Video: iFrame tablet PC in action
Oliver Seres has developed a tablet PC prototype that he's calling the iFrame (groan) -- which is somewhat similar to that CrunchPad we've been following -- and runs on a custom install of Ubuntu. It's built from an Amtek T10L UMPC, and looks like it's pretty snappy, with a really slick interface. We don't know a ton about the specs of the custom device, but the Amtek boasts an Intel Atom N270 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, an 80GB hard drive, and a 10.2-inch 1,024 x 600 resolution display, plus a 1.3-megapixel camera, dual speakers, and WiFi. There's no word on cost of the prototype, nor if and when it'll head into production. Check the sweet video of Oliver demoing after the break.

MSN!
Software Zombies! Ahh!
Scratch that. Link to the webpage- not the browser.
At least i can un-board my doors now.
I thought it'd be aMSN or emesene, but one is ugly as sin and the other, well, you might as well just use pidgin.
I read that Microsoft wants to make software for PCs with touch screen tech.
Wow, that is incredible! I will postpone all my buying decisions now that I've heard that vaporware.
Vapor? Microsoft just purchased an Israeli company that specializes in Touch Screen technology.
I also heard MS bought a company called Danger so they should be doing more in the mobile market. But that's now vaporware as well.
screams windows 7...multitouch
If windows was multi-touching me, I'd be screaming too.
@ ethana2
Yeah, maybe if it were Vista, but Windows 7 is the real deal.
So that's a "Touch Slate" , not a touch tablet!??
Actually if would call this one rather a "Touch Slate" if he's already referring to it as being built out of a slate pc.. a tablet would have a stylus in my opinion. So let's have a system for these new device names before it's too late :/
I hope Asus, Acer, MSI, et al are looking at this.
This can be a huge market someday. It is certainly worth giving a shot, methinks.
Well, you can buy a CTL 2go Convertible Classmate PC today for around $500. It's basically the same thing, except that it comes with Windows XP, and a keyboard you can fold under the touchscreen to make it a tablet (and an accelerometer, of course). Other similar PCs have been announced but are not yet shipping (the Asus T91 and the Giga-byte M912).
Is it wrong to want something that's basically a revamp of the less than loved Viewsonic AirPanel?
8" Touch screen (no it doesn't need to be multi touch) 8gb ssd local storage, integrated wifi, linux on the device would be nice.
I'd be a happy camper if that came in at the same price as a similarly specced netbook/nettop/ultra-mini-laptop/whateverthehelltheyarecallednow
Ah-ha, so that's what Mr Blurrycam looks like...
Funny, I thought somehow he'd be fuzzier.
iFrame? What a bunch of creatively challenged jackasses.
Lame.
Ditto...
People/Companies/Whatever should stop putting an "i" at the beginning of a product just to be "trendy"...
IMHO, all of those who do that, apart from Apple*, suck big time...
* : Not that I'm an Apple fanboy, but you see the tendency on iMac, iPod, iPhone, etc.
YES YES YES..finally something simple for basic web surfing and video watching. portable with the wasted keyboard.
Id much rather have this then a netbook since i really only view wabpags and would also love to control my media in my house with this.
Hm, so how do we call these devices now??
[ ] Touch Tablet
[ ] Touch Slate
[ ] Touch Pad
[ ] Touch ___??
anyone?
Touch Me.
Wow, this i prefix on everything under the sun is getting rather iNtolerable.
wow this is just a big ass bootleg iPhone
They should have pulled another video that runs smoother. It looks as if the machine is struggling with a simple youtube video playback.
i think flash video always plays slow on linux, so there is no video on youtube he could find that would play smoothly
This is a totally awesome idea, having the multitouch display packing a battery, with the "stand" acting as a charging base.
Obviously they need to make it a LOT skinnier and sexier, and they should also bundle it with a wireless keyboard that has the same footprint as the display, so that you can easily transport them in tandem. Maybe make a clasping mechanism too, so that you can physically pair the keyboard to the display if you want to use it in your lap or whatever.
I see where this is going, and I like it
Edit: just realized that the stand actually isn't a charging dock, though it obviously should be.
The whole design is in need of some serious sexifying and refinement. Better call up Apple! :P
why can no one on these reviews EVER hold the camera steady!!!!!!
Nice, but a chunky little monkey it be (the tablet, that is).
why "iFrame", why?! ugh
i think maybe he should crack open that book about gestural interfaces, because he underuses gestures in his tablet. for example, why not swipe left and right between home screens, like you can on the iphone? it would also be cool to able to swipe backwards to go back a page, etc.
Thanks for the article, I agree most of the criticisms of the comments :
Yes the camera is not steady
Yes iSomething is ugly if not Apple's product (iFrame is just a codename, i'll find something better soon in the meantime you can suggest me a name , i'll offer you a beer and a free TouchPad
This is not MacWorld with or without Steve, i just wanted to do a live demo of a concept developped in a month timeframe, most on the time dealing with drivers. I want to promote easy access to the web, for non geeks. Just imagine what your parents can do with it. This is not a phone, neither a PC; just something in between. I'd also like to promote the idea of softwares and web pages fitting with 10' inches touchscreens .Your comments are valuable to this project.
nice concept Olivier :) Keep up the great work. I'd love a beer !! However, all my name suggestions already have existing TMs. TouchTab, WebTouch, Touch Link. Bleh...no beer for me looks like :(
