CTL's 2go classmate PC now available

We know you've been waiting around here all week to hear this news, and so here it is. The 2go convertible tablet Classmate PC we've been hearing about for nearly a year, and which we fully expected to make its official debut at CES has done just that. The 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 screen-boasting tablet's got a 1.6GHz Atom 270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB HDD and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. You can grab the Windows XP version now for $549 -- no word yet on Linux.

i thought these things were supposed to be aimed at getting laptops in the hands of children in 3rd world countries? $550 sure isnt an economical way of doing that.
i think you're thinking of the OLPC...
Obviously, there is a big-shot, corporate type behind the OLPC campaign showing his true colors.
@hary:
spam spam spam!
gtfo.
No, the Classmate PC was launched to be a similar initiative as OLPC. I'll have to research it i suppose.
Why is this, a childish looking device, pretty much the only option for a netbook tablet type device?
We saw that Eee at CES, and there is that Gigabyte one that is nearly impossible to get in the US and looks ugly as hell, and theres this.
I might go for the Eee one, but still. I like having options. I think this really is a logical step for the netbook market.
I agree, this is too childish and too expensive.
Impossible to get in the US?
Ebay my good chum, ebay, theyre going for $500 i think.
It looks childish because it's ... designed for children! It was stated they'd make a version for adults. I hope they don't lose the whimsical elements, I've seen enough shiny black or aluminum. Though I wouldn't complain about the equivalent of a taller vaio p with capacitive touch.
I'm with you on netvertibles being the next great thing, and am holding out for one.. there have been several designs announced, if things don't go awry there should be some good choices in a few months.
6 CELL BATTERY? I'M IN OF SO.
If it would be not so ugly...
Picture on Gizmodo is old, link looks much better (though not as good as I wish)
fade this mark!
sorry just watched boys in the hood
bet it would run great with windows 7, does the beta have the touchscreen stuff?
Any school or anyone in any rich country can order at least 100 the OLPC XO-1 at $259 each at http://laptop.org/en/participate/change-the-world.shtml
For deliveries in the poor countries of the world the price is $219 per laptop unless you sponsor to existing OLPC target countries in which the price is then below $200 per laptop.
The Give 100 and Give 1000 programs of OLPC can be directed anywhere, and the price covers the cost of their delivery to a major airport.
XP really does look horrible compared to Sugar.
Tablet Netbook?
+ OSX86 = win!
*crosses fingers*
Any reviews on how this would work for a artist as a drawing platform?
Add to point out the campaign Portugal has around it's own version of classmate being Magalhães.
This version is being distributed freely or at the cost of 50 euros to students being assembled in Portugal bu JP Sá Couto.

it needs to run linux. kids would be busy installing games on these things if it runs on windows. i've seen quite a few school initiatives fell into pieces because the kids were busying themselves with games rather than learning. nothing against games, i'm a gamer myself, but there needs to be balance.
then again i also believe it has a lot to do with the ALTERNATIVES provided by teachers, who are seldom well trained to handle the new kind of learning environment that such gadgets entail.
