 28th 2008 12:00AM
The colour is a rip-off of Acer One, which by the way is still the better chiose

UCLA rejoices.
Stephen Wilson @ Sep 27th 2008 10:10PM
UCLA? That ASUS is real blue not baby blue. GO BEARS!
sinai @ Sep 27th 2008 10:30PM
you idiot, the colors of ALL the University California colleges are blue and gold.
way to make your school proud.
Stephen Wilson @ Sep 27th 2008 11:48PM
And as the original UC, GO BEARS!
What I was trying to say is that although all the UCs are blue and gold, the other ones were at least original enough to choose a new mascot, while UCLA went with a bruin, very creative...
Also, UCLA uses a lighted color blue than CAL (http://www.ncaafootball.com/images/ucla_tylerebell_200w_ap_100403.jpg), which was my original point.
No one cares though.. low rank me for off-topic ranting...

The blue looks like a direct knock at Acer's door.
SHoe @ Sep 28th 2008 2:56PM
Holy hell - you're right. The sales numbers show that Acer is the only other netbook with major sales - so Asus is engaging in this funny bit of skinning in an effort to trick some people into buying this. That sounds far fetched but I don't think it is. Asus showed that they are basically not competent (yet) at managing a brand; the way they watered down their golden Eee brand and rendered it meaningless in a matter of months should be a marketing case study taught in schools. Somebody needs to talk to the decision makers at that company and say 'look - let's just sit down, breath, cool our heads, and look at what were doing here before we rush another dozen models out the door this week. okay?'
Klebbenator @ Sep 27th 2008 9:22PM
She's a beauty! I just need some money.
Skazer @ Sep 27th 2008 9:44PM
And Engadget continues it's immature obsession with Asus's Eee naming system. It's just 2 new colours for god's sakes. Try not to choke on your tongues when eating dinner tomorrow.

I actually thought that was an aspire One until I read the title. I guess the Taiwanese like copying of their own kind now.
Peter @ Sep 27th 2008 9:55PM
*off their own kind
j.d.ripper @ Sep 28th 2008 7:04AM
The acer aspire one is the first thing that came to my mind as well.
Charles R Hamilton @ Sep 27th 2008 10:03PM
Any word on the rumored touchscreen version?
Ian @ Sep 27th 2008 11:19PM
Does that blue model have glitter on the lid? Effing glitter? Damn.
Chin-Poh @ Sep 28th 2008 12:49AM
Holy crap, I also thought it was an Acer Aspire One at first glance, thats exactly the same blue finish! : 0

Wow, I had a Voltron action figure that looked just like that!
Jash Sayani @ Sep 28th 2008 2:56AM
Like the 901, Is Asus going to add HSUPA to the 1000H as well...? If so, I'll wait for the 1000H with HSUPA.

I want to try out a few netbook styles, just to see what they feel like. Do readers here know of any places around orange county, CA where they have these small laptops on display? I went to a bestbuy, but all they had were a bunch of sony/HP/apple laptops. I'm using a dell 14.1" right now and it's a bit heavy (600m) for lugging around, and I wanted something pretty light. I did see an HP tablet 12.1" that felt pretty light, but I'm not sure about it, seemed a bit bulky at the moment, and the stylus was missing so I couldn't test it. Not sure if I absolutely need a tablet function, either, which is why these new netbook are enough for class lectures and viewing basic stuff, so nothing powerful needed. The new dell mini computer is looking good, b/c it's really light, but I am not sure if the keyboard is good, which is why I wanted to try it out first.
Ratnesh Mehra @ Sep 28th 2008 11:59AM
not going to be worth the price premium IMO.
adelossa @ Sep 28th 2008 1:42PM
Hey, now that netbook matches my car.
LondonConsultant @ Sep 28th 2008 3:37PM
Asus, Don't bother gilding the lily and, instead, just release the 901 in matte (not glossy) black..
