Retail T-Mobile G1s showing up in loving customers' hands

[Thanks, cWj]

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
mine is in the way! checked on UPS :) will be delivered on 21st
did tmobile send you a tracking #? I didn't get one, yet.
No they didn't just go to UPS.com and under tracking type in your address followed by "where's my G1".
cheers.
On the UPS site, choose track by reference number and use your t-mobile phone number, dashes included (xxx-xxx-xxxx).
Same here, arrives tomorrow.
Anyone know current delivery status in the UK? (I put my name down on T-Mobile UK's G1 list ages ago - and have heard nothing since...)
I'm supposed to be getting my on wednesday, so excited. To give my XDA Flame a much needed break,
looking forward to for unboxing video and actual user review video...
According to the UPS tracking page, mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I'm pretty excited about it.
Asking iEye to keep his comments constructive or intelligent is asking for the impossible.
Stupid comment system - that was in response to the post below.
2 days advance delivery on a 3rd rate handset... ooooh
nerd: "Hey everyone I have a G1 before everyone else! look at me love me!"
everone else: "What's the heck is a G1?" hah!
Here's a rope, go jump from a tree and DON'T FORGET TO TIE THE ROPE AROUND YOUR NECK!
FUCKING TROLL!
Looking forward to a ROM dump and user review
@iEye
"Hey everyone I love Apple so much I even call myself iEye."
Seriously? Really? Does that make you all that much cooler? Or is it ripping on technology on a tech website that makes you feel better? I'm just curious how often you actually associate with the public at large...
@iEye -- There's no need for this kind of pointless attack. Try and keep your comments to something constructive and intelligent, or we'll see little reason to read them (hence your grayed-out status right now).
Oh yes, "constructive and intelligent". We wouldn't have it any other way here at Engadget.
Really?
I'm surprised this is just the first time iEye has been called out. I know it is difficult to weed through all the nonsense happening on here Josh, but thank you for that :)
Whatever, chump. Even my wife wants a G1.
If we can't have LittleBigPlanet on time, it's nice to see the G1 a bit early ('cept for us AT&T victims).
Why is this guy not banned yet? Seriously...
iEye = iTard
UPS says its out for delivery.
I got mine today! ::high five::
so do you like it overall? and how is typing on it with that big bag on the side, it looks uncomfortable
Got mine as well, in the NYC area. This phone is great, 3G network is up and running as is the Android Market. Can't wait for the developers to start woo'ing me with there free apps. Good job Google, and T-Mobile... and HTC.
I still have to wait till release day, but I'm over at my friends house and his is out for delivery. That was 3 hours ago and it was only 5 miles away. We are staring out the window...
@ AK47 - "mine is in the way!"
"mine"? Are you an idiot? Yes you are! "Mine is on the way!" Idiot
@ Frankie - "I'm suppose to be getting my on wednesday"
"my"? Are you an idiot? Yes you are! "I'm suppose to be getting mine on Wednesday"
Learn how to write idiots.
@ chefgon_ign - At least this guy knows how to write.
wow, someone woke up with his dick lodged firmly up his own ass today.
Who's the real idiot? It's called a typo.
Don´t be an ass, idiot. If you can do as well an any other language that isn't your native language, I'd be very surprised, and want to see a sample :P
"I'm suppose to be getting my on wednesday"
"my"? Are you an idiot? Yes you are! "I'm suppose to be getting mine on Wednesday"
Somebody else needs to spank their english teacher.
Supposed not suppose.
Get it right first yourself before annoying other users with your comments.
@English Idiots
wow what a loser
@English Idiots
"Learn how to write idiots."
Reading this thread, I believe we all know how to write the word "idiots".
If you're going to be a complete spelling nazi, learn to use proper punctuation.
"Learn how to write, idiots."
Thanks for calling out "English Idiots" for me guys. I was rushing my comment, responding while my office phone was ringing - trying to see if I could get my post out before my phone went to voicemail. Either way, thanks for putting him in his place.
And, I can't believe he actually scans posts looking for typos, get a life dude.
OMgOsh Englizsh Iditoz! Yuo ar so rite! At laest you know how to write!!! AMAZING!!!!
My is not on the way. Mine didn't order a G1.
@ english idiots: It is "I am supposed to get mine tomorrow", not "I am suppose..." >.
Man what an ugly phone.
I went to the kiosk in cherry creek mall this weekend. They have one you can play with. Its pretty cool. I played with it for about 5 mins. I thought the bulge on the right would interfere with keyboard use, but it didn't seem to be an issue. The screen is very nice. Sometimes the UI would not react to switching between landscape/portrait. Seemed to feel well built. The guy told me that it supported @home. website says otherwise..
They also had the new blackberry flip. That seems like it would break with a month of use! I wasn't impress at all. The trackball was recessed too far. I expected more from a blackberry product.
You mean @home the distributed network computing thing? I really hope if it is they don't decide to charge you for data transferred. That could potentially lead to more '$10,000,000 Cell Phone Bill' on YouTube, give or take a few zeros.
Posting on my new G1 right now. Omg it's so awesome!!
Congrats everyone, I hope you enjoy your new gadgets! :-) A lot of work went into this and it's nice that people will be able to enjoy it now. I'm not trying to spam but if you want there is a ROM dump and some other interesting stuff at XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=446
I was at a t-mobile store trying to fix my old phone last week, and while the tech was on the phone he whipped out his new G1. He was even gracious enough to let me play with it.
sigh.
And... any thoughts on the matter?
But what about the phone? Did you get to handle it as well?
I got to play with one at our T-Mobile store as well. Unfortunately he had no SIM in it, nor could he get the WiFi going, so I could only check out the non-data aspects of it. The build appeared very sturdy, with both halves feeling very solid; it's quite a hefty phone actually. The only thing physically is that there is a little bit of play as you squeeze the two halves together in closed mode. The old MDA and Wing had virtually no give in that respect, but whatever. It could also stand to be a little less tall and a bit thinner, but that's not a deal breaker for me. The UI feels very smooth and responsive with even a light touch of the finger. I am so over the old membrane-based resistive screens, this is a huge improvement. I did notice the annoying thing with the red power button--I'm so used to hitting that as the Home screen on WinMo phones, while here it merely locks the phone and shuts off the screen. I'm sure someone will hack an override for that one of these days.
this is what im talkin about
"Here's a rope, go jump from a tree and DON'T FORGET TO TIE THE ROPE AROUND YOUR NECK!
FUCKING TROLL!
Looking forward to a ROM dump and user review"
I just got mine today! a few minutes ago in fact... I love it... I had doubts because of all the good and bad reviews, but you know what.. it maybe ugly but its sure fun and functional..... and for all of you who are g1 haters... what ever! Kiss my G1 loving arse!
got mine today! now just waiting for it to be fully charged...
The best part of this post is the photo of the G1 box sitting on someone's mattress. Ready to get busy with my G1. Cue appropriate pr0n muzak. UPS has mine scheduled to arrive tomorrow, 10/21. w00t!
What's even better is the mattress looks naked. As in they already had "business time" and now the sheets are in the wash.
Business hours are over baby.
I haven't gotten anything at ALL confirming my pre-order. I don't have a tracking number, no messages came on my cell phone and I have no emails from Tmo other than October Scoop. I called and they did see that it's pre-ordered and it does have an order number, so I'm just hoping and praying it pops up on my doostep between now and Thursday.
Yo. Have you tried tracking by way of reference number on ups.com? That's how I got my tracking number. Try this tutorial on how to do it (screen shots and everything).
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/vbglossar.php?do=showentry&catid=2&id=3
I called Tmo and the rep. gave me a tracking number. Will be here tomorrow, yay :)
Apparently the details get lost somewhere between Tmo and the customer on these pre-orders. Some customers are fully updated with order and shipping info sent to their phones and emails, while others are left wondering. She also told me that many people originally sched. for the 22nd are getting theirs earlier (today/tomorrow) and that even some of the Nov. batches are getting moved up.
If you haven't received any confirmation, give them a call and have a rep. check it out for you.
Mine is to be delivered tomorrow (to Santa Ana, Orange County, CA) according to UPS. It's still sitting at UPS warehouse in Ontario, CA, since late 10/17.
I'm less concerned about the photo taken on the mattress as i am that the matress has no sheet on top of it.
Sometimes Laundry Day and New Gadget Day happen to hit at the same time. It happens to the best of us.
Said it before and I'll say it again. Please, please, please stop making unpocketable, gigantic "smartphones" with slide out qwerty keyboards. This thing is as ugly as sin. Let's get real people, in 2003 this thing would've been awesome. Now? Not so much.
Unpocketable? Are you serious? How tight are your Emo jeans? I think you have gravely misinterpreted the size of this device.
I have never said it before, but I will now: Please, please, please ignore the above comment. I love huge screens and physical keyboards, and at least 1.5 millions people agree with me.
Go buy an iPhone. It's pretty nice and sounds like it would suit you well. Me? I want a G1. Apparently enough people want G1s and similar devices that there's a market for them. I have the funny feeling that when Google is involved in a product, there might be just the tiniest bit of market research behind it. Just a hunch I have...
Yes because you've held one...right? The thing is pocketable. Its not iPhone thin but its not some sort of iPaq with sleeve thick.
Nope because I'm not currently a T Mobile customer so we are hosed. I'm going to be outside a T Mob store at 5AM Wednesday. *sighs*
Android: good, T-Mobile>ATT, G1: fugly
I'm getting mine tomorrow:
From UPS website:
"Your package is in the UPS system and has a rescheduled delivery date of 10/21/2008."
Can't wait.. :))
Wow, most of you people need lives.
*lays naked on bed and whips out G1* **FAP FAP FAP**
Delivered. G1 is not as exciting as yPhone but at least I will have Tmo's support behind if something goes wrong.
Too bad it's so ugly. It's the Amazon Kindle of cell phones. Not sure what Google was thinking using that monstrosity to try and break into such a difficult market. HTC makes phones so much better looking than that one; such a poor choice for all parties involved.
got mine today in Chicago, IL. I ordered mine on the 30th of September so I am pretty pleased it's already here. Way to go T-Mobile! Also, works with my personal domain, which I set up through Google Apps. So far so good...
Thank you for that info. I also use my personal domain through Google apps and Gmail, and was wondering if that would work. Do you have multiple Gmail accounts? Can you use the other mail program to configure on Gmail?
The reason I ask is my personal email is still on a standard Gmail account. I like to get both personal and business accounts on my phone.
I believe you have to set use an @gmail.com account, and then also have the option of adding a hosted account.
got mine today.....
My G1 departed HODGKINS IN, on 10/17/2008.. I'm in the Seattle area.. Delivery date still says the 21st..
Its amazing to me that there are so many of us grown men (myself included) with little patience for our toys.. How many of you have checked UPS more than 3 times today?? God I'm a dork!! Having learned from past climactic gadget arrivals, I know that Ill get the G1, rip it open like a child at Christmas, fiddle until I'm exhausted and finally apologize to my wife for having been absent for so long.. After all of the studying, obsessing, reviewing, wondering and waiting, I know Ill feel that certain emptiness that only comes when I'm finally holding the thing in my hands.. I wish drug company's would come up with some sort of drug for gadget addicts.. Until then, $200 bucks for the next best gadget/fix will have to do..
IC
Wow, your comment was like my my biography, except for the fact that I'm not married (being a device geek before I was legally old enough to get married probably prevented that), otherwise you hit it right on the head.
"After all of the studying, obsessing, reviewing, wondering and waiting, I know Ill feel that certain emptiness that only comes when I'm finally holding the thing in my hands." - routb3d. Perfectly put
I'm studying for my CCNA, but I've been putting more hours into studying the G1 (I'm Pathetic!!!!)
mine got rescheduled for tommorow! -_- but to track yours just go to ups.com track by reference and type your number.. make sure u have dashes ie. 555-555-5555
Our brick and mortars will have them wednesday to play with....I would just like to remind the folks that are not enamoured with it's looks....a lot of ugly things wind up being classics...and I'm thinking that as ugly as people are calling it this will wind up being one of those classics....it's the first of it's kind and guess what...all after will be judged by it...better or worse this is the model t of android and will probably maintain a high resale value down the line when they are older and hard to find because of the upward compatibility built into it years down the line when devices have greatly advance from where they are perhaps this handset will still be able to run android and that jones for jumping handsets every year or so may be "fixed" once people start providing the apps for this phone..its no beast but it certainly has teeth......let's give it a chance and let the pilgrims tell us about it first hand....just my 2 cents

Mine is on the UPS truck out for delivery, I should be seeing it within the next few hours.
I had the iPhone and sold it due to my disagreements with how apple has handled the NDA and applications. As a developer I just cant support a device/company that puts such draconian restrictions on developers.
Bring on the openness!

not to brag... but i'm charging mine up right now. Man... This will be a long 2+ hours for a full charge before I start using this badboy unplugged. Whoever thought this thing is big is smoking crack. It's just a LITTLE bigger than the IPhone. It is thicker tho, but it's not considered "thick" by any measure. Definitely doesn't look as sexy as the iPhone either, but if your a sidekick user... this thing is like a sidekick on steriods. Great keyboard(i'd give it a 90% compared to a sk keyboard) and smaller than any sidekick by far. The trackball is excellent too, better than the SK trackball even!
Got mine at 11 am today. So far I give the design a 3.5/5(nothing glossy or fancy to see here), usability 3/5 and network 2/5. The 3g sucks here, but I'm in the outer boroughs of nyc, so I can't vouch for how well the service is for the manhattan folks. The app store is almost empty, as I would expect for day 1. The Youtube app is very good. Videos load fast and are very clear. The wifi could be so much faster considering my cable connection is rated 30/5 by speedtest.net. I would post more but I'm too tempted to keep playing around with my g1.
It says mine is out for delivery today, so i will be posting my video as soon as i get it. I hate that my UPS shipments are always around the last to be delivered, just about the time my paws are all greased up with McDonalds MSG.
so excited were they that they had to remove their just soiled sheets to take the picture. I am surprised they cleared the post coital cigarette smoke in time for the picture
Beauty is in the eye of the T-Mobile G1 beholder. Oh, and please to all you hater out there, please come up with some solid or at least half solid knocks against the G1; not the same old "what an ugly phone."
The icons and interface look like they were swiped from Windows 95. The only people buying the G1 over other smartphones are you nerds. Hopefully when the sales fall well below expectations the people who thought this ugly mess was a good idea will get fired, and Google and HTC can get some good UI and hardware designers on the Android team.
mine is 'out for delivery'. hopefully on my doorstep when i get home.
I got mine...I am in VT!!...have to set it up and try in the evening!!
mine came in today (20th) :) its great!
Well I just went to UPS to see if I could pick it up... apparently it got here late this morning and it wont get unloaded until tomorrow :(
ah well, tomorrow is still a day early. Grats to you guys who got yours already!!
Mine was supposed to be delivered today but since I wasnt home i got the slip saying they will retry tomorrow.
mine is suppose to be delivered today but has not arrived.. it's almost 5pm here and UPS rep states that the truck should delivery it by 9pm!!!!!!!!!!! lORD
Does UPS require a signature? Do I need to rush home now?
Mine's been out for delivery since 4am, at work checking every 20 minutes, still no sign. Should be there when i get home though!
Hopefully there's someone at your house to get your phone! It would suck if they took it back to UPS and you had to wait for re-delivery. =(
Yah it seems lots of people received theirs today.... Very jealous, I'll see mind tomorrow. *Currently in PA on transit to CA.
I'm not sure how people have experience with HTC products. They are not that reliable. Give it 3-4 months before something happens and you have to return it. Just make sure you get the insurance.
Outside of Windows Mobile, which sucks the saggiest pair of nuts I've ever seen sucked, my Dash is an awesome phone. Built solid, been dropped several times (on concrete), still works great. I'm not a huge fan of the touch strip, but other than that, HTC has made some great phones. My buddy agrees, he's on a Wing.
I got mine this morning.
1) Battery life sucks
2) Every time you turn the phone on it takes awhile for the SD card to be reconized
3) Remove/add the SD only when the phone is off
4) The icons can be moved just like the ipod, same way, just press down on the icon and drag it
5) Not all the websites work with this browser, yahoo mail doesnt work, you have to use the mobile edition
6) Only a handfull of apps, very few
7) Have yet to figure out how to get the compass mode to work, unless you actually have to be outside in the middle of the street
8) Contact synchronization from your Gmail account works the first time, but when you update it from the web it doesnt sync on the phone for some reason.
9) It goes back and forth from 3g to evdo depending on signal strenght, I guess, but I do see it switching.
10) The settings are very limited therefore customization sucks, can not figure out how to change the stupid big clock on the phone to a digital format.
11) Noticed that the IM doesnt remember your password if you turn the phone on/off
12) Camera sucks big time
13) I have yet a way to figure out how to remove icons, only lets you add
Phone just died, Battery from start lasted 4 hours with mild/medium usage.
uuhh.. I'm sorry, if you just got your G1 this morning how can you even tell about the battery life in such a short time? CHARGE IT!!! You don't make much sense at all in fact... evdo is on CDMA T-Mobile is on GSM.
Not many apps eh?.. right.. well IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED..so chill!
As far as the rest of your comment "Bill Gates" well... I can't seem to believe anything you say. Fake name, fake post, you're just too fake to take seriously.
-Kem
I think your little 'review' is premature. You need to either read the book some, or chill out and get used to the phone.
I'm not going to do a mini-review, but I'm going to comment on some of your points.
1. I have no idea right now, I haven't conditioned my battery yet since I got my phone this afternoon - I let it charge for 2 hrs and as of this moment it's sitting at 90%, and I have been playing with it.
2. I'm not sure what 'takes a while' means, but I was able to play music and look at pictures as soon as the desktop loaded.
3. Incorrect, you can hotswap the mini SD as long as you unmount it - this is obviously to prevent damage to the data on the card. You can unmount the card under settings/sd-usb.
4. Agreed.
5. The NEW Yahoo Mail doesn't work (Ajax I think?), but you can use Yahoo Mail Classic perfectly fine, nothing extra to do but hit "proceed to yahoo mail classic".
6. There aren't many apps at the moment, but we're on day -1 (a full day before public release), I think we can at least wait a week before we expect to be inundated with Apps.
7. Compass/Mapping works by default from wifi and the tmobile cell network. You can enable the GPS if it's not working for you as is - but enabling GPS mode uses more battery power, and you DO need to be outside for it to work in GPS mode.
8. Go into your settings and go to Data Sync - the phone Automatically syncs with gmail/etc, I don't know if it's timed or 'triggered' somehow but I do know that if you want it to sync up when YOU want it to, turn off auto sync and just sync it manually, or disable autosync and re-enable it and it will sync that second.
9. I assume it would go from 3G to Edge, but I haven't NOT seen my 3G icon since I've been playing with the phone, so I probably am deeper into a fully mapped 3G area.
10. There is a tiny learning curse, I assure you. If you find things problematic I advise you to read the booklet. The clock is a widget which you can remove (tell you how soon), and you can download more widgets for the desktop - including a digiclock if you so wish.
11. All my IMs remembered my info through a power cycle, repeatedly. Of course, I checked the 'Remember my password' box. You should try it.
12. It's much, much better than my Dash camera. It sucks compared to dedicated camera, but this is the best cell phone camera I've dealt with...too bad about no flash or even light, to take pictures in the dark, that would have been neat...but no complaints here.
13. Hold the icon and the menu pull-up will turn into a garbage, drag it there and the icon is gone - either back into the programs folder or off of the desktop. To re-add, hold and drag it from the programs menu, or add it by touching and holding any part of 'clear' desktop space.
To add on this, I'm experiencing few 'downers'.
1. The brower is a TAD laggy, just compared to the iPhone. It's faster or as fast as most other browers I've played with.
2. You'll need to get used to the 'chin' - some people will hate it, or tolerate it - but noone will love it (in regard to using the keyboard). I tolerate it, I havent had any issues with it - it's just angling your thumb a bit differently, there's no strain, etc. associated with it - will just be a mental adjustment.
3. I miss synching with Windows Media Player, but I think I've figured something out by using the phone with the 'use as usb storage' feature. So it's not a huge problem and probably doesnt deserve to be a real downer.
4. A virtual keyboard would be great, just so you don't HAVE to pop out the keyboard for little things - like a short SMS, etc. I'm sure something 3rd party will come along very soon.
The likes are too many to really list. I can do a few of the most satisfying bits about the phone.
1. Having a dedicated keyboard is just...I can't describe how happy I am about that. My Dash had the numbers mixed in with the letters so I had to 'alt' alot, and I don't like the virtual keyboard for dedicated typing.
2. It's so easy to work with and so immensely customizable. I can't WAIT for the variety of gadgets/desktops and apps that are going to be released for free.
3. While browsing maybe a bit laggy, the phone and software on it at the moment are VERY snappy. You're not going to wait very long for apps to start or for screens to change/menus to come up, etc.
4. The trackball is pretty neat and useful for the times that you're using the keyboard.
5. Super solid feel to the phone and the rubberized outside takes 'yuck' away from the 'less than pretty' form of the phone. :)
There's more, but I don't want to gush more than I already have.
They have 10-packs of these phones on ebay for $7,000. I just need one for less then $200. Where are they at(No two year, no t-mobile)?
